Well now he can't open for Ed Sheeran anymore.

I used to be a fan of this guy. I still am, but I used to, too.

Gorillaz first LP got me into dub, way back in high school. Fun fact, that song isn't a nod to the Hollywood actor, it's a nod to the Jamaican dub MC who used it as his stage name.

Not surprised to see the Gorillaz frontman in the right here, but I am surprised to see the Gorillaz frontman. When did he come out as 3D? Have I been under a rock?

He's the lead singer of Blur, Damon Albarn. This has been known since day 1 as far as I know. He was famous before Gorillaz and when you hear Blur its obvious its his voice.

did a road trip once to nyc in the early 2000s with my bud and only once we got there, I realized, hey! Blur is playing tomorrow night! we can still try to get tickets. I don't remember why we were there. We saw some cool museums and met up with some cool people and shit. But the fucker claimed to never have heard of Blur, but I knew he was a fan of Oasis. I couldn't put it together enough to convince him this was an awesome opportunity. Years later the fucker was like, yeah, sorry about that. Seriously what I did not do was ditch my friend to go to an awesome show, because why would I ditch my friend, even though he's an asshole.

IMO their newest album is really good. TBH, the only one I've enjoyed in the last 10-15 years. And they were really good live this summer.

Speaking out for people who are being genocided because of someone else's sky-daddy? Can I give you a blow job, ya know, if you want one?

For a lot of people it's not because of any gods, that's just a convenient justification. Colonization is usually about material goals and benefits for the colonizers. Boiling it down to gods erases this aspect, so I'd caution against doing that.

I think we should be cautious about viewing religion as an excuse when it comes to doing something immoral. You never hear that religion is just an excuse when people are doing religious based charity, it’s always assumed to be an honest expression of their religious faith.

5

I'd argue it usually is an "excuse" in charitable cases; that is to say, people already inclined to do charity might say it's because of their religious beliefs. I just don't really care about that because a good thing is good.

I think your comment was taken as being sarcastic, rather than literally offering a blow job for being a good human. I'd like to think he'd (Gorillaz front man) be flattered by the offer

being genocided because of someone else’s sky-daddy

Oh Wow! Is it edgy time? Can I join in? Atheism also causes genocides!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodian_genocide#Religious_groups

Under the leadership of Pol Pot, who was an ardent Marxist atheist,[163] the Khmer Rouge enforced a policy of state atheism. According to Catherine Wessinger, "Democratic Kampuchea was officially an atheist state, and the persecution of religion by the Khmer Rouge was only matched in severity by the persecution of religion in the communist states of Albania (see Religion in communist Albania) and North Korea (see Freedom of religion in North Korea)."[164] All religions were banned, and the repression of adherents of Islam,[165] Christianity,[166] and Buddhism was extensive. It is estimated that up to 50,000 Buddhist monks were massacred by the Khmer Rouge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Albania#Communism

The Agrarian Reform Law of August 1946 nationalized most property of religious institutions, including the estates of monasteries, orders, and dioceses. Many clergy and believers were tried, tortured, and executed. All foreign Catholic priests, monks, and nuns were expelled in 1946.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_religion_in_North_Korea#Status_of_religious_freedom

Article 256 of North Korea's criminal law stipulates that anyone who engages in superstitious practices shall be sentenced to a labor discipline camp.[5][6] Articles 23 and 29 of the Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Act explicitly prohibit the dissemination of superstition.[7][8]

EDIT : I guess there are some thin skinned edgelords coming in from [email protected] or whichever instance that still live like it's the 00s and think that throwing around phrases like "Sky daddies" is the best way to manage secular discourse in public

-21

Whoa there, someone is defensive.

I guess when you worship a self-described "jealous" god who encourages slavery and genocide, you've got a lot it be embarrassed about huh

So? That's whataboutism. We know there's been a lot of wrongdoings over the history. This doesn't take away to the fact that Iranians are being killed because of religion reasons right now.

He is not saying “I want to be treated like an adult”. He’s saying “your position contains a fatal logical flaw”. Which you did not address, and instead proceeded to get your panties all twisted in a bunch.

Soooooo, who’s the childish one again?

Marxism describes religion as a reaction to oppression hence Marxist in non-marxist system tends to support religious minorities. However, once marxists system is implemented, religious people become a counter point to utopia because their very existence proves that oppression still exists.

This means the number of atheists in a post marxist society actually becomes a success metric. This should explain all 3 mentioned wiki links.

You still have not addressed his actual point. You are just whining about him not using your preferred nomenclature.

8

I don't have to. I want to play edgy time. Why can he say "sky daddies" but I can't say "the cambodian genocide had a horrifying atheism motivated aspect?"

-10

Is "jealous genocider who condones slavery and thinks women should shut the fuck up" a more accurate descriptor?

Like are you sure you want to get into it about how awful your god is?

16

The person you're responding to is not the user that said sky daddy. Just a fyi

moth gets it. it can be uncomfortable when confronted with the fact that your faith is a lie and is used daily as an excuse to murder people.

It’s hard to be neutral when tens of thousands of CHILDREN have been murdered by a rabbid Israeli government.

How am I taking "don't ever be neutral" out of context? How can that even be a thing given that it should always apply?

1

"Never forget" - how can you say that. You forget something every day.

"I don't like it" - how can you not like [insert something everybody likes but not what is talked about here]

The world is full of context. You are deliberately ignoring this one.

Yes, it is a shame. People here are no different than MAGA, (your favorite shit group), etc. in how they polarize things, how they are manipulated and how easily they dig into a us-vs-them mentality. From my perspective the same kind of toxic way of thinking.

Just imagine people randomly not being neutral about vaccines or internet or whatever topic they have no idea about. Oh we already have that and they hate people that are not neutral there... sheep is really all I can think off with such behavior.

1
lemmy.world

I was leaning more in favor of "avoiding random side" rather than "not picking a side when you don't know".

There are many many cases in which we don't know, yet, we can still take a reasonably correct side:

  • We don't know if the bus driver is a psychopat, and yet, we still take the bus.
  • We don't know "how" a balanced diet is good for the body, yet, we still try to follow and recommend it.

By proxy, by incomplete knowledge, by relying on trustworthy groups of people who do know, we can reasonably side with the group that claims that a "balanced diet" is good. Same with vaccines.

The homework is to pick those "experts" and approach to at least some partial knowledge.

1

Exactly, without knowledge you are lost. You can not even identify who is a trustworthy source of information.

the em dash is a valid and important bit of punctuation that has been around longer than you have existed, and will be here far beyond when your unremarkable life ends

22

Oh I totally agree. Im just saying, as language evolves and connotations are applied. I'd be pissed if I was Damon, quoted with an emdash as to belittle the importance of what was said. Wild to me.
