All food is better stone cold

I don't care what y'all think. Nothing about my food being hot or even warm makes it any better for me. I always burn tongue and even if I don't, I really don't enjoy rushing to swallow because my mouth is at risk of inflicting pain. Even when it's slightly warm, I don't like it. I want my food stone cold, no matter what the food is.

I always let my food cool down, not even to room temperature, I let it cool even longer and I eat everything stone cold. It lets me properly savor the flavor, without worrying about too much heat. Eating cold food for me is a relaxing experience, eating hot food is a panic-inducing one, and eating slightly warm food is boring, not any better than stone cold food. I'll even gladly eat food straight out of the fridge and enjoy it! I've been called "crazy" and "perverse" for this many, many times.

I like my food stone cold and refuse to eat it even mildly warm, always letting it cool down way below room temperature. Screw what anyone thinks 😆

Yeah that's definitely unpopular. I could not imagine eating everything cold, like what the fuck?

Sue me
I do indeed eat everything cold. I get soo much shit from my bf for that 😂

I used to get ripped on for eating Chunky soup from a can on construction sites.

The caveat it, during winter you need warm food to get your body temp back up, but spring to fall, fair game.

No I don't. My preference for stone cold food never changes. Not even during winter, idgaf

I’m not gonna have hypothermia on the job, sorry. Same sorta reasoning as not wanting to burn your toungue. It’s for your (my) safety.

7

You clearly don't work in the absolute freezing cold like this person does...

5
lemmy.world

If you are that concerned about burning your mouth or your tongue on even slightly warm food, I can recommend a really good therapist to help you out on that.

41

I'm currently switching therapists, so not talking to one at the moment. However, I'm almost positive I have some form of OCD, not just because of this.

17

That is a hot take, irony intended.

There’s probably some good scientific reason for eating meat hot. And coffee? I can kinda deal but the tea? Throw it straight out if it’s not piping hot and I don’t care how the Americans take it.

32
Miishareply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Yeah, umm...coffe and tea both. Stone cold, just like my food 😆
Not even joking...

This raises further questions for me, since I'm a wanna-be coffee afficianado. You get much lower extraction at lower temperatures, with both coffee and tea. Do you grind coffee finer to compensate, or do you just enjoy weaker beverages? Also, do you mean room temperature, tap-water cold, or actually chilled? How do you make coffee (and tea)? Thank you in advance!

3
Miishareply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

I have a coffee machine, so I make a pot of coffee, pour myself some, straight into the fridge with that mug. When it's cold, I add milk and drink it almost like a shot, all at once. I'm just weird like that...
With tea, I of course prepare it with hot water. Then remove the teabag, straight into the fridge. When it's cold, I enjoy my tea :3

1

Making coffee/tea like normal, then chilling it makes a lot more sense, with your specific preference. Iced coffee is also arguably the least unpopular part of your proclivities. Still not for me, but you go on with your cool self!

2
lemmy.world

What about iced coffee? People love that stuff, and she’s prolly no different.

4

My wife likes iced coffee, too. I've tried it, I don't hate it... but it isn't for me. Not knocking those who do like it. I just prefer hot.

There's also cold brew, but I'm not sure if cold brew is meant to be drank cold, or if it's just brewed cold and it gets heated up. I imagine the former. That's probably fine too.

2

Most foods taste more when at least warm. Notice I said more, not better.

That's because once things get cooler, scent molecules don't hit your nose as well, and fat soluble flavors aren't as available to the tongue. Whether or not that's "better" is subjective, but you can test it out fairly easily

3
Denvilreply
piefed.world

In my American opinion, cold tea is only good if you dump enough sugar in it to give you a heart attack. Unsweetened is just plain inferior to hot tea.

3

I love unsweet iced green tea, more than hot green tea. Yum.

1

I'm the opposite on coffee and tea. Definitely prefer both really warm, but not hot, I don't like either cold, but I like cold coffee less than I like cold tea. I will finish them as a punishment for letting them get cold though.

Cold green tea and oolong tea are super common in Asia.

Yep. Bubble tea is the superior form of all tea. Taiwan fucking perfected tea. Everyone else is living in denial.

In case you ever want to try eating warm food again, try putting a stone next to the food in the oven. That way the food will be stone cold and warm at the same time.

25

At that point, I'd just rather eat the hot stone. And I like neither hot food nor stones...

This is not an insult. Have you taken any tests to see if you may be autistic? If not, you should.

25

I enjoy my food cold as well, and I am diagnosed as autistic. So you might be onto something.

I don't enjoy my food cold and I'm not autistic. So yeah, I think they might be on to something.

As he should. You're heating everything else in the fridge, making the fridge work far harder than usual and thus vastly accelerating both the fridge and it's contents' demise.

putting hot lasagna in the fridge for hours at a time...

Deranged. You could literally cause food to spoil early doing this.

-4

"my brother in Christ" is a meme phrase. Also it's not saying you're literally Jesus's brother.

I'm just saying you're criticizing someone for doing the point of the community, that's kinda dumb.

0

How does this even work if you eat somewhere that doesn’t have a fridge for you to cool your food below room temperature? What’s wrong with you that you “always” burn your tongue even at nonburning temps?

11

Sensory differences are a thing. Although I doubt OP literally "burns" their tongue on luke-warm foods, it's possible OP has a sensory difference that makes warm food more difficult to tolerate, or possibly even painful.

For me, my brain interprets certain light touches as "painful." I can tolerate having my hairs pulled out one-by-one and feel fine, but touch me in the wrong spot with a feather and I'll scream. I can easily imagine other people may have crossed wires in their nervous system somewhere that make certain temperature sensations on a sensitive tongue feel painful.

2

Objectively and demonstrably wrong. Excellent post.

10

I feel exactly opposite to this. If I never ate any cold food again it would be too soon.

10
sh.itjust.works

I think you're tasting a different flavor profile than the rest of us because for instance sugar is less tasteable cold. But that's okay, you enjoy your food whatever way you like it! Also, your way is much easier to deal with than someone who wants their food piping hot. Any delay can overcook or burn their food. Not you! Make ahead, put in fridge, come back anytime between 20 minutes and 24 hours later, it will be nice and cold, safe and unchanged.

6
Miishareply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

That's pretty much me, yeah!
My dad has to have piping hot food and I hate him for it. He always forces me to eat hot pizza straight from the oven and I always burn my tongue. He's awful...

To be fair, he's a lifelong soldier (78 now). I guess being in the military does make you appreciate hot food...but keep your preferences to yourself, old man 😭

0
sh.itjust.works

Unless he's shoving it in your mouth he can't force you. If he does, that's physical abuse. If it's verbal bullying, say something like "I don't want to ruin everyone's meal with this arguing. I'll see you all later" and leave the room. If it's a restaurant just don't say anything, sit quietly with your slice cooling on your plate and let him embarrass himself by ranting at you in public.

You can just have salad for dinner

If the pizza is homemade, try "I can appreciate your cooking better if I haven't burned my taste buds and I'm eating it at the temperature I prefer." If it's delivery, meet the guy outside and set your slice aside to cool.

3

Well...about that...
He pulls the pizza (frozen, store-bought) out of the oven, sets it on a wooden cutting board, and says "EAT" very loudly, in my general direction. I don't, because it's fucking hot, I can tell with just my fingers. When I tell him it's too hot, he literally yells "EAT IT WHILE IT'S HOT" at me and seems...tbh, irrationally pissed off. When I protest further, he calls me "Perverse". When he's eating it himself...istg his mouth is already pre-burnt, because he's clearly burning his mouth (watery eyes, strange slurping noises, ew), but he just keeps eating it? As soon as he sits down? Strange...
I can handle being yelled at (less so with HRT now), but when he does this to my brother, it really pisses me off. There is literally zero to be such a massive douchebag TOWARDS YOUR OWN CHILDREN nonetheless. It's just...idk. He's 78, I'm 20 and my brother is 16. Sure, there's a huge generational difference, but I swear sometimes it feels like he's from a different planet.
And he's generally very progressive and liberal, but sometimes his brain's "empathy center" shuts down and he goes full (pardon me) "logical man-mode", where feelings don't exist and the only thing that does is solving a problem, logically without considering anyone's emotions. And he gets really monotone, he yells, he mocks people...he's not fun to be around :/
But he also supports me financially, going to great lengths to ensure we have what we need. Without him, I wouldn't be able to get bottom surgery in Thailand...

I'm really totally rambling, I'm sorry. Just need to get it out sometimes.

2
lemmy.world

How do you "let something cool down" further than room temperature? You can't really let something just sit still and cool more than the ambient temperature, so you must use some form of cooling element, like ice cubes or something.

Or this is bait, I honestly can't tell.

6

2

lemmy.blahaj.zone

You put it in the fridge after cooking I guess?

Yes...sometimes
I'll be honest...yes, sometimes I do eat "raw" ingredients. Not ones that are actually dangerous to eat, but just yesterday, I found a pack of pre-cooked, vacuum-sealed ramen noodles in dad's fridge. I should've boiled them to heat them up...but they were pre-cooked, okay? So, umm...I just unpacked them, took out the solid slab of cold noodles and started biting into that...
Not bad at all, I must say! Good snacc, would eat again :3

By now, you should have realized, I am NOT normal

You like your saturated fat stick to your teeth hard. That's fine. Serious question though, how do you stand eating anything high in saturated fat? Or with proteins in liquid that congeal? Or shit waiting for your food's hot emulsions to separate?

5
Miishareply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

I just...do? Put it in my mouth or scrape it up with a spoon. Don't care, cold is always my preference. Won't eat hot food, not even warm...as I've said

0

I get you, in just wondering specifically if you don't like those foods. Namely fatty beef, bacon, butter emulsions, hearty velvety soups, cheese sauces

1
lemmy.world

Character development for Miisha? Neat!

Everyone’s got quirks, yours are harmless.

5

This probably isn't the development people were hoping for, now they're gonna hate me 😭 /s

3

I don't eat everything cold, but I like some foods cold and a day old, like pizza, it almost always tastes better than fresh, in my opinion.

5

I can get on board with that one. I love the texture of leftover pizza straight from the fridge.

2

Damn! That may be the most unpopular opinion I've seen on this community!

However, you aren't entirely alone. I've known a few people that are right with you. Not many, but enough that I've tried some things cold but fresh, as in putting it in a fridge until it's fully cooled.

Gotta say, I do not share the opinion for the vast majority of foods, and I found that some things are even worse cold than warm (things I didn't like already).

That being said, some soups are nice cold, and some varieties of pizza are as good, though the crust becomes untenable.

THAT being said, you rock on with yo sef. Ain't enough room in the world to be a food snob. You like what you like, and screw what anyone else thinks (just don't do it to them lol)

5

A friend of mine would never drink anything hot or warm. He only ever drank cold drinks.

3

I don't like food hot enough to burn my mouth, but I definitely far prefer food that's intended to be warm to be warm. I don't hate cold food though and in times of pure laziness, I will eat straight from the fridge instead of heating it up and be fine. Something like a cheeseburger, there's zero chance I'm eating one not at least warm, or like a fettuccine Alfredo where the sauce congeals after it's chilled, hard pass.

5

You think cereal is better cold?!

There really are a lot of strange people on the internet. 😏 /s

4

Definitely unpopular. In a strange way I kind of agree about not wanting to burn your mouth, that's horrible and not worth it. I'll sometimes sit and wait for several minutes for my plate to cool if it's steaming hot, even when I'm hungry and other people around me are eating. But there's always a point where it's obviously safe and still nicely warm which is much better than being cold.

4
jlai.lu

Do you think you have some trauma from childhood of parents serving you food too hot and actually burning your mouth?

4
lemmy.world

I just had a lovely meal of tortellini and the thought of it Stone Cold sounds gross.

By the way I could not get the speech to text to write Stone Cold without capitalizing it. Which I kind of like.

4

Lol, stone cold tortellini are a classic for me. No matter if they're from a plastic bag (boiled in water) or in a can (pre-cooked with sauce), I always have them stone cold. Don't even care, it's just better

-1

I hope you have a happy life, I reflexively dislike you

1
ani.social

"Stone cold" usually describes a facial expression, not a temperature.

always letting it cool down way below room temperature

You can't let something cool below room temperature as it would just reach equilibrium at room temperature. You have to actively cool it (like put it in a fridge) to cool it below room temperature.

3
Jadereply
programming.dev

Stone cold describes temperature just as often. Right??

4

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, its first entry is literal, with figurative use second.

stone-cold

"1 : completely cold"

So yes, it is absolutely used to describe temperature.

3
riverdocreply
lemmy.world

That's incorrect. Evaporative cooling may reduce the temperature beyond room temp, depending on how much moisture is available on the food.

1

Sure, but only a few degrees and only temporarily.

1
lemmy.zip

I love cold Pizza and cold fried chicken. That's where I draw the line unless it's food that is meant to be served cold/room temp.

3

I consider both of those to be completely different foods from their hot versions. It's always hard for me to decide if I want the leftovers heated up or not.

2

Stupid question... What do you do with pizza? Isnt melted stringy cheese enjoyable? Why am I asking, I know the answer already. Take my upvote and go

2

Isnt melted stringy cheese enjoyable?

For most people, probably. Not for me.

Pizza? Always cold

-1

Cold or room temperature. I make an exception for drinks. I'm not a person that needs their drink to be cold. Coffee and tea tho? Always cold

1

Erm, so do you have issues with extremes? Because burning your tongue should not happen often and that remains true even if you were eating food hot every time. What you describe as inevitable is something that happens to me like three times a year, only is bothersome for a couple days, and is thoroughly my own fault when it does happen.

Edit: you've caused me think at length about the difference in cold vs hot foods and it's got me alternating between gag reflex and mouth watering. Weird.

2

Well, I guess you're a lot into salads and meals that were lovingly prepared then put in the fridge for later (and ice cream). Some food must be cooked before consumption, so be sure to cook what must be cooked not to fall ill, even if they require to cool down before you find them to your taste.

2
lemmy.ca

But you can't have pea soup stone cold, and pea soup is the highest plane of soup

2

Weird, definitely, but im not much better. I prefer everything to be room temp. 1-2 mins in the microwave, or sitting on the counter for 10+ minutes after cooking.

I think you maybe have an aversion to bitter tastes or something. I, also unfortunately, love bitter foods

2
nord.pub

Cold pizza makes me want to vomit. I think most things taste better heated, but I think most people go too hot (my mouth burns easily and nothing has managed to fix that (techniques people recommend, just burning the shit out of my mouth repeatedly (yay, pealing skin constantly!), etc.)).

2
Miishareply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Nooooo, what? Cold pizza is the best! Pizza is one of the things I literally have to have cold. I hate hot pizza, straight from the oven...not sarcasm

0

That kind of rice is still chewy when cold. I was thinking long grain rice, which has a horrible cold texture.

1

I'm thinking of my favourite foods from past to present and all except boiled eggs are better cold.

Roast meat is best from the fridge

Roast potato is best from the fridge

Custard is best after a couple of days in the fridge

Steak is great the day after cooking

1

I do disagree and you have my upvote. Just had a nice bowl of chili, pretty hot in both senses of the word, toast and hot coffee for breakfast.

A cool refreshing salad, sure. Sandwich is good cold (except grilled cheese). Cold french fries suck, cold scrambled eggs are horrible.

Thank you for your unsettling opinion.

Correction: some food are better eaten cold. My personal favorite is cold pasta with optional sauce
