A gut punch in Ohio: Nearly 1,400 laid off at truck factory just days before Trump rally

Bos has two daughters, with a third due in January. At the grocery store, five items cost as much as a full cart once did. And on Wednesday, Bos and nearly 1,400 other people were laid off from their jobs at what had been the Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio.

Asked how many times he had voted for Trump, Bos held up three tattooed fingers. But he said he’s done with the president.

Sipping tea from beer mugs with his co-workers…

What the fuck??? Who does that? The lead photo in the article clearly shows them drinking beer. Such a weird sentence.

is there an "leopards ate my face" community in lemmyverse? This is premium leopard food.

18

reddit has a varaint for FARMS too. im guessing it was large enough issue that it can be seperated into its own community.

If that happens 3 OR 4 HUNDRED MORE TIMES they MIGHT start to MAYBE Reconsider voting for Republicans!

33

they just vote for R harder, if the derailment in 2023, dint affect them, this wont either. especially with the gov running interference in omitting any bad news in the state.

That's where we should be different. We should want them to see the error of their ways, but we shouldn't want anybody to struggle to get food on the plate.

6

They had plenty of time for that BEFORE causing all of the damage that they did. No forgetting, no forgiveness.

16

We should want them to see the error of their ways

a significant number of them are incapable.

7

I did. I still do want everyone to eat, and that’s why I vote blue. But if they want red and the misfortunes they bring, that’s on them. 🤷🏽‍♀️

7

Bos can explain to his family how he's so fucking stupid he made sure this is what would happen to them.

"This year’s election is a test for the working-class coalition that lifted Trump into the White House and gave majorities to Republicans in the House and Senate" - the under-educated coalition? This is the only reason working class would vote Republican. Oh, hold on, bigotry too.

Misinformation too.

Remember, none of us, even those of us on Lemmy, have ingested the same news and headlines.

Sure, there are shared overlaps in forums like these or among those who, maybe, only listen to Tucker Carlson and branch out from there for their worldly info.

Never assume other people know what you know. Let go of the belief that all the egregious shit you’ve read on Trump has been read by everyone, because it hasn’t.

There is no central news. No shared headlines.

Just TikTok, social media & its algorithms, and whatever podcasts/YouTube/NewsChannel we sporadically choose to consume on a level that most often resembles TikTok consumption.

Jordan Klepper has skits from the 2016 run through the attack on the capital where he would mingle with MAGAs when they gathered, because he looked like them. (Not much on the violent coup attempt, his fear in that crowd was evident, he grabbed footage at the edge then noped out).

He did get past the evade replies regarding bad things Trump was doing, occasionally, to the true reply which was exactly as you said: I don’t care.

We laugh at the evade replies because they’re so ridiculous, but the “I don’t care” is the real answer.

7
Whostosayreply
sh.itjust.works

Exactly. We are so far beyond "do they know." Imo these people should be culpable too to some degree. And I do have loved ones in the cult, which I'm sure we all do because it's so massive.

We're never going to get through this kind of shit if we keep giving fascists the benefit of the doubt. They will not give it to you and they applaud violence on innocent people, hate, inequality, etc.

There is no doubt on their side, why are we not listening to who these people are saying they are? They literally gloat about it. That's what those hats became, very quickly. It's a brag that they can be openly hateful now. Fuck that.

6

A lot of discussion/argument begins and ends with news source incompatibility so we don’t get down to “I don’t care” often.

2
lemmy.world

I don’t care

In many cases, "I don't care" really means "I don't believe what you're telling me but I don't have the ability to refute it."

4

Never assume other people know what you know.

agreed but that's by choice. I read kiwi farms etc for that exact reason and occasionally they make a good point, but most of it is obviously bat shit insanity, or just plain bigotry

Let go of the belief that all the egregious shit you’ve read on Trump has been read by everyone, because it hasn’t.

of course, how can we know everything ?, so we're all selective but there's even many in here that refuse to engage in politics because icky. Many folks say they filter any mention of him out of their feed, so they'll be as uninformed as Bo and Luke Duke in this interview and yet I bet they won't be uninformed and also vote for Trump.

There adults, if they drink, get drunk and then drive we blame them... but for some reason they make shitty political choices, not once (I could kind of understand that stupidity, it's what got Regan elected) here but thrice and yet they still have people defending them.

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." - Lyndon B. Johnson

I always think LBJ is the best anti-hero we've seen. He's crass and rambunctious but willing to sacrifice his own career to uplift a cause for the greater good. While most politicians are afraid to alienate a huge portion of voters, he's willing to alienate the Southern voters to legislate the Civil Rights Act because who cares about racists.

21

willing to sacrifice his own career to uplift a cause for the greater good

I recommend reading Caro's biography series on LBJ. I think you would find this statement to be not accurate. He was willing to alienate (white) Southern voters because his one overarching goal in life was to be (and to stay) President and (white) Southern voters were never numerous enough to ensure that. To his credit, LBJ seemed to be very much not racist personally, but fixing racism was never a goal of his.

I see a lot of hatred towards these people, it makes sense given what community we are in.

Personally, I don’t want them to suffer, but I do find humor in it, just as my coping mechanism.

I would be salty and get them to admit they were wrong, taking satisfaction in a big I told you so is much better than wanting more suffering even if they deserve it.

The point is they weren't tricked. The constantly claimed they were tricked but they weren't, trump told them who he was and what he would do if elected, and they voted for him anyway, and then he did exactly what he said he was going to do, and now they're upset.

The whole project 2025 was a matter of public record. Granted these people can't read but still, I'm sure they could have found an audiobook version or something.

20

"he's not hurting the right people", meaning brown and any non-white "immigrants". Fuck all magats. They literally fucked this country over, I'll never forgive them. Have ended friendships over it. It's not a political stance, it's a moral stance.

You voted for a man you wouldn't leave your daughter or wife alone with for some stupid fucking reason.

You voted to end your wife or daughters rights.

I could go on, but I'm tired. Trump sucks, his followers suck more since I have to see them. Eat shit and die, all magats.

23

Oh they do, and that’s why I wouldn’t see them suffering as injustice, but I don’t wish it to happen.

The way I see it, if I’m wishing stuff, I rather them have an existential crisis about it and come to the conclusion that they’ve been wrong all their life and beg for forgiveness.

Trump could do what the Democrats never could, put a Democrat from Texas in the US Senate.

33
Lumisalreply
lemmy.world

You used the whole thing in past tense, as if the event already happened, not future tense.

What you wanted to say was "Trump did what the Democrats never could; make it very likely for a Texas Democrat to be elected to the Senate."

By saying "put" you implied the event already came to pass.

English is a dumb language though so understandable for your mistake to be made.

Edit: correction; I missed the first "could" and only saw the second "could". My mistake - the sentence is grammatically correct. Though this is a fine example of why English is a dumb language. Still not as bad as Finnish I'd say (sorry Finns the country and everything is great to me but we gotta fix the language, too many exceptions like English except unlike English you just get misunderstood since so few letters of the alphabet are typically used to make words. Old Finnish had more order than Modern Finnish).

The "could" earlier in the sentence applies to the phrase beginning with "put". The grammar is fine, though the sentence is a little long.

I used to fish with my dad in a creak/river than ran behind a different Navistar location. Freaky perch were not rare. No idea what they were dumping in that water (or I guess someone upstream; I can't prove it was them, but I don't recall it from other parts upstream).

And he'll vote for the next GOP candidate telling himself he's not voting for Trump again because his voters are too dumb to connect the dots.

16

None of the 70.98% of the Springfield electorate deserve to have shit. They better pull themselves up by their bootstraps and pray trump doesn't get rid of all the remaining social programs he said he would get rid of. Racist liars, going along with the lie that Hatians were eating dogs and cats.

All the other red counties should take note because this will be you soon. I certainly won't help you but I'm sure the centrists and independent people who want to hold hands and sing will be glad to show you unconditional kindness and help you out.

Not me though. You need to repent because Jesus is the only one gonna put up with your lowlife soul.

I see a lot of people like this being treated with total contempt, which is your right, but a few things to keep in mind.

  1. Please remember 70% of voters are not Democrat. Democrats are 30% of voters, Republicans 30% of voters, and Independents are 40% of voters. Insulting and celebrating the hardships and deaths of those who don't agree with you is a very bad look, and won't convince anyone that your minority party (Democrats) is the cure.

  2. Very few people are actually informed. Their entire waking life can be their job and children. Spare time is spent in non-political activities, like watching a goofy show. Many people are juggling multiple jobs and don't have a lot of spare time to research politics or history. Maybe zero time. So they go with their gut. (this is often wrong, but remains true). Make it easy for their gut.

  3. Keep in mind that you require independent voters to win every federal election. Would you like to win an election? Then you better get some Independent votes. Insulting and humiliating others does absolutely nothing for you. You could be totally right, your anger might be well founded, but it doesn't help you.

  4. Do you agree that there are a significant amount of stupid people? These stupid people don't like being called stupid, and take this all very seriously. You want the votes of stupid people. Would you like stupid people to vote for your party? Spending your days mocking and insulting anonymously can be a lot of fun, but it's no way to WIN.

This is a big election upcoming, go out and vote! ... and if you're up for it, maybe try to be kind to a voter or three. It can only help your cause. Contempt hurts you.

8
lemmy.world

I do not care about centrists, whether they want to say they are independents or whatever they want to go with. If the lack of fucks I have for them sends them to the right, they were gonba vote that way all along.

A lot of people voted for Trump knowing what he would do, but they didn't think it would affect them. And if trump would "fix" things for them, they will go back to being happy pigs while watching others suffer. This was always about owning the libs, anyway.

They had a taste of Trump 1.0 and they still voted for Trump 2.0. That second or third time wasn't a mistake. They knew what he was and they said they were ok with a moronic rapist pedo bully with narcissistic tendencies to having the nuke codes. People like this are not good people and I'm not going to sugarcoat it for them. They will vote red no matter how much you lick their boots, so fuck that.

11
Mulligrubsreply
lemmy.world

It's okay for you to not care about them.

But, don't be surprised when they don't care about you.

First, you must learn that centrists and independents are two different things. Independent is an even bigger tent than the D party, it includes centrists within, but includes everybody else, too, like socialists. They're not centrists, don't be ridiculous.

Next, you must learn that If you don't serve the interests of that 40% of voters, you will lose. Their priority one interest is one that we all share, all 100% of us have this exact same interest. Money. We all need money in the USA. It's our common denominator.

You're outnumbered and doing the rookie thing, and gotta up those numbers. Hostility is not your friend. Be honest... if you want to sell something, you don't insult the buyer, do you? You don't have to sugarcoat or lick their boots or anything.

Do the math. If the 40% of independents were centrists or red voters, you'd never win any election, ever. But you do win elections, because they're not centrists or red voters. Come on now

-1

If 40% of voters have to be sold on why it's in their best interests not to vote for nazis, then no. I'm good.

We'll see what happens in the midterms.

1

Agree overall but I gotta push back on your stats here. There are about 1.5x as many registered Democrats as there are registered Republicans in this country, and fewer centrists/independents than either group. American politics being super polarized means there aren’t very many centrists anymore, like at all. Literally the only reason Republicans ever win anything is voter suppression, nothing about their program is particularly popular amongst Americans.

12

It’s okay to just want these people to suffer out of a sense of revenge, but don’t expect them to learn anything or act like anything will get better in the broader society. These people voted for Trump in the first place because their lives already kinda sucked. I think more suffering is just gonna make them bigger assholes

1
ChicoSuavereply

Showing kindness to those who don't share their kindness with others will have you overworking for people who don't care. They are, in a word, toxic. Toxic people don't deserve the effort and grace given to them - they are to be met with the animosity they revel in showing others.

17
Janxreply
piefed.social

Yes, they're toxic and hateful, yes they don't care, yes they don't deserve it, but I would argue empathy and kindness is what sets us apart from them. I still want to improve the lives of everyone, whether they appreciate it or not. But our benevolence shouldn't extend to allowing Republicans to remain in power...

5

Agree with you. I have plenty of empathy for them, I know they have none for me, but that quite literally is the difference. I won't let go of that for hatred.

7

The way to improve the lives of the hateful is to have them live the life they demand of others. It is speaking their language. If they don't want to be treated as such they can change too. If or when they change I will be there to comfort and console them, to help them heal from their hate, but I am under no delusion that they will change from others being too nice to them. COVID shook that naivety from me.

5

showing empathy to people who don't share your empathy is toxic. it's toxic empathy is what it is.

…some people make horseshoe theory look real attractive. but really it's just wilhoit's law in action. the only seemingly workable politics left is conservativism.
