Some local hero around here has been stabbing ball point pens into the speakers on them.

131
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Theyre smart to that already, most of the ad pumps I've run into have speakers hidden inside the housing that you can't access anymore, and the "bottom left button on the screen mutes the ad" trick is disabled.

At this stage I just boycott those stations, leave a 2 star review on Google and deal with paying an extra 15c a gallon a couple blocks away.

God i hope the gas machine ad venders are not actually billion dollar companies. I wonder whos responsible for the madness? What fucking jackass was like "How about screaming gas stations?" "Ya im talking about ear breaking ads!" and then packaged it up and sold it.

???? The gas station is the company. Of which all are multi billion mega corps that all have openly astroturfed and without denial decided to cause the species of human to end in return for taking the last remaining money from poors for their last death party alone with three hookers that no longer can even pretend to like them

8
lemmy.world

Ah so the oil companies approached the advertisers and were like boy have we got an idea? All gas stations are not multi billion dollar companies lol, the last two local ones i saw change hands went for under $1M and they have local owners, only one had ads, and it was part of the new owners upgrades... so like that was a member of my community who replaced gas tanks to sell ads. It's clearly worth some money, and was not forced upon them.

I don't understand what you think you are saying, just that it's wrong

1

Am i wrong about my local gas station not having ads? like use your words big guy. finish the thought you can do it!!!

You're saying the gas station down the street from me did get sold from private owner to private owner? That it wasnt worth what it sold for. The little old lady that owns the gas station down the street from me is a billionaire? whats wrong moron?

0

Whats wrong. I was asking how all the gas pumps got ads. I was asking why some did not have ads. I responded to a comment by repeating my understanding of what they were trying to explain to me.

And here comes you Captain Moron swooping in to say some negative shit of no consequence, so now i can't even insult you because you gave me nothing to go on other than being a vauge fucking asshole who probably reads at a third grade level?

Why not walk on some railroad tracks until you find a railroad spike lying around?

Then you could take that spike and stab the screen. 8 screens taken out, and the gas station can't pump gas anymore. You'd think they get the message before they get to the 8th. If not? Oh well. Their loss.

22

And if the train gets you first, then the pain will be no more..

A dirty nuke would simply kill the people. You want a home-made fuel-air bomb to really destroy those speakers.

I got a 2007 A6 Allroad Quattro for 1.8k. Let me know when I can get an EV for that price, with highway cruising range (I get about 1000 km on a tank but I'd find 400-500 acceptable on an EV).

So far the closest and most tempting are old Tesla Model S, which I could get for 15k, but I'm not a fan of touchscreens, I prefer a proper interior. And not sure I should give money to someone who bought a car off Elon Musk and will likely do it again. Runner up is Jaguar I Pace which is super cheap because... Jaguar decided to pretend its old lineup doesn't exist and is discontinuing parts production.

Even then, being able to charge at home is incredibly privileged. Not everyone lives in a single-family home. I do, but if I didn't, charging would cost as much as fuel before the Iran war.

0
lemmy.world

Right.... I drive a 20 year old Toyota Yaris that gets 40mpg, and i drive like 30 miles a week max, more like 15. It cost me $5,000 3 years ago and i pray every day it last another 3 years. Theres absolutely no cost savings for me dropping $20k on an EV to save 50-75 gallons of gas a year. I dropped $10-12,000 on solar to save $4,000 a year on power and heating. One of these is a good use of money one of them is virtue signaling...

0
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Yeah, the 200% charge and extra 10-20k to get it insurable is a no from me.

Yea i started planning one out this spring and opted for DIY. its still expensive as fuck and i hate myself for taking on the project. But i also cant afford to heat my house with kerosene anymore so something had to break. it was my back and my bank they broke. Not to mention Tariff King bumped the prices up on everything 50% or more. It's worth the peace of mind, but its honestly a 10k adventure.

It's pretty common in the North. Older houses built in the 40s thru 60s that have never been fully renovated. Furnaces are surprisingly resilient

6

The furnaces are awesome, I'm keeping mine for a back up unit. In the more brutal storms and dark winters the solar and the heat pumps start struggling. I imagine i'll still get some use out of the Old Beast.

2

A lot of fuels are in use for residential heating in america, and the fuel of choice is usually regional. Example

2

I live in a mobile home in rural maine. Most of rural maine heats with regular heating oil, but if you have to keep your oil tanks outside in the winter, the oil will freeze so you need to pay extra for Kerosene. It's a poor tax!

1

I bought the place from an 80 year old lady who had weird imitation kerosene lantern lighting from the 1980s, and I have Amish down the road. We do be trying to pretend its 1904 around here as much as possible.

My small rural town, which is clearly thee more smaller and ruraler than thou.... still has a 1970s style pump with the big flip up handles and you have to stop it yourself and the numbers are on a physical wheel that rolls. Better think twice before claiming rural there city boi!!

4

Rural town near me has 3 gas stations, and they all have them.

They're also all owned by the same guy and the prices are like 60-70 cents higher than any of the neighboring cities, but since it's 20 miles to a station he doesn't own he gets away with it.

3

We had a store like that, but it closed a couple of years ago. It was also the highest priced gas for the three closest stores.

We are paying three dollars more per gallon here in Germany because of the stupid war your country started in Iran, while you are largely unaffected yourself because of your own oil production

Largely unaffected? Our prices have soared since the war in Iran. Our prices were substantially lower before Iran because of our local oil production but it's very clear to most Americans that our fossil fuel consumption is largely supplemented but foreign oil. And we are seeing the result at the pump. Sorry you're paying even more but you were paying more than us before too.

4
lemmy.ca

The logistics of charging stations means not having to be standing next to the station for minutes at a time. Doesn't seem like a big difference but gas pumpers are a captive audience more than chargers

10

Wait for you to have to stop by the charger every hour to watch a new ad, and then see it fixed by a smartphone app that lets you view the ad on your phone to keep the charger on.

They... they have ads in the gas pumps? Do you have to watch the ads before you are allowed to pump?

I have legit punched the screens, and pressed all the buttons so hard in, I'm suprised nothing broke.

When it's obvious from the start you can just drive to a different station (for now), but when it sneaks up on me is when I get angry.

8

No because then you might realize what’s about to happen and go somewhere else. They wait until you start dispensing so you’re a captive audience, then they blast ads.

4

Sheetz plays ada for their food on the pump screens, which, fair enough. I'm okay with "We have sandwiches if you want one."

2

"Congratulations, you live in a society."

Still one of the best quotes from the Satisfactory AI.

2

I have yet to encounter a gas station pump that displays ads that hasn't been wholly vandalized to the point of non-functionality. I think I'd have to find a gas station being built the day they install the pumps to actually see them working. And then I would break them myself.

2

There are a couple of American Express cards that give you 3% cash back on Gas (including one with a low annual fee, that also gives 6% back on groceries up to the first $6000 spent per year).

That helps.

There's a gas station chain near me that doesn't play ads, usually has the best prices, and gives 10c off per gallon if you use their app linked to a checking account...that helps, too.

I miss the days when that was the better deal...

2

Well, I don't want to see vandalism. I don't want to see ads, either, but you've got to buy where the sales are these days. I'm sure not rich enough to be choosey.

2
lemmy.world

The pump at my regular gas station used to have a hidden mute button. Hold down the top right button next to the screen and voila no annoying ad noise.

After a a year of this they replaced the pumps and now I cant mute the ads anymore. Sad face.

2

My last tank was $170 and I got generic ads for "soda" nothing branded just "hey buy a cold drink inside" I'll accept that but if an actual external ad plays I put the pump back and goto the next station.

1
lemmy.world

Most gas pumps that do that have a way to mute them. It's usually the second button from the top of the four on the right hand side. Sometimes it's the top right button, but most of the time it's the second one. Enjoy the silence. Oh, and also if you press and hold 2 on your microwave, you can turn the button pressing and beeping off. Silent microwave is the way to go.

The damage gambling does to society in general and families specifically is horrific. It's one of those things that hotwires the reward systems of a persons brain as surely as alcohol or opioids. And it's so casual, gambling, especially at this level, finds the people who are susceptible, and exploits them until they are rung out like a dry cloth.

You may be one of the people who can just casually gamble, and not understand why it's so crazy destructive, or you could be 10 toes in a downward spiral, there's no way for me to know.

This period of legalized gambling is going to go have a body count at the end of it, a huge one.
