Me too. Horizon zero dawn was one of my favorite female ones.

Right? I like being girly sometimes and I like beating things to pulp as kratos other times.

Eh, depends on the game. I look at both and pick whichever one looks or sounds fun. Last few games I was a whole team of women in turn based games. Current game I'm a lone wolf male. Sometimes I find it funny making the cutest girl and whomping on enemies, othertimes I make an ugly old lady or man. Sometimes I make them look like me, or my wife, or one of my kids. Litterally depends all on my mood and whimsy at the time.

Fellow dad here that does the exact same thing. I wish I could add anything useful to this but you've already so eloquently explained it. Thank you for that.

24

My wife still teases me for how I play stardew valley. I was in a grumpy old man "get off my lawn" mood when I made my character. Played through it and hated how completing quests bumped up your reputation. So, I made extra effort to give people trash gifts so they liked me less.

My character fishes, farms, explores caves, and is drunk whenever he's in town, and liberally gives out trash to everyone that he crosses. Everyone hates him and that's exactly how he wants it.

He since retired to the island as he finds the lack of people peaceful.

17

For me it's like if I want the character to be an analogue for myself, I choose a male and try to make them look like me. If I want the character to be cool, I aim as close to warrior princess as I can get.

4

I generally make my character male if it's a first-person game, and female in a third-person game if the characters are interesting looking. If I'm going to stare at an outfit and ass for 100 hours, I may as well enjoy it.

You got me, as my defence women characters often have better clothing options, hairstyles options, VA, etc. Lets a man play dress up in peace 😂

Literally why my version of "the boss" from SR 2 Saints Row is canonically trans.

"Let me play dress up with this mexican looking fat avatar that looks like me"... ooooor "let me make a sexy looking busty lady and put her in all kinds of cool outfits"

🤔

yeah, I should have just ignored the character customisation aspect entirely and stayed looking like a schlub in game just to prove to myself that I'm a man.

Not sure, but I am sure that they started allowing it at some point.

4
alxreply

Ahah you get it. And yeah often when clothing work both ways (everything is unisex), the men clothing looks good on the women character, but not the other way.

2
slrpnk.net

The VA part was especially noticeable in CP2077, the male VA sounded like someone doing a stiff stereotypical mobster accent, while the woman VA was excellent, with far more emotion put into the lines, couldn't imagine playing it any other way.

3
alxreply

Yeah this is a clear edge case. both VA were good but the VA for fem V was insanely well done.

Last games I remember playing where the men had similarly interesting outfits were Monster Hunter World and Elden Ring and Final Fantasy

2

MH wilds finally lets us equip the male/female armors regardless of the character's gender ! It really upped the fashion game

I also would rather play more games written for a female protagonist. 3 decades of male player characters is plenty.

I have something similar watching movies/shows with women protagonists that are meant for women audiences. Tired of watching guy main characters ig, still totally cis tho!

Only when there models are hot oof I’ve never made a female dwarf character but those Korean boob sliders lol

I might just be a perv

26

Got one comment when I was younger from my girlfriend about how I never played a woman in games and now I almost always do

23

If I’m going to spend the next 300 hours staring at a character’s ass, I’m picking one I actually want to look at.

22

women are prettier damn it! and i want my character to be pretty!! >:(

Back in the runescape days, I used to get tons of free shit by being a girl. When they stopped gifting, I'd convince them to come to the wild and kill them for the rest of their shit

Also (back in the day) you needed to be for the "Recrutment Drive" quest.

One of the mini-bosses pulled the "No man can defeat me" card so you had to show up to the challange as a chick and slap the shit out of the knight. Sir. Tiffy Cashin would give you a coupon to the make-up witch (It just opened the character creator pane) so you could change things back if you wanted to.

5

Well, chances were you would need it, at least. You were given a random selection of trials every time you attempted the initiation, so you could randomly not get the "No man can defeat me" guy.

Also, the makeover mage (who themselves swapped between male and female every few seconds, because of you have magic powers, why not have fun with it?) only let you change your sex and skin color. To change your hair you needed to go to the hairdresser and to change your default clothes you needed to go to the clothes store.

4

Well of course? What else should I be playing as if not? A dinosaur? Don't be silly! Who would play as a dinosaur in a videogame?

nervous laugh

18

That's fair. I played Ark Survival Evolved, but I can't remember if breeding was a thing.

2
reddthat.com

I remember starting Genshin and given identical abilities, I preferred to look at a female character for the first few hours. I don't project myself into games, I always feel like I'm playing the characters as themselves.

17

Same. First person game I don’t care, but third person I want to look at a lady.

7

Always have, always will. Smaller Character models take up less space in 3rd person games and are harder to see in pvp.

Also cake.

16

In see a dude every day in the mirror. Let me have fun and see something different in videogames

15

Not the way I would have phrased it, but same. If the men are built like gorillas I play a woman. If the women are all wearing high heels and pretty much nothing otherwise I play as a man. If both options are fine it's a 50/50, tbh.

5

I use a girl as my YouTube Channel character, for instsnce

4
fedia.io

How else am I supposed to look at tna the whole playthrough?

9

I just go with whatever looks better. Or if there’s total customization, I imagine a backstory and go with whatever fits the backstory.

I’d guess my overall rates are something like 65% male, 35% female.

8
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Ever since questioning my identity I began playing girls more and enjoying character creation for once. Before, I always just hit random and entered said game.

8

This was me. I thought I needed to conform my character to my gender and thus my characters that looked like who I was "supposed to be." When I finally let myself try girls, it was such an upgrade (although my characters still tend to look like my idealized self bc I'm boring)

5

I’m from the “next next next I agree, let’s goooooo” school of character creation. I play an origin chat in BG3, ‘nuff said.

2

Depends on what character I'm wanting to develop at the time, but yeah, a lot of my oc's are women (although not necessarily female). I like to use the game as inspiration for lore. When I played cyberpunk 2077, I already had a character named V who's a cyborg rabbit girl, so it was close enough to perfect.

7

Yes I want to become queen of all Calradia and destroy those pesky Rhodoks once and for all!

7
lemmy.world

The Matrix character named Switch had it correct the whole time 🙌

7

One of my college friends always plays a female character with the same hair and complexion as his wife.

6

I only did it once. I'd heard that the male version of the character had terrible voice acting.

Same here but with my GPS app, the female voice had this.. petulant tone so I changed to the better male one.

5

You just reminded me of a memory that may have sparked my desire to transition.

I developed this one character for Dungeons and Dragons. Oh my God, I'm having a revelation as I type this!

Ok, so Calian is a Half Elf who's mother was a High Elf and father was a Half Orc. Years ago, her grandfather on her dad's side had to fight to be allowed to enter the stronghold of a female Orc. He won, and she chose him as her next of many husbands. They legit fell in love and had their son, Calian's father.

So Calian is 1/2 Elf, 1/4 Orc, and 1/4 Human. She has slightly more pronounced canines and Half Orc eyes - mostly just the golden color irises.

Her parents perished in a racist's terrorist attack who hated all half breeds. She was taken in by a group of nuns who maintained a church to the goddess Sune (remember, D&D). She grew up loved and to love unconditionally. Her more Orcish instinct to be a warlord clashed with her desire to love. And who deserved the most love and devotion?

Princesses.

Calian was so enthralled with the idea of saving a princess from danger that she would make up wild fantasies in her mind where she was the heroine who sought out and rescued princesses. This was her vow to her goddess before going her holy quest.

Calian took her job way too seriously and "searched" for princesses in very unlikely places. She frequented taverns to "save" the barmaids, or snuck into brothels to find her real princess she was destined to save. And she was a bit of a horndog but that never actually came up in the game.

And I realize now that she was who I wanted to be. I already had my princess, and after me married, my queen. Now I have two princesses to look after, and I adore them both.

This character has morphed over the years into another persona that I actually am interested in playing as in roleplay with my wife. Am I ever going to transition? Very unlikely. But I text her as this other persona, and it's so nice to be me without having to change me. I still really dislike how I look and feel, but I am a coward who doesn't want all of the hardships of becoming a woman. I'd rather press a button and POOF become one instantly. Oh well. A girl can dream.

Plus women are pretty.

i have many characters, you dont know me, pay no mind to my soulsbourne legacy (especially DS2 where i started as a guy, but jumped in the coffin that changes that and decided to keep it)

6

I feel like given the usual experience of uninitiated players with that coffin we need to acknowledge the bearer of the curse as canonically trans.

2

Yeah, I’m happy to play a variety of different characters in games. I don’t actually identify as Miner Willy.

5

The hardest thing about losing access to my masc voice is not being able to use vc in multiplayer. I've always hated how girls get treated in games.

6
Sunshinereply
piefed.ca

Yes, this is why I’m nervous with TF2 voice chat. Boys go wild when they hear Pauline speak.

7

The curse of being a woman online is that you're either seen as a squeaker, or as some mythological being that men don't know how to act around. Either way, they don't think you can play games

9
Sanguinereply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

1000% some of the shit I've heard hopping into random VCs for whatever video game I was playing at the time was wild.

Legit caveman speak. I have an aversion to "white knighting" but would usually find a way to shut it down without making things weirder. Got pretty good at it over the years and ended up being most likely to be invited back to play later.

The world needs more kind / assertive / non dramatic confrontation.

5
Sunshinereply

Men offline: acts normal.

Men online: monkey time.

4

Yeah, cis hetero dude here who always chooses to play female version in video games.

I almost exclusively play Project Zomboid (just like to play badass immortal survivor woman) and Cyberpunk 2077 (female V is just much better voice acting, and yeah, romancing Judy is canon, don't hate me).

5
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Is this from something? I rarely dislike reading the source content for a lot of your posts.

5
lemmy.world

I like to experience the widest variety of characters in RPGs, so I end up with one character of each race, one character of each class, and about half of them being female. My main is always a male, though.

I wonder what that says about me?

5

I'm totally the type.

In my defense there are a lot of games in which I can play a white man.

In Saints Row, the clothing options are better for women, and fashion is a big deal. SR4 is better about men's apparel than SR3.

But then I played women a lot in my TTRPG years.

4

My boyfriend masquarades as smokin hot women in some games he plays. Not sure what his reasoning is, probably multiple things: 1) women warriors in their shredded tunics with weapon & artillery holsters & their cleavage bursting out is a lot more entertaining to look at than some guy warrior. 2) probably interesting to note how differently other players treat you when you're a sexy lady, vs how they treat you when you're just some guy.

4

I am non-binary, but I'm definetely more androgynous/fem voice and (trying) style-wise, usually, so that tends to make the female character option more relatable to me. I also appreciate games that have more femboy/androgynous male options, not just HunkBro 9000.

4

I've played most of the Tails of games, and switch to one of the women or girls as soon as they are available. That is until Tales of Xillia. It was the first one to give you the choice at the start of the game, and I played the whole thing as Jude.

4

Yeah, I blame NV and Fallout 3. The female player model starts out just looking dead eyed meanwhile the male one starts looking uncanny as a whole. Also Fallout 1 and 2 did not help in that regard, my Fallout 2 characters should all have severe STDs but at least ai get free shit and can give someone death by Snu Snu.

4

Good luck losing days of your life on Fallout 2 alone, also forewarning that game is a bastard and obtuse to the absurd at times so have the wiki open.

2

I haven't played some games just because main character was male

4
lemmy.zip

All the time! Didn't get to be one in life,so why not take the chance in game? 🤷

4

Eh?! Huh? How did I become a part of this? 😭

I keep discovering new tastes as @[email protected] shows me what she likes

I can offer:

  • Literal TONS of yuri or yaoi
  • Lots of "straight" hentai art, but less than the yaoi...
  • AO3 fanfic recommendations
  • A nude, if you're into that :P
1

i'd not give'em a gener at all but that's rarely an option so what am i gonna do? :<

3

Yes of course, and I find it funny how we seem to need to find an excuse for that.

Yet, in the need to choose, I identify more as a woman, when it is up to me...

3

Uhh yeah I guess I am. It all started when I picked Jill for resident evil 1 because I liked her story and load out better. Ever since I just kinda picked female by default.

3

I even create female characters in terraria and they are not many pixels. heck I even did it on Littlewoods and that one is like 10 pixels in height. Not sure why this sounds curious to some people

2

Yeah, I mean, Im a man but would i have chose this for me. I dont know but let's find out.

2

somehow, despite being openly nonbinary for a while now, it's only now i realize that i always felt slightly uncomfortable/annoyed having to pick either male or female.
Just let me play as some cool nongendered thing, a penguin or a robot or something.

hell let me play as an ominous levitating crystal that emits a constant low droning noise. In Animal crossing.
