Some thoughts after 3 years on Lemmy
PS: The discussion on this post turned mainly into a (one-sided) debate about whether the content of my contributions passes the Lemmy ideological purity test. So dull, yet so predictable. To be clear: I stand by everything I've written on Lemmy. Efforts at shaming will fall flat, as will pompous denunciations and attempts at dunking based on virtual sleuthing. I'm far too secure in my convictions to be bothered by a brigade of insufferably self-righteous progressives trying to one-up each other in their efforts to root out dissidence. To the (quite numerous) others who offered interesting feedback and kind words, thanks.
Here are some reflections on my personal experience of federated social media.
A bit of background. In the 90-9-1 trichotomy, I am one of the 9%: an occasional active participant. As of 3 years ago I had been dabbling in social media since I was a teenager in the 90s, but never very deeply. Newsgroups and IRC; a bit of invisible blogging; various techie web forums; Twitter from 2008 (hardly any tweets); Facebook in the early 2010s (a post or two per week at the peak); then Reddit. As of 2023 I had been "on" Reddit for nearly a decade and not even written 100 comments. Then I decided on a whim to join Lemmy.
The good
Three years later I have written nearly 100 original posts and over 3000 comments! This is an order of magnitude more than I used social media in the previous 25 years. How to explain it?
A bunch of things. I liked the UX instantly, it's much better than Reddit. No ads, so no nagging feeling that you're bankrolling a corporation. A (slightly) higher level of conversation quality than Reddit.
Probably the single biggest explanation is just that it's quieter. On Reddit I always arrived too late to the party. It's hard to find the motivation to say something when a thread already has 800 comments. On Lemmy, I'd arrive 12 hours after the post and there were only 6 comments. If I take the time to compose my thoughts, somebody might actually see it! I get the paradox here (there are tons more eyes passively looking at Reddit), but the "quiet room" effect is real.
Highlights
Hands down the best community I've found here is (no surprise) a specialized one: [email protected]. Lots of original content and genuine expertise, zero vitriol or toxicity. Perfect. In a similar vein, [email protected], where you can literally post pics of pigeons to an adoring audience.
I've also got some value out of [email protected] and [email protected] for one of those reasons: the ambient expertise. It's not really breaking news: Linux and FOSS and privacy are really the only subjects where the fediverse can go toe-to-toe with the corporates in terms of expertise. IMO that's already an achievement that should not be squandered!
Quite a few of my 96 posts are original content ("OG", ugh). A whole bunch are photos from my bike-touring escapades, which I posted somewhat arbitrarily to [email protected] , [email protected], and [email protected]. I rationalize this as an alternative to blogging: instead of hosting your own invisible vanity website, you can write what you have to say in a place where you have less control but where people may actually read it. It's the logic of social media, basically, but minus the ads and opaque algos and shareholders. As expected, my holiday photos were not viral sensations, but they did attract some love and a few nice comments. Success!
The less good
My experience on Lemmy has taught me something that I knew in theory but (somehow) not quite in practice: Socializing via text on a screen is quite hard to pull off successfully. The lack of physical accountability, the inherent difficulty of text communication (avoiding ambiguity without the help of a face or body language), all this tends to make people into worse versions of themselves. Me included to some extent, I'm sure.
And then there's the echo-chamber problem. It turns out that when people have an option to avoid dealing with ideas they disagree with (even slightly), very many of them choose that option. IMO this is a major (perhaps fatal) problem with social media. The fediverse is not magically immune from it.
Lowlights
The first - and definitely worst - experience I've had was 2 years ago when I got banned from [email protected] for "racism and gaslighting" on the basis of, well, pretty much nothing except the moderator's paranoia. Shut out of the single community that had most drawn me to Lemmy, I tried [email protected] and in short order had a similar experience. I am a European liberal who votes green, and a moderate on social questions, although admittedly I do enjoy debate. To be shut down so brutally for daring to question progressive doxas in the politest terms - for me this was quite a shocking confirmation of the intolerance of a certain section of the (mainly US) left.
On [email protected] I got a virtual slap on the wrist for posting an article offering constructive criticism of degrowth. I'm basically a degrowther myself but I believe it's important to stress-test one's ideas (cf. J S Mill). The moderators politely disagreed. Fair enough. I deleted my post and unsubscribed.
The problem on [email protected], meanwhile was (is) slightly different. It's that the community is swamped by a single hyperactive member who posts relentlessly on exactly the same themes with the same POV, and - the echo chamber, again - responds badly to any pushback. I contacted the moderator in private and received a virtual shrug.
So I decided to ditch all politics and stick to photos and niche subjects. But even here it has not been plain sailing. A (slightly whiny) post I wrote a few months ago about the difficulty of installing Linux on cheap hardware (a pretty niche subject!) received an avalanche of mockery and insults that really took me aback. And then I really stirred up a hornets' nest quite recently in this very community when I proposed a feature which would hugely improve my experience of Lemmy without affecting anyone else. Can't link to that because it got (very belatedly) deleted, ostensibly because offtopic but in reality because the proposal was unpopular. In fact this was my last post on Lemmy to date. Probably not a coincidence.
Conclusions
For me personally, the jury's still out. I'm pretty ambivalent about social media in general. Since The Atlantic introduced a discussion space a few months ago, I admit that I've transferred some of my energy there. And yes, it's been a better experience. But the reason is no indictment of Lemmy: It's that The Atlantic has a paywall, which essentially means I'm talking only to privileged people like myself there. I enjoy Hacker News even more, but that's because it's super specialized (politics is mostly banned), and professionally moderated, and also (attention: wild POV!) because it's full of engineers and other spectrumy types who take a Spock-like approach to communication. The problems I've had on Lemmy are problems of all generalist social media, not specifically of the fediverse.
In my case what remains are the figures. Despite everything, I have contributed more, and more personally, on Lemmy than I ever did on the R-site or anywhere else. That has to count for something. Corporate social media is a manipulative money-driven spyware-fueled nightmare. The federated decentralized type is obviously, plainly, better. That's why it has to succeed.

Just so yall know who some of you are agreeing with, this person managed to get permanently booted off the ![email protected] community which is very VERY tolerant of differing opinions compared to the average fediverse community. I remember them, they kept defending racist news outlets for no good reason and using far right talking points and dogwhistles (while claiming to be a leftist), until the mods got tired of their constant denial.
Modlog (and this post's comment section) shows some genocide denial too, no shit they don't feel welcome in some communities…
One of the points of moving to Lemmy, for me at least, was to get away from people like them.
and some of us came here to get away from folks like you. the keyboard comment police warriors who want to ban/report/shame anyone who says anything they don't like.
We're talking overt racism and genocide denial here 😂 enough to disgust even a rather conservative community, but you do you.
This entire post is users either pointing it out and op getting upset about it or those like op praises op for defending the indefensible
So, you're a debate bro who argues Syrian refugees increase crime and terrorism, trans women in sports and children accessing trans healthcare are legitimate issues, and support Israel and claim there isn't a genocide.
You say shit like "So many hypersensitive thin-skinned vacuum-cleaner owners! Perhaps they're projecting their insecurities because deep down they know I'm right." and argue intolerance that people don't support your terrible viewpoints?
You're peak fucking reddit mate.
To me the good of the Fediverse is that it highlights dishonest people like yourself.
Holy cow that comment history. Geez. Yeah. If this is who is complaining about the Fediverse as an echo chamber then we must be doing something right.
Dude I just scrolled their history for funsies (I'm sure mine has plenty of dumb shit in it too so I'm not immune to idiocy....)
The guy who wants an auto block option for people who downvote their stuff is complaining about this being an "echo chamber.". That. Is. Hilarious.
didn't mention .ml at all so i assume OP has blocked the second biggest instance for too many wrong opinions lol
edit: apparently it's not the second biggest anymore, still one of the biggest anyway and technically the "main instance" so you'd think it would be mentioned in some way but yeah looking at this guy's comments it makes sense
Precisely
hahaha oh boy
the magical free-speech experiment launched by idealistic commies of course collapsed in an authoritarian heap almost immediately
the commies just wanted a place to dictate where they couldn't get banned
but everyone still says "look reddit bad"
I couldn't figure out why they aren't on Reddit.... It is such a safe place for them... Why are they all here... I think you're exactly right
Reddit is a safe space for whom?
On the contrary, I think the impulse to check a user’s post history and judge them is a bad habit on Lemmy.
Take me. Scroll through my history, and you’ll probably peg me as a AI Tech Bro and a… closet neolib, maybe? I dunno. But if it’s along those lines, you could not be more wrong, on either count.
With the exception of extreme trolls (or moderators doing their thing), I think Lemmy’s culture of “purity checks” is poison to the platform. It turns communities insular, toxic, and angry like it does on Reddit, governed by takes that have nothing to do with the particular thread. It kills the focus of communities. It rewards conformance.
And this thread is a good example. I thought OP was raising some good general points, but digging previous comments up threw all that out the window. I’ve seen this happen in other threads, where a technical or fandom discussion devolves into unrelated, raging arguments on something I did not come there to read.
If you don't want to be judged by extremely toxic takes, don't post them.
That is the same as saying "no disrespect" then immediately saying some extremely disrespectful shit . Sorry you deservedly lost all credibility in my opinion.
I don't know if the original poster posted those takes, but if they did they deserved all the blame. I mean there are literally thousands of hours of unedited video shopping the genocide. To even try to say it didn't happen means you're a troll a shit box.
Yeah god forbid we judge people by the things they say, right?
Counterargument: I don't want to engage in good faith with a bigot.
It hardly needs to be said, but the problem is many people here define "bigot" as "someone who doesn't agree with me".
Said dude who wrote this shit:
Maybe it's you who are the problem, at least sometimes?
Good someone went to the trouble of digging that up. A link would have been useful. I stand by everything I have ever written, otherwise I would have deleted it.
Okay but dont you see how it's a pretty big window into your intolerant thinking? This imaginative conglomerate, which to you is a single body, the "T" in LGBT, you are saying that all their demands have been radical and damaging. What even are you talking about? That they want to exist and get their gender affirming procedures? That they'd like society to recognize their gender, when Trans people have been around more than thousands of years in human culture and are even in other biological animals? What other fuckin policies would you be talking about? It just feels like your little dog whistle...
Love that their reply to you is just proving their transphobia
Sometimes rights can be zero-sum. For one person to gain them, somebody else has to lose them. That's the issue in female sports. As for youth gender medicine, it is clearly an ethical minefield where nothing is automatically right or wrong. To paint these things as black and white is a form of religious thinking. Only the US progressive left is sticking to the absolutist line you're selling. It's been abandoned everywhere else. Presumably this is a consequence of America's extreme political polarization.
Anyway, I find this subject incredibly boring so that's all I have to say on the matter.
Good but then do not bother people with your "bigot is a meaningless word nowadays" when you say such hateful shit. That's just pathetic.
I have never written anything "hateful".
Here the link: https://lemmy.world/comment/15539662
Though, you can't see anything because it was deleted, so you should check their mod log
but since i can't link a specific action in the mod log i gotta make a screen
Bigotry isn't subjective. Bigots just tend to think they aren't bigoted.
Except you're pretty clearly actually bigoted.
Yeah, why would you judge people by what they say on a forum where all you know about them is what they say? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvgZtdmyKlI
Thank you for expressing perfectly the points I didn't have the energy to make myself. It's a comfort to know that there are other people here who still believe in free expression and enjoy hearing opinions they don't necessarily share.
PS: But judging by the upvote tallies, we're outnumbered about 3 or 4 to one. I have no idea how democracy will continue to exist if this is representative of the offline world.
Free expression does not mean no push back. You shouldn't complain about someone calling you out because they don't agree.
However, I don't like it when people get banned from communities for disagreement. Unless you spam, or do not engage in a good faith argument (both of which are noise, not signal) you should be allowed to post.
I have literally never complained when someone disagreed with me politely. I love debate. I don't like rudeness, insults, mockery, brigading, and all the rest of the litany of social-media toxicity.
Agreed on brigading, with a caveat.
Sometimes what feels like brigading is just a lot of people being genuinely pissed off at you enough to stop lurking. I have experienced this myself, from saying something dumb, or being confidently ignorant, etc, and thereby attracting the anger of the mob.
Usually there's someone in there willing to correct me, so I learn something from the experience. Which I would never have done if I just got annoyed at the pile of hostility and assumed I was right.
Another problem is that rudeness and insults and mockery are not objective. There is no set definition.
For some people, it's rude to say a trans man is a man, because the idea seems unscientific, or against their religion, or just unfamiliar and therefore possibly dangerous. They have a visceral reaction of disgust or fear, or uncertainty, or all three, because they don't know what this means for the world.
For the majority of people, it's either fine to say, or not important. Someone wants to be a guy, what do I care? There are real problems to worry about.
But for a trans man, if someone says that trans men aren't real men, it's not just rude, it feels like a kick in the balls. For them, the stakes are very high.
The person saying it might feel like they're taking crazy pills when they get such a strong pushback, because to them, it's simple. Dick = boy, pussy = girl. They learned it before they could remember learning anything, and never even dreamed it could be more complicated than that.
So they genuinely aren't being intentionally rude, but the other person feels very insulted. See? It's like when I used to be an obnoxious atheist, and mocked the idea of religious belief because it just seemed so pointless and silly to pretend there's a big old man in the sky who made everything.
Before I knew it was more complicated. I did not consider that a) You cannot actually disprove God, so arguing about it is very silly indeed, and b) if someone builds their psyche around an idea, one that holds great meaning to them, and helps them see meaning in this life, and gives them joy... Why would I fight that?
(As long as they aren't being control freaks and trying to impose their own beliefs on other people, of course.)
Anyway, the point there is that young me would not think he was insulting someone's entire pysche by mocking the idea of God, but he was. And therefore, the people I may have come to terms with back then, and learned from, dismissed me as an atheist, and I dismissed them as too stupid to see the obvious.
So it's not as simple as "Everyone just stop being rude! Jeez! Stop calling me a genocide denier!" and expecting a pleasant, unthreatening debate.
Sometimes the truth can feel like a threat because of how wrong you are.
This whole argument (neatly summarized in the final line) is based on the premise that whenever someone gets pushback it's because they're wrong. I beg to differ. Anyway: sterile debate, I hear your points. Let's call this a day.
Get a thicker skin. The world is not designed to cater to your specific sensibilities. Taking a shitty opinion and gussying it up in pretty language isn't some magic spell that makes you immune to push back, and the fact that some people are less than polite doesn't invalidate their response.
You want to be able to push buttons with your edgy "it's just a debate bro" opinions while being spared impassioned responses. Too fucking bad, bro. Either man up and get thick enough skin to wade in the water or stay the fuck off the beach.
This comment makes my point. I'm arguing that federated social media would be a more pleasant place, with more interesting contributions, and definitely a wider demographic profile, if less of the comments were aggressive and profanity-laden like this one.
I'm not sure the majority of us want to make this a more pleasant place for people who express the ideas you do. You're free to express them, but you're not free from criticism.
And you're fucking wrong. We don't need the sterility of traditional social media because that only existed in the first place to be advertiser-friendly.
You aren't better, more correct, or more valid because you play the respectability politics game, you're just bitter that the game isn't as effective here without the incentive of advertiser-friendliness to wield as a cudgel.
Either grow up and learn to meet people where they are instead of expecting people to play by and cater to your personal preferences, or fuck right off.
Free expression goes two ways, dude
You're judging the resilience of democracy based on upvotes and downvotes?
Charlie Kirk got exactly what he deserved.
Luigi was a hero.
I was waiting for this comment. Since others won't bother checking, here's the fact-check.
Incorrect.
Correct.
Correct. I support every sovereign country's right to exist.
Incorrect. Literally no opinion because it's unfalsifiable.
On the vacuum cleaner, I was totally right and stand by my based take.
Its a sovereign country that is the colonization of an existing people's home 😅
Its a settler colonialist nation trying to build an ethnostate in someone else's homeland, and currently doing so by overt ethnic cleansing 😅
If any state is a legitimate one then all you have to do to legitimize any settler colonial state is set up a government and all of a sudden you're allowed to be there and murder or displace all the other inhabitants, and any attack on you by those colonized people facing the wholesale destruction of their society can be claimed as self defense 😅
I mean almost every single country was established the same way. The only difference is Israel is doing it now in modern times when we should know better.
Yes, though isreal is perhaps more completely commited to building an ethnostate than many countries have been, at least to my knowledge of history. Which granted, I don't know that much. I've been trying to learn more
No. Not all settlement has been like this. This kind of systematic land grab is a recent phenomenon. It's not comparable to the vile conquering and pillaging of the older times. It's worse.
I think you need to review your history. Not what you learned in high school.
Lol you don't know shit about history, and our high schools are much better than the U$ anyway.
Off such a sad take. Hint: "better" doesn't mean correct or accurate.
Best plan! There's a huge mob here that loves to fight and argue. I remember one comment to my other username said something to the tune of "...and I won't back down until my revenge thirst is quenched!" or something dramatic like that. Some just enjoy the fight.
Once I deleted my old account, then started this one, and banned all the trolls and politics, smooth sailing.
But I'd never recommend Lemmy to my real life friends. Way too many keyboard warriors here calling or cheering violence, thinking the US is gonna have a violent revolution. lol
If you ignore the politics, it's cool being on an platform where you can instance-hop if you don't like how your current one is being run.
A feature I like about Lemmy is that the mod-log is public and that you can go from comments in the mod-log directly to the related discussions.
People should really check out OP's mod-log and make up their own minds.
Especially about the things he wrote about in his "Lowlights" section.
The mod logs are public in a sense, but also completely useless against the power hungry mods since they can ban and hide all the details of post/comment removals, and hide behind the anonymous mod name.
I'd rather react to posts and comments based on the content rather than peer into the author's background to decide whether to put a black hat or white hat on them.
The context of the author is valid when judging their content.
Right, if your personal social justice hero and somebody who clicked Like on a tweet you found offensive say the exact same thing, I'm guessing you upvote your hero and douchevote the other person so you won't be complicit in their evil. Congrats!
"Background" is a funny way of describing the things someone believes, says and acts on in the world
No, "backtround" is a perfectly normal term for history. There must be a better way to pretend to make whatever point you're trying for.
Then just say you're in favor of ignoring the OP's facist history and present, instead of doing the thing where you deliberately phrase it as vaguely as possible in order to frame people as unreasonable for not accepting wretched and failed antihuman ideas.
I haven't even looked up their history - so apparently you're not a mind reader, and things can be obvious to you without being true. Two good life lessons.
They should indeed, if they care that much. I stand by everything I wrote, namely a bunch of banal viewpoints that are completely middle-of-the-road anywhere outside the bubble of Lemmy.
People classified as "progressive" make up 9-15% of the US population by one count (I believe another pollster put it at 7%). Americans here who are arguing with me are in fact arguing with the overwhelming majority of their compatriots.
A viewpoint being popular doesn't make it right.
Indeed. That includes those that are so popular around here.
"Middle-of-the-road" in a land of fascist "compatriots". If you care about the world and not just the US, you would quickly (or maybe slowly for you in particular) find out that the overwhelming majority of the world are "radicals" (gasp!) who consider Israel to be currently conducting a genocide in Palestine.
looks in the mod log
Yep i guess i can skip this section of the post
I do wish the removed content was always available from the modlog. We're not immune to a mod saying something that someone said something that they didn't strictly say. While we're better about keeping things open, i thing we're better protected with keeping it all available.
that and i wish you couldnt get banned from a sublemmy you've never interacted with.
just check my modlog, i've never broken any rules anywhere, yet i have the label of a "tankie bootlicker" forever stuck to my account from getting banned from a sublemmy i've never interacted with, probably cus the people running it are more paranoid than even stalin was
edit: it's not even a sublemmy apparently lol. it's a... whatever u call communities in piefed
If you were blocked on a community because they were hostile modded, you probably don't want to be there anyway.
yeah, it's definitely a community i very much don't care for.
it just sucks having that in my mod log, u know
Yeah, sadly only the comments are visible, i hope it's fixed in Lemmy 1.0
They're even continuing it in the thread
Sounds like a Zionist but then how did they manage to get banned from Feddit.org?
They let the mask slip too much
They're even blaming us for not wanting to go along with them that their experience has nothing to do with their comments or posts
genocide means nothing nowadays (since ww2) back in the good old days the species had to have no surviving members, now there are "genocide survivors".
If you try to kill somebody and fail, that's still a crime.
yes, attempted murder, amd it wasn't murder.
Partial or attempted is part of the definition of genocide. You really should do your research before you start arguing on definitions.
Words don't mean what you want them to.
You don't know the meaning of genocide and probably confused it with mass extinction events which are totally different thing
That was probably the single post I've written on Lemmy that I would have deleted if the mod hadn't done it. But only because the language was confusing. I said something like "it's not at all certain that", which I meant literally, but obviously it reads like "I don't believe that", which is absolutely not what I meant.
Anyway, you don't care about any of that, or listening to anything that anyone would say if you feel they're not on your team (let alone assuming their good faith), what you care about is scoring points with your tribe, and being righteous, and dunking, and all the rest of the boring litany of social-media ills.
But I'm putting this correction out there anyway.
You could have left all of that out. You don't need to project insecurities onto other posters like that. It's not very constructive and will repulse anyone reading. That or it will only invite troll replies and no serious responses.
Which maybe is your goal, just saying personal attacks like that aren't going to make anyone want to engage with you even if they're in agreement with you on whatever topics.
Seems like that's entirely what they wanted
It wasn't me, but looking at your moderation log and the messages in question, I would have called it "islamophobia and downplaying neo-nazi crimes" and banned you just the same. Others are welcome to have a look at those messages and judge for themselves 🤷
Yeah their mod log is wild, and only amazing they haven't been banned from more.
I guess that's what they meant by stopping politics?
Getting banned for the on Feddit is quite an accomplishment they must have made it real bad
They can also look at the whole post I wrote to clarify what happened, which is linked.
Everyone is the hero in their own story, and sadly Islamophobia is widely spread with people that call themselves "liberals".
Pot, meet kettle.
Except that it wasn't me who banned them. I am just looking at the modlog and their own explanation of what happened.
I know you didn't ban them. But you're also considering yourself the hero in your own story when you go around Lemmy criticizing people of an extremely similar political viewpoint as yourself for not being left-wing enough and intimating that they are Islamophobic if they make any criticism of Muslims whatsoever. Seems like a self-defeating MO to me but what do I know.
Ironically, it's fairly similar to people who claim that any criticism of Israel is equivalent to anti-semitism. It's possible to criticize behaviors, groups, and/or cultures without being hateful towards them. Quite frankly, if you read Islamophobia from the two removed comments in the modlog, it says a lot more about you than OP.
This is a complete misrepresentation of what happened. Did you even read the messages they were banned for?
The full story is that the mod admitted banning me not for what I wrote but for what they thought I meant. That's just outrageous.
What I actually wrote was (1) a factual correction to some comment downplaying the scale of the jihadi terrorist problem a decade ago, and (2) the anodyne observation that we cannot just dismiss as illegitimate the concerns that voters have about the effects of immigration.
I don't know why you're so keen on sullying me, to the point of alleging that you've looked into this when you obvious haven't. I'll keep things civil and leave it there.
https://sh.itjust.works/modlog?userId=203917
The two comments at the bottom.
Edit: Okay, I see it was a whole thread and those were the only two comments that got removed for whatever reason. I still don't think I'm misrepresenting anything but I don't really care to argue about it.
Also, to add:
Information hygiene here is bad.
Every day, nearly every time I scroll the feed, some spicy headline goes past. When I go to look it up, it’s often completely made-up misinformation, or a warped ragebait headline, or a literally bot-written Tweet, yet it’s voted right to the front page.
…I thought Reddit refugees would be sick of this, and more careful/skeptical, but apparently not. I’ve even talked to some users who don’t understand the distinction between opinion columns and news.
And I had an argument with a mod, who had no problem with an LLM engagement farm Tweet as long as its “the right message.”
I think this is the thing that bothers me the most about Lemmy. I thought we all came here to get away from this intentionally misleading bullshit, but I guess not.
The political subreddits, especially the "politics" ones, are the absolute worst about this. Like, there is so, so, SO much real shit to get mad at about the current US administration, so why is most of what I see completely cherry-picked rage-bait bullshit??
Edit: Also, same as imaqtpie, I'm totally stealing "information hygeine" for calling out posts like that.
Yeah.
For a while, I came here with the attitude of “don’t block anything,” but the politics subs are just too much. It’s not that they post misinformation, but that it’s always at the absolute top of hot/new comments, drowning everything else out.
I was baffled when the other day a bot decided to show up in ![email protected] posting a very clearly vibe coded project that aggregated companies self made claims, which we all know is the best source! It currently sits on 300/15 vote ratio with comments being thankful for the "research" they have made. https://feddit.uk/post/52795270
The internet is either dead or im getting crazy. Like, what are we doing here? They are even getting upvotes on em dash riddled comments with paragraphs upon paragraphs of unimportant, irrelevant shit. Please wake the fuck up. This is so stupid and has me in loss for words. With how much people hate AI on here I thought they would at least knew how to spot one. Actually zero media literacy.
The message has been corrected 3 times already in response to user feedback and changed its whole style of handling corrections at least once - that is highly unusual (next to unheard of) behavior for a bot? Maybe someone ran the initial text through an AI for cleanup but that's a far cry from being a clanker themselves personally.
As for the project itself, I did not need to look all that deep to notice that it found several brands that were improperly labeled, at which point I can well understand people upvoting at least a partial solution as being better than nothing being done about the situation at all.
Its fairly normal actually. Projects like Open Claw can be let loose on the web and because of the openes of the fediverse they don't have many obstacles in doing so. I also do not believe there is no human at all behind it, but what ever triggers it does not check what the ouput of it is. There so much 0 information filler text and the common AI structure that I do not think it was just used as "cleanup".
I do not see much value in a partial solution if I do not know what is correct and I end up having to look it up myself anyways. Its just a waste of water. It might be a good list to start from but the information can never be trusted doesn't matter how much tokens you invest.
"I thought the behavior that they engaged in on the other site wouldn't happen here on the new site!"
shocked pikachu face
The people who left reddit to join Lemmy aren't representative of the average reddit user. They consisted of a fraction of a percent of the userbase and generally were the type to be calling out bad information hygiene. It might surprise you, but everyone who ever used reddit doesn't behave in the exact same way or value the same exact things. Tbh, I think the information hygiene was much better here shortly after the API exodus, and it has slowly degraded again over the past few years.
Btw I never heard information hygiene before but I'm going to keep using that, it's a great term.
It’s definitely been a term for some time. I don’t know who invented it, but I heard it elsewhere.
I love it too.
Yeah while Lemmy has been great for refugees from reddit. Lemmy's decentralized approach makes it very difficult to deal with bad faith actors.
More than a few extremely bad trolls/people that were banned from Reddit for very good reasons have infected Lemmy over the past few years.
I remember when I first got here, there's ALWAYS the innitial shock of "what IS this place???"
Once I figured out what this place was, I asked what I thought was an obvious queation.
"If people can interact with the same communities from different instances, wouldn't it be easy to just make a new account on a new instance? The name might be the same, but the instance is different, so it's a different account. And since anyone can host an instance, what's not to prevent someone from hosting hundreds or thousands of instances with the explicit intent on being malicious?"
When I asked that two years ago, I was told by several members that would never be an issue, since instance owners can defederate with instances.
Which I don't think solves the problem. It seems to me in a cat and mouse game here it's not the admins who hold the advantage. Seems like the troublemakers hold the advantage.
Because everything the admins have is reactionary. They can only ban after the troublemakers cause trouble. But then they're back in 10 seconds.
The admins aren't paid. The mods aren't paid. It seems to me if troublemakers wanted to shut everything down they would do it with a coordinated attack. Having thoussnds if not millions of bots all at once overrun the human mods.
Eventually the mods and admins would have no choice but to shut down. Too little resources to keep up with the work of running a popular instance.
And thats kind of what happened with lemm.ee. Not trolls per se, but a lack of resources. They ran out of money and resources to host an instance, and that's without the traffic of overwhelming trolls.
Yet when I said this, I was told I was wrong. Yet here we are. Now you have 1 troll who manually makes account and is banned. Makes account, gets banned. Makes account, banned again.
Thats ONE troll, who honestly seems like he's doing it for his own amusement rather than malicious intent.
What happens when there's a much larger concentrated troll attack?
The other reason that lemm.ee shut down was its intentional choice to open itself up to all-comers. Hexbear, Lemmygrad, incels for whom no means push forward harder, all are welcome come right in. Obviously it became too much for the mods to keep up so they quit, thereby leaving the task of moderation to their instance admins, who also subsequently quit, and therefore shut down the entire instance. You can correctly say that it was toxicity that killed that instance, but the other side to that is that they were the ones who opened themselves up to that choice.
As the subscriber numbers for the entire Threadiverse continue to fall (now at ~35k monthly active users, down from the post-Rexodus peak of ~55k), there may be some lessons in there for us all to learn from. I am not entirely certain but perhaps one is that while echo chambers are bad, the opposite of that (a cacophony of shit takes, like 4chan?) is exhausting and arguably equally bad, just for different reasons. It turns out that when nobody filters what you have to say in any way, a lot of what gets said under those conditions ends up being not worth hearing, objectively speaking (in the sense that people leave rather than stick around to hear it).
The only way I can think of to actually solve that problem is a whitelist, and that's a thousand times more work for unpaid moderators and will produce the echoiest of chambers
Though /all is more intended for discovery, not as a "frontpage", no? Subscribe to some interesting topics, block offensives?
Now that i think about it; yeah, "hygiene" is mostly left to you. But i think that's kinda expected of a emancipated(?, mündiger) person, the alternative being, the instance deciding what you should see. Also, there's a mechanism to hide bots? Voyager has it.
It still an attention drain for the whole Fediverse.
It’s zero sum: every eyeball on made-up garbage is a someone not engaging with authentic content. And from the looks of things, it’s draining a lot of attention.
It’s easy to say “just deal with it yourself,” and I do, but it’s still not good for the health of content I do see.
people don't think.
they react.
I think the tribalism, purity testing, and mod power tripping is far worse here than reddit. I was banned from memes.ml two days ago for pointing out it's in bad taste to celebrate the deaths of American soliders, and I totally don't support at all what Americans are doing in Iran or Palestine. After a couple back and forths I was banned for spam. I was responding to comments, explaining my position, not spamming. Then to top it off, I was banned from privacy.ml yesterday. I saw a user I was arguing with the previous day using an argument I taught them. I literally explained something to them in a DM, and they were using it correctly against someone else, and I was again banned for "spam." A single silly "I'm proud of you" comment. Granted it was obvious that they clearly didn't like me but still, you can't get caught doing that and not expect me to say something. Very immature.
What I find funny about it all is they're banning someone who's on their team. I'm on board with most of the stereotypical .ml ideology (I don't think we'd get along OP), but some users, and especially those with power, have no tolerance for any dissent. I don't even think I was dissenting, just saying the evil facist bootlicking troops probably aren't as evil as they want them to be, so don't cheer when they die. Is that really too much for some people?
you were critical of them. that makes you the enemy.
I completely agree, but it makes sense as smaller communities have much less incentive to actually tell users the rules
Not all communities are run the same way, nor do any intend to do so necessarily.
At a certain point some people are just trying to maintain a walled garden with curated content. Sometimes they can be real shit about it, too. It's not exactly suited for the Fediverse, but neither are broad, everything-goes communities or ones trying to appeal to 'everyone'.
I agree 100% with everything you're saying. Expectation of conformity and zero-tolerance of nonconformity form a sort of tyranny that always makes any discussion of locally accepted gospel impossible. Many social media communities seem founded on absolutist beliefs that just aren't up for discussion at all. Sometimes even asking informational questions out of genuine curiosity is treated as shilling or trolling - I suppose in those communities asking questions about doctrine any right-thinker should already know and accept is automatically suspect.
As a Hacker News-type person I never thought of my communication as Spock-like, but that's a great term!
It's comments like these that stop me from leaving. Thanks.
You're welcome! [also notice we both got douchevoted lol]
I'll swap my "Spock-like communication" for your "douchevoting" any day.
The douchevoting brigade is real. And I don't like it.
Why are the comments above downvoted? Because downvoters don't like OP. Not because of the comments. And that's stupid downvoting. But hei, they do they.
I was curious about the posts mentioned so I took a look at your history and can kinda see why. The Linux one didn't make too much sense to me but people were generally nice to you, although understandable skeptical since you're talking about hardware not working. Honestly you had a bit of a meltdown in that thread, which I think contributed more to the down votes than the initial opinion (like you said, text brings out a worse version of yourself).
The political ones, I mostly pieced together genecide denial (?) which has generally been very unpopular here. To be fair, that was more than a year ago, although what was unpopular then has aged even worse, what with people in Europe getting arrested for pro-Palastinian views and such.
I'm not saying the behavior of mods and such were justified, of course, just... y'know, two sides of the story. You're in the right to express your views and seek discussion, but others have an equal right to call you out on it-- especially if you get defensive and rude over polite, reasonable responses.
But that's just my two cents. I only ever comment, and I've had moments with people being rude or misunderstanding my intent. It happens, as social media is just that way.
Yeah the dude is trying to point it a "their problem", while he is trying to excuse a genocide. I don't know about the ban, but it's funny that these kinds of people always think they are somehow victims.
Even the ones agreeing and cheering with op are ones with the same circumstances. Mod log full of terrible comments and behaviors which they are here actively trying to diminish
Sure, that sounds mostly fair to me. Except on the silly genocide point, which is maybe revealing of something. Again, I do not have a personal opinion on it and never expressed one beyond refusing to endorse the progressive party line, which seems to have taken on the quality of a religious purity test.
Defensive, sure. But almost never rude. I've made a massive effort to avoid insults and mockery because I understand it's counterproductive. That is unlike very many of the people who I've had the temerity to contradict or disagree with on this platform. It sometimes feels like others often don't made that distinction (between testiness and outright insult), and take any contradiction of viewpoint as a licence to get personal. You seem to be fair-minded: If you looked more closely, I think you might see what I mean.
The general tone of your comments, i.e. generous but a bit mystified, suggests to me that you just happen to share the prevailing values and assumptions and opinions here. That will go a long way to getting you a good experience.
I think it would help to know in more detail what went down here. If we're talking about justifying, perhaps even unintentionally, genocide in either the sense of mass killing or mass removal by other means... I think it's pretty understandable that civility starts to go out the window a bit. Arguably the position itself is uncivil, whatever words are used to support it. When your start to talk about the right to exist or not, to not be killed or forcibly removed by a state... that's a life or death question and people will react that way. There are some issues there's no room for reasonable disagreement on.
That said, on wider issues, as someone firmly on the left, I do completely agree that the left can get kind of ridiculously emotionally invested and toxic over even minor disagreements from other leftists that absolutely don't meet the above threshold, even on questions as banal as pure strategy vs actual ideological disagreement. But it's hard to say if what you experienced was the latter and not you possibly being oblivious to your part in the former without more detail.
There's always room for reasonable disagreement when the issue in question is a word whose definition contains an element of intent and is therefore unfalsifiable.
This sounds to me that you would rather discuss semantics, than spend five minutes trying to actually falsify the term "genocide" when applied to Palestine [0] [1] [2]
These links alone are enough to prove intent from the defence ministry.
[0] https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/28/israels-defence-minister-says-large-scale-palestinian-migration-from-gaza-will-go-ahead

[2] https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/17/israeli-general-aharon-haliva-palestinians-7-october-gaza
When the pattern of behaviour gives very clear indication of intent, the denial of this indicates that either you're in favour of it, or don't think it's a bad thing.
When what folk see makes them feel sick to their stomach, such as a child being shot in the head, or families being shot in line for food due to a scarcity created by those making the people line up like animals, it's going to elicit a visceral response. I personally could not fathom how a human being with functioning empathy could be fine with that.
You've already stated you like discussing with people of privilege. That I'm alright, Jack attitude when it comes to life and death is pretty disturbing. What makes us feel is what makes us human.
I'd argue that this empathy is selective. Were you as exercised by the horrors that were inflicted by the other side in this particular conflict? What about the handful of conflicts in the world, for example Darfur, where the scale of suffering and atrocity is unarguably worse than anything happening in the Middle East? People seem to know inside-out the situation in Gaza and who's responsible and how terrible they are. Much less interest in, say, Myanmar, or even Iran, where the government seems to have inflicted years worth of Gaza's suffering in the space of just a few days six months ago. It's revealing.
This is whatabouttery. I care about Darfur, Myanmar, Tigray, etc. That doesn't take away from what is happening in Palestine.
You have yet to describe why any of those situations are worse than flattening schools, hospitals, collapse of healthcare, full blockade of food, medical supplies, water, people living in camps where disease is rampant.
How is Iran killing a number of civilians worse than killing civilians, starvation, disease, shooting babies in the head?
All your post is doing, is showing bias, and a lack of care about what is happening there. The problems is you cannot persuade someone to care about human suffering, and if you don't, why should I engage with you in a logical debate?
Your problem is, you don't care, and you want people to be fine with you being fine with children being shot in the head. You're on a left-leaning platform where people give a shit about their fellow man. People who give their time to work on open source generally have empathy as a core view.
Post your pro-Israel views on Xitter, or reddit and you'll get the validation you prefer. Its an echo chamber close to yoir political persuasion. You enter a place that think differently and prepare to be challenged. Ultimately, if you want to be an empathetic human being, prepare to be wrong. Can you handle that? Your bio suggests you won't engage if downvoted. I've not down voted you, but I'll tell you you're wrong. I say you're wrong because I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and I'm assuming you're not evil.
Ya man this is a bad faith discussion. I can understand why you got banned.
whataboutism is just marginally better than personal insults and arguablY more counter productive.
This discussion isn't about empathy, it's about genocide. Changing the topic to a different, irrelevant subject as an attempt to deflect, distract, or disengage with a thought is something known as whataboutism.
As an example, let's say the answer to all of your questions is "yes." Does that change the fact that a genocide is happening in Palestine? No, it does not.
Now let's pretend the answer to all of your questions is "no." Does that change the fact that a genocide is happening in Palestine? No, it does not.
If you think the left is not politically educated enough, the solution to that problem is reading books and sharing knowledge and educating your peers, not engaging in the very same purity tests that you find so problematic.
I can't respond to such a circumspect answer.
I can only answer generally that there still sometimes not room for reasonable disagreement where intent is involved. Courts absolutely do prove intent for some crimes beyond a reasonable doubt... someone could still disagree, but by definition it isn't necessarily a reasonable disagreement.
Murder (vs manslaughter) in most jurisdictions is a question of intent. We prove it to the point of no reasonable disagreement all the time. That's the very standard we use.
Sure, I get that. On this particular question, it seems clear to me that no such "beyond reasonable doubt" exists.
Categorically, as you claimed before? Why not? If we can prove intent of an individual action beyond reasonable doubt, why not an action by an organization of people?
Or are you now acknowledging intent can be proven beyond reasonable doubt but that it hasn't been in the case you were banned for arguing it?
The second. Anything that is technically unfalsifiable can be "proven" beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law, I understand that. Anyway, I find this subject stultifyingly boring, I don't have anything else to say on it.
Tldr OP is a racist Zionist European and therefore has to stick to birding
And this is based on.... What exactly? Asking because you're not the first person on Lemmy to draw such an extreme conclusion based on reading a single phrase you disagree with.
Conclusions like yours are the reason people Fight so much on social media. Granted, I'm not immune to this, I got to do better, i urge you to do the same.
Patience, reason ate virtues
Scroll down a bit in the thread if you need more examples
Probably the OPs comment history is my guess.
Not who you're commenting to, but for me it's based on wasting/spending the time to read not only OP's analysis about the Fediverse, but then looking into their comment history and public modlogs for their 'perfectly polite' takes that got them banned.
Which is far more than basing a conclusion on a single phrase.
People wearing the skin of decency usually gives reason for people to fight on social media. And sometimes people do the research so others don't have to.
So a good time apart from the usual cestpools of life: political and news communities.
Great post. I'm frequently reminded that 40k people is so much more than it seems as I consistently encounter users who have been here and quite active for 3 years and yet I don't recognize them.
That ban from c/Europe is a badge of honor in my book. One of the nice things about the modlog is that anyone can quickly verify whether bans or comment removals are justified according to their own perspective. It shouldn't always be as necessary as it currently is, but with people on Lemmy constantly throwing around accusations of bigotry, nazism, genocide denial, etc, its quite useful to be able to quickly view a user's moderation history. Honestly that might be the most useful feature that Lemmy has, aside from the ability to federate.
However, I do have one minor quibble with your post.
To ascribe your banning from a European community on a European server because of an opinion on a European situation to the US left is quite unreasonable. Also, the mod who banned you appears to be German. This is one of my pet peeves about Lemmy, that Americans always seem to take collateral damage in the most random threads lol. The Lemmy user base is significantly more international than the reddit user base in my experience, and thus the anti-American attitudes that seem quite common outside of the US are frequently exhibited here.
I don't know that there's anything that can be done about it, but I do know that it's unproductive to blame Americans from the outside looking in. I mean it's unproductive to blame average people for the actions of their government anyway, but it's especially annoying coming from people who don't even live here and often lack a lot of context and empathy with their angry rants. None of this applies to you personally btw, but I'm just saying it for the record.
Not really. Most of the time it's like "So-n-so got banned Reason: "
So you click the context to see whats happened, and the thread is deleted. So you can't even see what was said. You only see the topic title.
Or if the whole thread isn't deleted, you just see "Comment deleted by mod".
But if the comment was removed, it usually has the transcribed comment directly above the ban reason in the modlog.
However, you are right that the modlog is still very limited and could be much more functional. There are ways to remove posts and comments without them appearing in the modlog, usually by banning the account entirely with the content removal box checked. Then it will show the ban, but all of the removed content is simply gone. It's a thorny problem to solve to be fair, because people have also used the modlog in an abusive manner, so it's kinda important to have the ability to actually nuke really bad stuff without it reappearing in the modlog.
Also if you try simply scrolling through the modlog it's obvious that a bunch of stuff is randomly omitted and completely unclear why. It's only really useful to check the histories of specific users or mods, because you can sort that way and everything for that particular user seems to come up properly.
Banned: Rule 1
While I agree and even want the ban but yes.
I guess you know but that is infamously what Lemmy.ml constantly says upon removing people from communities that they've never even so much as heard of, for obscure reasons that seem to have little to nothing to do with Rule 1 to the person receiving the instance ban.
Pushback accepted. You're absolutely right, in the main case I mentioned the community was (technically) German and the mod was German.
Alas, there were a bunch of other incidents on other communities that left a really bad taste in my mouth and in the end convinced me to avoid literally anything even slightly politics-adjacent on Lemmy. To be clear: I have totally mainstream political views, I don't regret anything I wrote anywhere (I would have deleted it otherwise). Anyone is free to look it up and argue back if they (or I) can be bothered, but we all know that this is unlikely to be productive (to put it politely). The de-facto impossibility of genuine debate on anything even slightly controversial does feel like a serious failing of social media. Discovering all this up close has unfortunately been a part of my experience here.
Yes, and it's not like the US far left isn't extremely intolerant, that's absolutely a true statement. But I feel similarly in terms of how I try to use Lemmy. It's hard to gauge how much of the toxicity around political topics is exclusive to the Lemmy userbase, and how much is just an unavoidable failure of social media in general. Our specific flavor of extreme left wing toxicity is pretty shocking when you first encounter it, but it's really no different than the more mainstream types of political toxicity you would encounter on reddit. Instead of worshiping Trump they worship Xi and Putin, but the unwarranted aggressiveness and complete detachment from reality is similar.
It does have a bit of a echochamber (defederation and moderation) problem, i agree. We should look out for that.
echochambers are what people want.
i'm not sure how you fix that 'problem'. you can't force folks to interact with those who are different than them without them becoming resentful and angry that differences exist, and inevitable demonizing people for those differences.
Not what I want, I want people to debate ideas with who argue back.
If I wanted non stop validation I'd chat with an LLM.
It would be great to have opt-in choices to either enter or not be forced into entering such spaces. Like I do not wish that e.g. ChapoTrapHouse did not exist, I only wish that proper labels would be more readily visible so that people would not stumble into them unawares. Likewise, Lemmy.ml's disallowance of criticism of Russia, China, or North Korea is not exactly easily read from the instance sidebar, nor is that sidebar readily visible from most 3rd-party apps that I have seen - especially when browsing by All, which how else would someone even browse, especially when new and haven't subscribed to much yet?
So agreed that labeling would solve most of the issues. But if e.g. Lemmy.ml refuses to allow any criticism of Russia, China, or North Korea, then at least someone would be aware that it has chosen to be an echo chamber in that manner (while others choose to be echo chambers in different ways - e.g. PieFed chooses to restrict votes to a daily quota rather than topic-based, which is just a different style of filtering).
Haha. I used Lemmy.ml for a little while, and I noticed that it had a lot of pro-China posts and tankies, to the point that I found it likely to be state-sponsored propaganda. It's reassuring to hear that someone else noticed the bias.
Oh this is an extremely well-known and documented effect, although as you can see you will receive a significant number of downvotes whenever you state it publicly. See e.g. https://lemmy.world/post/29072279 and the community that it is posted in for FAR more details than you ever wanted to know about that instance. TLDR: as you saw with your own eyes, they are actively rooting for the downfall of all Western civilizations, and if that comes at the cost of millions of the lives of people currently living in them, so much the better - they "deserve it", bc they did not stop capitalism single-handedly, or something. Crucially, Russia, China, and North Korea does not ever do anything wrong though, certainly not genocide or like "invading" other countries or anything like that (hey, in fact, don't you know that UkRaInE iNvAdEd RuSsIa, not the other way around?!?).
This btw is why many people are refusing to donate to fund Lemmy.ml, and by extension further development of the Lemmy codebase, since the main developer Dessalines refuses to separate donated funds to only go to the latter without also being used to moderate and maintain the highly problematic Lemmy.ml instance.
And the pace of development of Lemmy is already glacially slow... PieFed's is significantly faster, but like the Lemmy devs, its main dev is likewise quite opinionated and bakes that into the codebase in a number of ways. So they both have their advantages and disadvantages, but either way Lemmy.ml itself looks to me like pure disadvantage.
problematic communities like that are never going to label themselves as problematic.
they also don't see themselves that way. They think they are bastions of truth and free speech and open-mindedness, it's just that everyone else is wrong and close minded.
every echo chamber, and hate community, and cult-like group thinks like this. abusive sex cults don't go 'hey we are an abusive sex cult who will destroy your identity and steal all your money, come join us!'
And that mismatch between the claim and reality is what will - if anything does - doom the entire Threadiverse to irrelevance. It's understandable that inside the echo chamber they refuse to see what is plain, but what is far less fine is when everyone else simply goes along with it, with zero pushback.
Lemmy is a
Nazitankie bar (for anyone who does not know, see Paradox of Intolerance). The lack of moderation is why whenever Lemmy gets brought to in outside mentions, it is as the butt of a joke and laughed at (I've seen it treated such in Reddit, X, Bluesky, Tildes, etc.).Here is a perfect example: https://www.reddit.com/r/fossdroid/comments/1uiywal/should_we_switch_to_lemmy/. An entire community was deciding whether to move here or no, and the majority of the top comments are basically just "lolz no fucking way". A few examples:
To be fair, some of these issues are older now - like PieFed has basically solved the onboarding issue, and db0 solved the CP spam one from years back, though such events tend to stick around in people's memories... and I cannot honestly state that the lack of moderation has gotten any better. MAYBE will the upcoming release of Lemmy v1.0??? Though I exceedingly doubt that, especially after seeing what happened to Lemm.ee.
Also tbf, people did recommend Beehaw and mander.xyz as sensible choices. The former was more or less soundly rejected by bringing up its defederation status from lemmy.world, cutting it off from the majority of the Threadiverse communities (although the ones locally on it i think are quite nice - I've never had a negative interaction with any of them), and the point that a single cadre of super-mods controls the entirety of what is allowed to be said on it, which is what they would be wanting to get away from by leaving Reddit. Browsing locally on mander.xyz though... that just might work!? But only if you are exclusively interested in STEM and basically nothing else.
Being a tankie bar is our choice, but others refuse to enter into that journey alongside us. So long as we entertain the most toxic among us, refusing to distinguish them in any way from anyone else, mainstream normies are going to refuse to put in the enormous amount of effort required to do that work for themselves, and so will simply stay on Reddit or move to corporate solutions (like Bluesky) that do not shirk from doing so, rather than enjoy the Fediverse where they would be free but that also requires the high amount of effort that comes with that.
I love reactionaries self selecting themselves from coming here, personally.
The solution is quite simple, really. Mods (or anyone else for that matter) should not be able to ban people. The concept of global banning shouldn't exist. If an account posts/comments stuff you like, then just block it on a personal level. Global banning (especially when the decision can only be done by the mods / a select few people) will always lead to echo chambers.
Then a few accounts could spam every community with nazi shit or child porn (hidden from users who blocked them), so any newly registered users would leave the second they joined.
Would this really happen, tho? Also you could give a prompt to new users on this issue and tell them how they can subsequently block those accounts. Sure, there are always pros and cons to doing things, but in my experience the current approach where you give a select few people total control always results in total echochambers. Which I believe on the broader scale just reinforces the political divide of a society.
I mean, having to deal with the torrent of that type of content was a big reason why the admin of lemm.ee quit altogether, so I would wager it happens quite a bit.
Edit: This content is also quite explicitly illegal in many jurisdictions, and hosting it on your instance can get you landed in jail.
yes, it does frequently. you're naive if you think there are highly abusive actors in every online space like this.
determined folks with negative agendas also have a lot more resources and energy to put into harassment and spamming, than any ordinary person does. they are also often well-financed and emotionally driven.
Ironically, PieFed has allowed such things for something like a year already - e.g. with keyword filters someone who does not want to view content involving "Trump" or "Musk" can avoid it on a personal level, without requiring a mod to make that decision for everyone.
Likewise, for all the flak it has received, the "reputation" visual indicators put additional power into the hands of end-users to decide how they best would like to interact with others on the platform.
Another one, back to actual filters again, is an automated collapsing or even filtering of comments below a certain score threshold. I always turned those off, but for those who want them they are neat to have - not every moment of every day does every person need to be ready to read such content, sometimes people just want a break from anything controversial and to enjoy a pleasant read?
Lemmy is glacially slow to add new features so I wouldn't hold my breath for these anytime soon, but FYI, they do already exist elsewhere.
This never works
ughhh why do libertarians think they are the first babies to use their brain in the most basic way possible?
I am so tired of this lazy narrative, the obvious truth here is CENTRALIZED SPACES ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE ECHO CHAMBER EFFECT.
Yes it is still a problem here of course but the diversity here mitigates not worsens that issue.
If you are going to disagree with me prove it with data and facts I don't care about your anecdotally derived feelings about it.
Echo Chambers literally require large monolithic enclosed spaces to echo, a series of isolated smaller foam cells form materials with sound deadening properties so not only is the intuition/metaphor wrong here it is 180 degrees wrong.
https://www.thevitagroup.com/en/vita-blog/how-does-soundproofing-foam-work/
The structure most prone to the Echo Effect is a Cathedral not a dense network of semi-isolated smaller spaces. Every time we discuss "Echo Chambers" without recognizing this it dumbs the conversation down further.
How does Lemmy.zip have an echo chamber / defederation issue?
If it does, this is the first I am hearing about it, and I find it of great interest.
If not though, then why does it bother you that other people may have made a different choice than what your instance has done?
Uhm, more generally, not only lemmy.zip. Most of lemmy is more left-leaning + tech, while more conservatives might feel more welcome with the (defederated) tankies. This can be a problem, with fueling extreme views.
Most of Lemmy is also white and male in addition to being left-leaning and tech focused. We really could use more diversity across the board here.
There are no ads here, and no corporate Algorithm to contend with, plus everything is entirely freely offered. If we were more welcoming to mainstream normal folks, people would be outright flocking here.
In fact, people have checked us out and even made accounts, but at least half the people that came here have since left, often self-reportedly after remaining here for at least one or multiple years. We are driving them away in droves. Possibly we do not (collectively) want them here.
What we "need" (in order to survive) vs. what will actually be done are entirely separate matters.
Everyone who isn't white and male, you mean?
Thank you for clarifying, no I actually meant non-technical folks who don't spend as much time in introspection, as opposed to e.g. creating things. An example could be a comics artist, or a craftsperson, let's say working with wood, who gets confused by all the technical hurdles needing to be overcome in order to join the Threadiverse. We (who use Linux btw) thought virtually nothing of any of that, even finding it fascinating how and why the entire Fediverse is able to function as it does, but they tend to feel daunted at such and turn away rather than engage.
I felt the need to clarify since you chose my comment about needing more diversity of people with a quip about not wanting mainstream, normal folks.
It was the rampant sexism that initially turned me away from the fediverse. I think I tried two or three times before I found my groove and the communities that speak to me.
It's not that confusing to use the Threadiverse and I think it's a little snobbish of you to think crafts people shouldn't be welcome if they get confused by some of the tech stuff here. I have never used Linux and can function fine on this site. You're underestimating people.
Whenever I see the leftist/liberal infighting and purity tests, like the ones in your comments, im always reminded of a quote from the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley:
"The revolution turns against itself, because its the only thing its strong enough to beat. You can't get any group of more than four people without at least one fucking idiot."
Thanks for your contributions to an open internet. Birding is one of the better communities on lemmy (im a fan of the_pack myself, because I ride a motorcycle and im uncultured i guess :) )
It look at lot of community blocking and leftist super-user blocking to make Lemmy palatable. And even then, you still end up with like the "football" community and all the top posts are about Palestine, Israel, Donald Trump, America bad, like jeez people can you turn it off for five seconds and talk about soccer. Its a bit like the Fox News comment section where you'll have some innocuous article and half the comments are about Crooked Hillary. But there's some good stuff on Lemmy you just have to work for it.
People for millennia have been socializing via text on paper and found it extremely easy. Text on a screen is hardly that much different. I think the modern problems society has communicating via text has more to do with the wetware than the software. I imagine a moral panic also exploded 5000 years ago when writing letters became a thing.
I'm eagerly looking forward to more silly, niche communities. Communities like /c/[email protected] & /c/[email protected] are wonderful examples of people providing genuinely human and silly fun content. It shows there's an actual community, not just nerds advocating for Linux.
I do find a few things annoying about the federation system, like opening links directly to lemmy.world on my desktop an having to surgically recreate the link on my instance if I want to interact with it at all. I figure it's part of the growing pains and we will find interesting ways to solve it.
Still, I feel so much better using this platform. I feel like contributing isn't just padding the Reddit admin's pockets and being used to fuel AI models. Y'all are a much more chill group anyway. I'll keep posting my food here.
The !communityname@instancename format works better, it's more universal to other platforms/apps. ![email protected] and ![email protected]
You can copy paste the URL into you instance's search box.
But I do think we also need this feature https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/2318
Since I use my phone for Lemmy 100% of the time I sometimes forget what a massive issue this is. A feature like that strikes me as critical.
you should comment on my Github feature request to bump it lol
Fwiw, PieFed has had it for many months. It is not uncommon to wait for a feature for >5 years in Lemmy (like moderator reports federating between instances) so if it is truly "critical" for you, there is a way to get it right this instant. I don't know of any PieFed instances in Sweden but there are some nearby.
I'm happy with my instance, with my admins and with my /local feed. And with Lemmy at large. It is not a feature that's critical for me (I am unaffected as I only use my phone for Lemmy anyway).
But thank you anyway!
Yes and having a /local feed might be even more critical for someone in a similar situation as you also! I am glad you have found a solution that works well for you:-).
I agree about universal links, but I'd also highly recommend Lemmy Universal Link Switcher plugin. There is also a similar one for Mastodon.
Yeah. Federated social media is even more prone to this effect than centralized. This is the single reason why I believe Lemmy can't possibly become anything meaningful on a global scale. It is a purgatory built in the image of long dead websites where we all wait for the rotting corpses of old media to wither away.
Sadly, a conclusion I'm leaning towards as well. In theory this system should allow an even greater mixing of ideas than Reddit and its ilk, there's no central authority determining which subjects are forbidden. But it seems we just do that to ourselves anyway, and since each instance and each community are so much smaller than Reddit it's much more effective. The same "single giant impersonal central authority" thing that's a downside of Reddit also means that it's easier to seamlessly encounter everything that is allowed under it.
I don't really know how to fix this since it seems like most people literally want it to be this way. We don't like having our views challenged, it's comforting to look around and see that everyone agree with you.
I will add that challenging someone's viewpoint respectfully is quite a different thing from a lot of what goes on in this social media environment.
True, and personally I find it a bit of a mystery. The norm for a "discussion" is a thread stuffed with "me too" comments where everyone agrees with each other. What are people getting out of this intellectually? In practice it seems that many people are not using social media to exchange ideas at all, they're doing it mainly to affirm their membership of this or that tribe.
I would agree but I'm starting to think that that would make me part of the problem. So maybe I should insult your fashion sense instead? Argue that leopards are better than jaguars? As I said, not sure how to fix this.
The irony is definitely there. Here we are patting each other on the back for being in the elite tribe of those who understand the dynamics of social media and are able to rise above it all. You could now post a bad joke and I'd have to try hard not to upvote it.
Lemmy seems structurally much better for this, as different instances can independently prune their list without needing one true culture to grow. If people want their social media to be a clubhouse rather than a gladiatorial arena, that's fine. Go find the spaces that accommodate your preferences. Lemmy supports it.
But what about the problem of trolls just continuing to create new instances to circumvent bans and defederation? Is there really a solution to this beyond hoping we don't reach a critical mass where this becomes a real problem?
In my experience most trolls just do low effort trolling, so simple interventions can quash a lot. While some people do get so into social media they make multiple alts for ban evasion, it's much easier for mods to ban an account than for the troll to make it so after a few cycles they'll just get tired of it.
And if there's an instance so open that people can automate account creation so that trolling is just as easy it'll probably get defederated.
That seems to be just hoping for no critical mass though. If it ever grows large enough, you'll definitely get people willing to put the time in to disrupt things for their own entertainment.
My experience of trolls getting bored was from Reddit. It's so easy to ban them and filter out fresh accounts that practically no equation of troll vs. moderator effort would ever be anything but a waste for the troll. There was one guy who set calendar reminders to flame us in modmail every 90 days or whatever when the longest mute expired and it was just amusing. He set up all this infrastructure and typed out a big flame message and we just hit a single button.
Only truly automated trolling would be meaningful, and that requires a home instance that doesn't put in restrictions or hurdles in account creation. Which will quickly become obvious as an attack vector and then defederated. And federation of new instances can be restricted so they don't get to just unleash hell. I'd be more worried about actual DDOSes than a troll storm.
I'm sure there are fake accounts flying under the radar here now, and they're a big problem on Reddit, but trolling is easy to manage.
I'm mostly here to argue about politics with people who aren't conservatives or libertarians - just like you, I think engaging with different opinions is healthy, and I've had a hard time finding leftists to argue with elsewhere.
Now that is a genuinely interesting comment! I assume you have a thicker-than-average skin. But how do you go about not getting banned? My literally centrist views got me insulted and mocked to oblivion, and banned in two communities. It was so tiring.
Lemmy is ostensibly leftist, so purity beatings will continue
until morale improvesalways, it just goes with the territory. The Left always eats its own (the Right too, though they typically wait until they are in power first, instead of right out of the gate). Also, YSK that tankies aren't actually "leftist" - just bc they call themselves that does not make it true.
If you don't think left-wingers can be authoritarian, isn't that just a no true Scotsman fallacy? You don't like the idea that people could genuinely be in favour of socialism, against the wealthy, etc, and also happy to murder people in the street and put kids in camps to make it happen.
Which, by the way, it is definitely okay to be against that. I'm just saying that "authoritarian left-wing" is a real thing.
I mean, if it looks/sounds/smells/walks like fascism, then at some point we should start to wonder if it is fascism? Even/especially when people who notoriously do not tell the truth and are extremely well-known for hiding their true intentions say otherwise.
I am less interested in political theorizing, and more whether I will be grabbed off the street and sent to a concentration camp (personally).
After all, you know what the Bible says: fuck the poors, let them eat
cakeeasily-prevented diseases and die, no need for justice or mercy, just lower taxation on the wealthy and it's all good bro, just trust me.Or perhaps we could be skeptical and not simply do things because people attach a label next to them that we like. Anyway I am not stopping you from moving to North Korea if you like, where everything is wonderful, in theory.
Fascism and authoritarian communism are different things. Fascism is built on and relies on expansion through war, whereas authoritarian communism can survive without that.
Fascism is built on the idea of purity and strength, and the pollution of the blood of the pure race by dirty foreign influence. Fascist rhetoric holds the Leader as the ultimate ideal, the perfect man to emulate and sacrifice yourself for, whereas authoritarian communism upholds the ideal of the Party or the Revolution.
This is not nitpicking, this is important, because of that expansionism and reliance on an enemy I talked about. Fascist nations must be at war, it is part of their support structure, they cannot survive without a war to fight. Their society is built to support the military. You cannot make peace with a fascist nation. They will always attack you. Also, their obsession with purity means they purge their ranks of anyone not considered racially pure, or male, which is a big disadvantage compared to communism.
Authoritarian communism can survive by focussing on conversion of their society into the communal ideal of a Marxist system, and their security structures are all built around that. Thinking correctly, not believing in capitalism, being educated in socialist modes of work, etc. Education is emphasised, with a strong bias towards one correct way of thinking, to make you a perfect worker, no matter who you are or where you came from.
When authoritarian communists purge, it's usually not for race, or sex, it's for your beliefs and ideals or your class loyalty.
Learning how to recognise different kinds of danger is important, because it lets you make the right choices to survive.
Now explain why tankies seem to be extremely fond of current Russia, even though it makes no attempt to hide its rightwing authoritarian nature. "Geopolitics"/"enemy of my enemy" can only explain so much of that IMO.
I have never seen any evidence of the assertion that tankies, ie fans of communist China and the old Soviet Union, are fond of Russia today. Can you point me to some evidence of this? I would love to see it, because it would obviously make no sense.
You seem to be speaking sincerely, yet while entirely missing my points. I was not speaking against communism, I was speaking against "communism" in name only, while actually being fascism in disguise. For example, if you think about it, doesn't almost everything you say work well as a description about Putin and modern Russia, both of which many call "communist" (despite being ostensibly a "democracy", while in reality a totalitarian regime, and definitely capitalist rather than "socialist")?
This idea that the likes of Russia, China, and North Korea are simply going through a fascism phase after which they will eventually emerge into being ideologically pure seems the height of naïveté to me. Never once in the entire history of the world has that ever worked out in practice, and there is no proof that it ever will. However, this idea that in the meantime all other forms of government must be converted into your theoretical ideal, despite going against all logic and history, THAT style of thinking is going to LITERALLY get me ACTUALLY killed irl.
Some modes of thinking are actually genocidal in their outcomes - and yes I know the counterargument is that "it'll be worth it later, just trust me bro", but as I said I do not believe that.
Anyway, this is not a politics community and thinking ahead to how my death can better serve someone else's theoretical ideological agenda is somewhat triggering to me for some reason, so let's not go any further into this tangent. I've had this identical discussion over and over before and it never seems to solve anything at all ever.
I want to disengage here, but I hope you will continue to think about the points I raised. Fwiw, I promise you I've put literally decades of thought into your points already.
I think perhaps we are arguing past each other. Clearly you and I have different definitions of fascism. If you don't want to discuss it any more, that is perfectly fine, of course. I certainly apologise for my sloppy attempt to define what makes fascism different, I did not even look up the various authoritative sources, like Hannah Arendt.
I agree that it's not just a theoretical game. It's a very real distinction that effects billions of people. If China had been a fascist government after the Soviet split, say, we might have had World War 3 long ago.
The same might apply if the USA was always a fascist state, as so many on the left assert. I think it might be soon, and it has always shared some characteristics, as Arendt pointed out.
But it isn't one yet.
Russia obviously isn't communist, as you say.
It's a dictatorship of the managed democracy variety, a corrupted shell. Right-wing, with fascist elements as part of the coalition, but Putin is not a Fuhrer, even though the cult of personality is well-established.
You raise a thought about North Korea, though. If the popular conception of the place is correct, it does share a lot of the aspects I mentioned as being fascistic.
Clearly I need to sharpen up my definitions and knowledge again before being a useful partner for discussion. Thank you for your patience and your replies.
Hehe, I'm pretty sure I'm banned in at least one community as well, not sure how to check. I rarely visit communities and in stead just react off posts in my feed.
But you must be subscribed to some? I'm guessing nobody much visits them one by one, it's single feed all the way. I just checked and, yep, a ban is also an unsubscription, so you won't be informed but the posts will just stop coming.
I see you've posted to [email protected]. I'm still pretty pissed about what happened there. On one hand I tell myself they're not worth my time if they're going to treat any tiny ideological micro-dissent with such ferocity (again: I'm a frigging centrist). On the other, they're clearly still the best Europe community on Lemmy, unfortunately for me. That community was literally the reason I signed up in the first place.
I'm not saying this is the case in your case at all, but depending on the issue this isn't always an ironclad defense. We certainly have historical examples of political centrists aligning with very extreme ideologies in an attempt to cling to power.
And just logically, some issues don't have a valid centrist position. There's no valid centrist position between a flat earther and one who believes the earth is a planet in space. For example, in a science community, I would expect people pushing flat earth to possibly get banned and could see the logic in someone trying to find a middle between those two positions getting the same treatment. Just because there are two sides to an issue doesn't make a moderate position between them reasonable or defensible. Sometimes one side is just wrong.
I think the merits of the situation are more important than affiliation.
Do you not think this is what a flat-earther (or climate denier) would say? Before they shower you with factoids ("the merits of the situation") that "prove" their point? On the contrary, I think that affiliation can be very important in such cases, because science works on the basis of consensus. If you disagree with the herd, then you should expect to have an uphill struggle.
In any case, here we're talking pure politics, i.e. questions where the responses are conditioned by people's personal values, and which (theoretically) are open to debate.
But just because they say it doesn't make it a valid argument in their case.
My point here was just categorically being a centrist doesn't necessarily make the position reasonable enough that it should be tolerated. If you're a centrist between a reasonable position and an unreasonable one, you might still be being unreasonable. It really depends on the specific issue. That's really all my point was.
Sure, I understood your point. My point was that you are inadvertently making the same claim as the flat-earthers: "Don't worry about that boring scientific consensus, this specific issue is different". In science, there's absolutely a value in tribalism, i.e. respecting consensus (being a woolly "centrist") when one does not have expertise.
But again, my positions were not scientific but political. Here everyone can have their opinion about what's "reasonable" or not.
Well, I checked it now, and found a thread about immigration with some fairly centrist takes ( https://b.piefed.social/inbox/posts/https%3A%2F%2Fjlai.lu%2Fpost%2F41340213 ) so maybe your position isn't the issue?
As I remember it, the community I was banned from was one that claimed to be for a united left, but where they kept posting memes about how voting is stupid. Eventually, I had enough and posted that it's as if they're working for the Republicans, which I'll admit was not very constructive, and that got me banned. Not something I agree with, and I doubt they'd be as strict with someone who posted in disagreement with me, but that's hard to know :l
Indeed. [email protected] seems relatively uncaptured by ideology, but still, I basically got banned for wrongthink rather than for breaking any actual rules. Last time I checked, the particular mod seemed to have gone away, but I can't be bothered begging to let back in.
That's very diplomatic and generous.
You can always just use an alt. Fortunately I haven't been banned from any communities I really enjoy, but I've always had several alts on standby in case that were to happen.
To me that feels like too much of a concession to the abusive mod. If they don't want me in their community, fine, I will respect that. In the case of [email protected], I can see the quality of the contributions. I know that mine would have raised the level. It's their loss. And Lemmy's, unfortunately.
You could make your own Europe community with blackjack and hookers 🤷
Insulted and mocked is par for the course in political discussions. Banning too, although it's annoying when that's overused. Perhaps you should set up a centrist instance specifically for political discussion, and not ban anyone unless they spam?
But why should we accept that insults and mockery are par for the course? That's my problem. Federated social media is no better (or hardly any better) than other social media on this point. Starting your own community of people you already agree with - to me that seems to totally defeat the point of political discussion. In democracy we should be able to talk civilly to people we don't agree with. Done properly, it's also more interesting.
True. I concede that it's far better without insults and mockery. Although none at all is also bad. Gotta be balanced and flexible. If you become hypersensitive to even mild insults and mockery, discussion becomes very sterile. Risk-free. Constrained. Frustrating.
Usually the answer is a bunch of very hard-working mods with the right idea, a sense of humour, a desire to be fair, and the ability to be decisive. Takes a lot.
My account on Fedia got permabanned. Don't even know why. No explanation given, just "account banned" when trying to login XD. I suspect I might've gotten caught in fight against bots spamming, but there's no way to appeal.
Thank you for contributing and for this introspective analysis, but thank you most of all for writing it yourself and not using a random word generator to do it for you. It’s a rare treat to read human prose these days.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Lemmy is a total echo chamber, so I was smiling when you said "it's not immune to it". That's the understatement of the year award. :)
Upvotes make sure that popular opinions are at the top and people even report opinions they dont like to moderators here. Lol.
At least I'm on a good instance with a sane owner, but Jesus Christ, this place can be ridiculous. I've been told I'm a troll for disagreeing with the majority many, many times.
Not vaccinering against covid used to upset almost everyone, and it probably still does.
??
I have sorting set to "newest".
Yeah its a good choice to not get influenced by voting.
What i wanted to say: sorting is up to you.
But maybe the default should not be set to votes.
I think its different defaults in different mobile apps, yeah.
And instance websites? I have no experience with them, is this not a (federated) profile setting?
Not federated and it doesn't need to be since you use the same instance all the time. It's the content that is federated to your instance and you just view it on your instance.
My post is stuffed with strategic understatement. I wanted people to take it seriously so I had to try not to lose them.
my favorite was being banned for being both anti-gaza and anti-israeli, in the same thread.
Would love to see that to see context and the comments in question
Cause this thread seems to be you're very antisemitic and don't give a shit about the Palestinians
https://lemmy.zip/post/58290305/24384479
At very least using nazi dog whistles
you got me bro. i'm just a Big Zionist Nazi who wants to kill everyone everywhere all the time.
i hope you feel very important and special now, for all your hard investigative work, exposing me for the horrid piece of shit human being. i bet that little thrill you got up your spine for 'exposing' me was very yummy for you.
instead of like you know, acknowledging the hard fact that AIPAC is spends a fuckload of money buying off US politicians... to get them to vote for weapons packages.... nah that can't be real. it's that i'm a nazi who hates jews, but also i love israeli and hate palestians. we can't be looking at facts because facts are thinks that nazis and jew haters and palestian haters would look at. we can't do that. we can't make statements based on the facts of the political situation, no sir.
hey, did you know i don't use pronouns on my lemmy profile and that means i also hate an want to kill trans people! yeah! that's how all of this works. anyone who isn't on your side and goosesteps the way you think you should goosestep, is your enemy.
There is a lot of truth to what you are saying here. Lemmy users are very quick to categorize other users into extreme categories, such as nazi or fascist, based on a few comments they make.
How many actual nazi or fascists do we have that are Lemmy users? Can't be many.
the legit facists and nazis don't exist in public accessible spaces. if you follow any legit reporting you know they recruit in like discord, but the have their own tech spaces out of the public eye. sadly they are often far smarter and far more tech savvy than the leftists that claim to oppose them, at least the dummies here who claim that.
ProPublica and other sources tell these stories, but they're written at a grade-level that the labeling lemmites can't understand, because it's legit reporting instead of sensationalism.
You might also notice that basically no legit hard hitting news sources ever get posted here... but all the shitty rage bait leading headlines do... because any these fools probably thing FrontLine and ProPublica are Zionist or something, despite them having some of the best reporting on the issues they claim to care about.
It is cool at least to see there are smart and reasonable folks here, and sometimes there are super cool threads full of them where the dummies don't even show up because the reading level of the comments is too sophisticated for them.
Tyty for proving the point!
you're welcome.
now leave me alone and let me keep being a zionist nazi who wants to destroy all of society by citing wikipedia articles and statistics.
So that was why you were banned and comments removed?...
Oh no, the bigoted sack of shite is upset!
Write another book about it if you want, but no, you can't play with the leftists. Also getting banned from feddit for being too liberal is HILARIOUS.
Banned for a day. Next time is a perma.
Get ratioed AND go fuck yourself.
Unfortunately there's loads of reddit style interactions on here. But at a structural level, it's successfully set up differently from Reddit.
Will be good to see it flesh out more, and I hope it keeps growing.
FYI the Threadiverse is currently shrinking. After the Rexodus we had ~55k monthly active users, whereas now we are down to (but stable at) ~35k.
This is especially notable occuring as it does alongside Reddit actively killing off access to old-reddit and placing even stricter blocks on browsing new-reddit in a mobile browser rather than their shitty app.
I no longer hold out hope that the Threadiverse will ever grow (much) beyond this level, without some major interventions that expend effort to solve the current reasons why people keep leaving in droves.
One of those those being easier on-boarding for new accounts, which PieFed more or less solved, while another being toxicity, which seems to only get worse over time (perhaps moderator reports finally being able to federate in Lemmy's upcoming v1.0 will help, but I am not holding my breath for that).
it won't grow because it's too weird and it's for IT nerds.
it's that simple. normal people want stuff like reddit that is easy to understand, easy to access, and shows them AITA style ragebait content, because that's what they like to consume.
I mean... some do, yeah. But I did not enjoy such content (as e.g. AITA) when I was on Reddit, so it is definitely by no means all that do. (Then again, I am also here rather than there so... perhaps not the best argument for me to be pointing to right now:-P)
But what is wrong with wanting software to be easy to use, access, and understand?
When I receive a reply in PieFed, the web browser UI will auto-scroll down to it. Unless there are lots of comments, and then sometimes I have such an extremely difficult time finding a comment buried amidst all the others that I literally have to give up and go back to Lemmy to see it. This has gotten simultaneously both better and worse over the last year, in different ways. Rimu is unfortunately not much interested in the UX/UI side of things.
In Lemmy, my Voyager app (on multiple devices even!?!?!?) keeps forgetting my login password over and over again, making it difficult for me to use (I have no idea if that's common or not, or like different when installed via FDroid vs. the Play/App stores?), so I gave up on it at least temporarily (who wants to have to remember their password?:-P).
So am now seeing your comment reply here in my web browser (Firefox on Android). Here I have to scroll WAAAAAAAAY the fuck down past this exceedingly long post to get to it (no quick button as Voyager offers, no auto-scroll to a comment reply and I believe Voyager does and definitely PieFed does as well), plus then toggle showing the parent so I know what we were both replying to, then start over again to scroll WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY the fuck down again, to finally be able to read and comprehend what you were saying.
If you ask me, we could stand to make things a little easier to use here. Maybe I can find a better app or make better use of one or something, but in any case I sympathize with new people who face all these same hurdles, yet do not know the structure of how things work here, nor even whether it will be worth their time to invest in order to learn.
oh i agree the UI and all that here isn't great. it's very 2000s internet.
but it seems new UI devs here like to inject their politics into their UI, at least with that whole Tesseract thing.
Only one but... yeah, yeesh, that's even being mentioned in other social media platforms, like Mastodon and Bluesky, although ironically my DuckDuckGo search couldn't find anything in Reddit.:-P
I will take some ownership of my experience and try out some other apps, but I do see where someone currently used to Reddit is going to feel like Lemmy is a very significant downgrade in terms of UX. PieFed is trying to help - adding support for things like user & post flairs, polls, emoji reactions, along with significantly stronger filters - but it has its own overly-opinionated "daddy must control everything" issues (though tbf, literally all of those are opt-out iirc, and better yet most are even opt-in).
Still, it's too complicated for most non-technical normies to want to bother with, if the experience right out of the box is not good, and all the more so when there are these stories about how toxic we are floating around our there, making them wonder why they should even bother.
As it grows I think it will be much easier to justify a new person or instance in cutting off entire toxic areas and that will only cause it to grow faster.
Right now we all have to weigh the balance between activity and toxicity but eventually we shouldn't need to make that calculation, we can have "high moderation" and "low moderation" versions of every topic.
Including when you secretly mass moderate people, Patrick.
I would love to see spaces for centrists and even right-wingers to discuss matters - how can anyone be expected to learn in a vacuum without that? However, I can see the argument that such a space need not be here.
I find it the height of irony that many right-wingers are much more able to discuss topics with one another than left-wingers - e.g. Jordan Klepper videos, especially his behind-the-scenes discussions about making those videos. Or perhaps a better formulation is that extremists/zealots are incapable of truly rational discussion regardless of political affiliation (though on top of that there truly seems something about the Right that facilitates ability to discuss matters more readily than the Left, with less judgement in advance than the incessant purity beatings, which seem to presume knowing the other person's mind completely even before they've barely begun saying anything yet).
When you say the discussions "need not be here" do you mean c/[email protected]? Or all of discuss.online?
I meant the Threadiverse as a whole.
Often I see that phrase spoken by e.g. a trans person who does not want to deal with anti-trans language, and so would rather that their instance not federate so broadly than to encounter such in the wild. It makes sense to me - that's literally the purpose for which blahaj was constructed, hence allowance of right-wing viewpoints goes counter to that purpose.
Or from pro-Palestinians who do not want to see anything other than rabid acceptance of that viewpoint either. Anyone who is wrong there is not acceptable to exist here, even in more entry-level spaces designed for such, and even if allowance of the latter might help to change people's minds.
The Threadiverse is not a place for "open discussions", it is a giant echo chamber reflective of the values of the majority. Tbf it could in theory be whatever people want, like if a right-wing instance were to be created (I think one does exist even!?) and then go to all the trouble of getting people to join it, but in practice it's all just took much effort. The network effect is real. So if the majority of people here want to be a certain way then... that is that, and unlikely to ever change.
Sorry I need to backtrack for a moment. I don't understand how you're suggesting right-wing discussion need not be on the "Threadvisere as a whole"? How would that even be possible? It's an open platform, instances don't get to control other instances.
We here all want the Threadiverse to succeed. That doesn't mean that it is going to though - it turns out that it takes a helluva lot of effort, which few to none are willing to put forth (all the way up and down the scale from contributing actual code, funding, moderation efforts, posting more content especially OC, or even just reigning in our most toxic impulses as we reply to one another in comments, smashing a downvote or failing to upvote).
I do think that eventually, as the technology itself gets better, the Fediverse is the only thing likely to be able to hold the tide against the onslaught of for-profit enshittificated alternatives. Even though we make our own kinds of Algorithms here that allow what can be said or done in the various spaces, almost none of which are properly labeled as such, leaving people to always guess incorrectly and then have to find out the hard way what are the unwritten rules.
Just been reading all your thoughtful posts in this discussion. Very interesting and edifying. Thanks.
Thank you for the thanks! I saw your addition to your OP and am sorry it became so controversial for you. This seems to always be what happens. You have been here as long as I have and perhaps longer if you had an alt (I got my start in kbin.social that went down and have jumped around ever since), so you know that Lemmy used to be quite a bit kinder. I think a lot of those people have since given up and left, bc it just isn't worthwhile to continue beating your head against the same wall over and over again, hoping for a better result the next time.
this was well written and a good description. I've seen a lot of the same. thank you for putting your thoughts out here :)
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Nice feedback :)
I also share the similar experience. As long we stay alway from politic the fediverse is much more nicer.
Unfortunately that is exceedingly difficult to do. Everything here wraps back around to it - it's in practically every community regardless of whether they were ostensibly for sharing memes, comics, or even discussions on "Fediverse" matters.
This reflects my experience, approximately.
Yeah… Lemmy/Piefed is a mixed experience for niche interests. I fear a set of “insulated hyper-political echo chambers,” to put it somewhat crudely, is not going to attract the masses from corporate social media.
It’s kinda my fault, though. I’m not putting enough effort in seeking out those niches, much less posting in them; it’s too easy to doomscroll.
I keep telling myself to dedicate more attention to “specialized” forums like HN or SpaceBattles or DPReview, but alas, my brain keeps failing me there too.
I think it is too early for such specialized niches tbh. The vast majority of those continue to die off due to lack of content. Even if you rigorously posted something literally every single day for three years straight - as so many of our communities have done before, just look back into our history - the community can still die off due to lack of engagement when nobody else is posting alongside you.
I don't mean to focus entirely on the negatives here, just saying that merely posting is by itself insufficient. Additional posters and other engagers are not going to magically spring up from nowhere.
A lot of the issues can be solved by technological improvement - e.g. whenever you click on a link to a post and it goes to some other Threadiverse instance rather than automatically opening up in your home instance, where you can reply and vote and that applies your chosen filters (hehe, dark mode?:-P) - that leads to frustration rather than drawing people further in.
In the meantime, I think we need to accept that the audience here simply is not a large enough size to support whole entire communities that nobody even knows about and therefore will not participate in. Also, a LOT of people currently on Reddit are American, Christian, and centrist or even right-wing, who ABSOLUTELY do not feel welcomed here (what with all the constant calls for the deaths of everyone in any Western culture, especially the USA right now, what with all the invading other nations and such). So since the Threadiverse has chosen to remain tiny rather than welcome others to come join here, the audience for the vast majority of niche content simply is not and will not in the foreseeable future every be here.
This instead of a community dedicated to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", we just have the likes of c/tenforward and c/risa that more generally hold all content in a larger category. Perhaps accepting that and posting to those larger categories will help make them more lively? PieFed offers post and user flairs to help sort content so that we can have our cake and eat it too - both aggregate into the larger communities (for discoverability) yet still help people find the niche material that they want as well. I think Lemmy was talking about eventually adding something along those lines as well.
I'm jealous you're part of the nine percent I'm more of one of the ninety percent of lurkers myself.
You're a 1%er, what a loser. Everyone who comments more than me is a no-life loser and everyone who comments less is a filthy casual.
No you’re a cutie pie.
thanks bae 😘
Hey I resemble that remark!! 🤓
Thanks for the community recommendations!
This is so true, and I hate it. I actually find Nextdoor quite refreshing because people are posting as their real selves, and nobody wants to be known as the local asshole. (Before someone makes an assumption, I'm not suggesting that we de-anonymize every social media platform. I just like having a platform that isn't anonymous.)
Nextdoor is the perfect encapsulation of why having real names tided to people doesn't do anything to improve how terrible or racist the comments are.
Hell they are even more than happy to keep the worst of the worst on the platform no matter how many times a person makes tos breaking comments.
I want to live where you live bc I've had to block several people on Nextdoor who are not afraid of being the local asshole. Entitled red state middle aged curmudgeons.
I deleted it entirely because they preferred having the assholes over the ones calling out the assholes.
Hell someone was running their entire campaign for public office on nextdoor (explicitly against their tos) and they didn't do anything until after the election
What is degrowthing? Never heard of it before
All explained on [email protected]
What searches have you attempted?
Usually when you ask someone who’s passionate about something they have no issue going into detail. I guess we’re on that Reddit behavior of just telling the person to fuck off.
Btw the subreddit I was directed to, the sidebar literally said “Discussions about degrowthing”. Brother IDK what it is. Sorry if I sound like an ass it’s a pet peeve of mine when people do this.
It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people are too lazy to even do a simple search for a definition. It's fine to ask for detailed info. But it's rude to ask a stranger to provide something you could instantly find on a search engine. I'm happy to provide detailed explanation, but I want to at least see the other person is willing to put in an iota of effort first. If they don't care, why should I?
[email protected] mention! Easily my favorite community here too.
My experience is much the same as yours. The Linux community is usually a bit agressive everywhere. I have been banned for questioning things as well. Still, I'd never go back to mainstream social media platforms.
Yeah the China one is atrocious. It's that one account along with 3 others doing it throughout the fediverse who can't seem to understand why people are critical of the narrative they pushed when constantly using extremely questionable sources. Favorites are either the an extremely Christian or the ones, yes multiple, based in Washington DC
So the entire point of this post is to just minimize the reasons for your entire post?
This reads as yes I have said terrible things that lead to the less good and lowlights but I am entirely valid to have them even though I am entirely the reason for the experience
It sounds and reads as someone who goes into as a football reference the pub that supports the team that hates the jersey you come in wearing and blame them for asking you to leave or say bad things about said team.
Why not ![email protected] and ![email protected] which are more popular than the ones you linked?
I assume it's for the same reason as me: to avoid the tankies like the plague they are.
cm002 is doing the Lord's work, and I encourage everyone to continue actively promoting alternatives to .ml communities.
Because where's there's a choice, I'll take the non-Marxist-Leninist option.
Well, the guy is a Zionist, so it'd probably go really well.
