Melanie Martinez – Hades album ruleview

I haven't listened to her before, and didn't have any expectations from that record, but was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed most of the songs. Her voice is amazing, production is pretty solid, but what excited me the most is the messages she conveyed in every song on the record. I couldn't expect such emotional, raw, and angry reflection on the social topics in a mainstream (?) pop album. And that really resonated within me because of, you know, everything happening in the world now. But somewhat ironically, I felt that lyrics is also the weakest part of her work. They aren't terrible, there were no hilariously bad lines people shared last year after another big pop release (no name-dropping here). But it lacks consistency: after powerful and touching lines there are drops to the level of annoying twitter banters. The most telling example — "white Jesus" / "white God" figure — it's not brand new, and widely used in the critique of racist "christians". Here it appears multiple songs, and it would strike stronger if used (at least, pronounced so directly) more carefully. Same with using strong words like "incel" or "racist". Don't get me wrong — I'm all for calling racists racists. But again, these words are firmly associated with shit storms and flame wars on twitter, and she could choose wittier expressions.

Another pet peeve — "preachy" lyrics. Uncanny Valley is one of my favs, but it could be better and darker without the part reminding us that "beauty comes in every form" (in case we don't get the sarcasm). She could perfectly describe a complex domestic violence topic without labouring the obvious in absolutely great Posession, why not here?

Speaking of amazing songs, these are my favourites: Monopoly Man, Possession, Batshit Intelligence, Gutter, Disney Princess, and Uncanny Valley. All earworms, and perfect material to channel my emotions.

Least favourite: Chatroom, The Vatican.

My album rating is 8/10, and it's currently my AOTY (tied with Gorillaz).

[ER: Nightreign] The story of this game is so underrated

I bought Nightreign last summer expecting a "fortinte-clone" without a plot, for nerds addicted to bossfights (me). Now, after finishing all basic characters quests, I realised I've been totally fooled. As a fan of personal, intimate and emotional storylines, I prefer them to epic tales about gods and glory, which comprise most of the base game and the DLC. Finding out that every character has one such story you have to unravel was a good sign. But I didn't expect they are so well-crafted: mindblowing twists, one of the best cutscenes in the series (I'm not exaggerating), and, finally, lore that actually filling the gaps in the base game worldbuilding! I cannot recommend this game enough. And I think I'm obsessed. Don't know for how long, and would I actually grind in the "ranked" mode, but FromSoftware (and Junya Ishizaki personally) have my biggest respect once again.

fuck tankies rule

Had a heated argument with a tankie who glorified stalin and lenin. So fucking tired. The worst thing he's a discord mod of a good streamer, and i left the server because i can't be there anymore. Context: i'm russian whose grand-grandparents were repressed and forcibly relocated. Left Russia several years ago because i didn't want to support the aggressive war in Ukraine. And his american (no offense to amreicans tho) ass tried to explain me that stalin is an actual hero who singlehandedly saved Europe from fascism, and all repressed were rich "bourgeois land owners" (actually, no. but even if yes, that's a terrorism). Then he and other user started posting stupid tankie memes. Ofc they ignored my questions how LGBT+, religious groups and small nations were treated and deleted the message. I'm sick of that shit. Needed to vent somewhere.

What's your favourite pop album of the year?

Hello! Lemmy has quite a lot of music communities, but sadly there is not so much discussion of music—usually people just post music and videos. I'd like to initiate a little discussion here as you see.

For me it's (so far) definitely Miley Cyrus — Something Beautiful. I didn't expect much, but was blown away by how good the record is. I think she perfectly conveyed the flair of gorgeous and energetic 80's pop scene.

Also enjoyed FKA Twigs' and Rebecca Black's albums, and these are my top-3 at the moment.

And what are your picks?

Texas gamers rule

a scan of an old magazine shared by user @[email protected]

text:

at first it doesn't seem that texas and video games would mix. texans are big strong men who ride horses and never cry. video games are kid stuff. but when you think about it, video games are blasting aliens out of the sky and defending civilization from evil forces. video gamers don't cry. when you die in a video game, you shrug it off with a shake of the reset button. video games and texas go together like meat and potatoes. in the 1980s, instead of roping cattle and having gunfights, texans are gunning down cybertronic-actuated quasi- spheroids.

Björk album covers. Day 5: Biophilia

What is Biophilia? The literal translation from Greek is "love to nature", and I always thought there's nothing else behind this word. Until I googled for the term (I use Ecosia actually) and it showed me the definition:

The biophilia hypothesis suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Edward O. Wilson introduced and popularized the hypothesis in his book, Biophilia (1984)

I have no doubt that Björk absolutely adheres to this hypothesis, considering how much love she expresses towards nature, and how nature-centered her latest ablums are. And her 7th LP is no exception. She usually focuses on a certain element, certain aspect of nature and searches the connections between it and our everyday feelings and emotions. Here she explores the theme of space: how birth of stars and planets is similar to the birth of feelings between human beings. And how love can be as hard as moving tectonic plates, and as hot as magma.

And they say back then our universe was a cold black egg Until the god inside burst out and from its shattered shell He made what became the world we know

These are the lines from the Cosmogony song, one of the most interesting on the album lyrically. In the verses, Björk explores the origins of the universe and mentions different theories and myths. Looking at the cover, you can come up with one more hypothesis—what if Björk is the origin of the Universe as we know it?

Björk herself looks like a red nebula:

Her face reflects deep tranquility and motherly love, and she is surrounded by her children—stars and constellations. In her hands she holds a whimsical and shiny small harp (appreciate if you know and share in the comments the exact name of this instrument), and a mineral resembling a heart—yet another symbol of love.

It's an absolute amazing cover, and I wouldn't wonder if for someone it's her best album art. But i got himself into this thankless task, and should out one masterpiece over the other guided by "vibes".

And they tell me it's 8/10 and 6th place.

My highest achievement in Expedition 33 (yet)

I guess I love suffering and play games only because it's not enough in real life (that's why my favourite genres are souls-likes and fightings, but that's another story). I'm currently playing Expedition 33, and this game marks some areas as "dangerous", implying that the player is underleveled to defy local bosses and mobs. But hey, it sounds like a challenge! The moveset of the first boss I've met was very small—only 3 moves. But that was not the issue here: I dealt very little damage, whereas they simply one-shot me. After two days I finally made it: 37 minutes of patience, and 265 successful parries in my winning attempt. I'm very proud of myself :) It was not the longest time I've spent on a boss, but by far the longest attempt
