I remember a YouTube channel with some folks drop testing a bunch of phones using a drone - and some Motorola smartphone with a polymer display (IIRC) survived a much bigger drop than the 3310 did.

I think the 3310 got its reputation because it was ubiquitous and at the same time somewhat tough - but it's nowhere near as tough as say some Ericssons before it or some Siemens models after. Maybe this is also backed by the fact that phones got progressively more brittle after that.

Naturally people reach for the low hanging fruit to make a joke.

The bacon thing was... really weird.

I mean, I like bacon, but... not like enough to make a lifestyle out of it

absentbirdreply
lemmy.world

I heard it was in part a push from the pork industry. They were struggling to get grocery shoppers to keep buying bacon during the anti-fat fads of the 90s, so they spent millions lobbying fast food places and restaurants to make bacon a premium add-on 'bacon makes it better'; then the fast food marketing machine slowly brainwashed a generation into bacon obsession.

I think it was an overblown reaction about masculinity and being against vegetarianism and whatnot. Obviously it became less explicitly about that, but i do think it stems from those feelings originally.

Thank you for stopping by.

This is the OG "haha yes" meme, predating the sickos one by... like... 1-2 years according to knowyourmeme (going not by time of creation but their widespread usage as memes)

12

I went full-on bacon eating back in 2012 because who cared. A year later I'm fat and slow. Fuck those Mayans.

Those Nokias aren't dead, they were just abandoned by the infrastructure. Pop in a new battery and you'll be playing snake in no time.

I feel like most of them were already there to begin with. I'm not sure about his case but when you dig down into it so many of them claim that they've been hiding all their lives.

You know to escape the woke mob that doesn't like their racism or whatever.

It’s fascinating really. He went directly from a wanna-be to a has-been, directly bypassing the state of “being”. Scientific studies have been conducted on the phenomenon, but it is still a mystery as to how this happened.

I don't know what 'headline' or 'Coachella' means so that's a yes. Unless headline as in newspaper and Coachella as in a line of sex toys... which wouldn't change the answer to the question.

-5
feddit.online

It's pretty wild you know the brand of sex toys but don't know the most famous music festival in the world.

4

I agree, look at the sexual harassment alone. It's pretty sickening how full grown ass adults were treating him like some sexual object. He was what 14 or 15? So gross

3

He's the dude version of Brittney male sexual abuse just looks a little different and isn't recognized as readily or taken as seriously, which is saying something because abusing young female pop stars is super common and happens constantly and is also not taken super seriously.

I don't specifically remember lays bags being empty a big joke in 2012, but I wouldn't be surprised. I do remember the rest of these.

Lays bags having more air than chips is older than the internet.

13

I'm not saying they didn't have more air than chips then, I'm saying as a specific Internet meme it felt more like a 2017 thing.

3

I haven't heard someone mention 9GAG in forever. Someone without context today might think it was a porn site.

As a web dev, I feel awkward reminiscing about the thin period of web history when IE was a solidly built, standards-compliant browser.

It was like the IE team saw their history was causing them to lose all market share, and committed to fixing misdeeds since they held an underdog position. But for most, it was too little too late.

For several years, I tested in IE, not Chrome, because it was most strictly standards-compliant, and I could be sure that if it worked there, it would work in other browsers. (Now, if you use Edge, it’s just a repaint of Chrome)

31

I loved Opera for a good couple of years. Came back to it around 2007 and I was shocked at what it became.

6
tempestreply
lemmy.ca

I didn't start dev until after the chrome hegemony but I assume ie was only compliant because MS was the one writing the standards. Much like how chrome is essentially the defacto standard now.

6

At this point in time, Chrome was jumping bounds ahead of the others with standards, and most websites were specifically written for webkit, even beginning to disregard Firefox. Worse, Chrome was often going back and forth on how a certain new standard should implement, leading to, for instance, CSS files declaring 7 or 8 different ways of doing a linear-gradient.

Your sentiment on Microsoft isn't unique, which is part of why the web consortium wasn't actually keen on listening to them most of the time. Them having monetary/OS influence didn't actually lead to a lot on the W3C - they went ahead of them for most ActiveX work.

4

It was really hard to use ie at the time. I worked at lockheed making a javascript repair sim, and it took 3 minutes to load in IE vs 10 secobds in chrome

God I forgot about the whole bacon thing.

I remember it as the same time the narwhal bacon'ed. Never got the appeal of that meme.

I remember being really annoyed by the whole thing. People went from kale to bacon.

I can't judge anyone for finding Skibidi Toilet funny or amusing. I watched more than my fair share of YTMND, Badger Badger, and Salad Fingers.

But those are still funny/weird though, skibidi is just "funny for 3 year olds" level stupid.

1

But those are still funny/weird though

To you. And to me. Not to my parents, and I doubt many others.

It's kind of wild how inevitable the cycle seems to be of every generation thinking, so confidently, that they have the unique recipe to all the best things and that all other generations had/have everything wrong.

6
lemmy.world

Skibidi Toilet isn't really a comedy tho. It's just giant mech fights and apparently the creator of it, some racist Georgian🇬🇪 zoomer lost all the rights to it after being fucked over by some company he signed a contract with.

Yeah, wild lore both in the show itself and in the background. Got into it because my niece fucking loves it and just... no shit, it is a wild time.

19
BreadOvenreply
lemmy.world

What? Mech fights? I've only seen the head in the toilet. Fuck racists though.

5

Yeah. It goes from funny toilet head man thing into this weird war between the toilets and camera head people and soon just turns into giant ass mech fights. My niece herself said she thinks the series is an allegory for arms races and, tbh, I cannot fault her for it because the later episodes get really wild and pretty well animated.

As for the creator, DaFuqBoom!, yeah he has made some weird stuff in the past includes jokes against George Floyd. Why would a Georgian, the country not the state, joke about that? I have no idea. And also he was fucked over by Invisible Narratives who took all the rights from the series, took all the adsense dollars he made, and also took all the money from the deals he made.

Like as shitty as a person as he is, I can't help but feel bad. I assumed he was rolling in it, but he's broke and has seen 0 return from the popularity of his series because of an unfair contract. Finding that out just felt weird. Like there's this much cloak and dagger about the funny toilet vs camera show? What a time to be alive.

2012 was peak rage comics. I remember scrolling f7u12 for hours on end. Then one day, it was like a switch flipped and they were all terrible. Almost like post-nut clarity. I don't know if I changed or if they changed. But they instantly became unfunny.

8

I think we as a species ran out of funny subject matter for rage comics. I still assert that they’re better than wojaks though

4

I agree; I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe the original creator of this image lived somewhere where what memes were popular there was lagging a few years behind everyone else, haha.

The words Bacon and Epic can't be put side by side without mentioning EpicMealTime.

Man singlehandedly kept that fad alive way longer than it ever should have been. I wonder what they're up to nowadays?

13

I remember seeing him pop up on youtube a couple years back. Checking again, the last post on the channel was 2 years ago and the original format petered out after "Muscles Glasses" and others left because Harley was being a douche.

5
Omgpwniesreply

It's amusing how each generation seems to independently come across the "empty chip bag" meme and the actual explanation - the bag is intentionally oversized and slightly inflated to give the chips a buffer against being crushed. I remember seeing it come up about once a decade, including pre-(consumer)internet.

4

Yeah it's almost someone thinking that making a shrinkflation lost in 2026 is some kind of groundbreaking news

You must be way younger than me. First meme I saw was the hamster dance in 1995.
