Yes there is much less activity than reddit. Yes there are much less bots than reddit.
And yes, you must take time and care to interact more than in reddit, if you want Lemmy / fediverse su succeed.
And yes, on the long run the fediverse will superseed all other corporate owned social media just because.

If Lemmy started having as many users as Reddit has, the bots would come here as well.

Per-capita, more on Lemmy… in my observation. Definitely more alt accounts on Lemmy, per-capita. The Lemmy dogpile is a whole phenomenon.

People have showed up here on Lemmy reporting having been banned from Reddit (and for bullshit reasons) left and right now-a-days.
It's true Lemmy isn't as active as Reddit, and I definitely miss some Reddit communities I used to be part of. (I wasn't banned. I quit more on a "boycott" basis.) But Lemmy has its own strengths.
I'd recommend using the "new" sort and the "all" filter frequently. It's a good way to find communities. New/all has been most of how I browse Lemmy for a long time now.

I got perma banned from Reddit for linking to epstein files and naming names.
Technically, the ban is justified, because I broke two rules; dox, and sharing content where children are harmed (multiple has (censored) dead victims in the photos)
But honestly, I learned my lesson and won't do it again lol
What interests you? There's a lot of people here not willing to be the first regular poster somewhere but someone has to do it and others often follow.

I was on reddit for a long time and didn't make as many posts as I have here in 3 years.
I was a lurker for years on reddit until all their bs I moved here and am active now.

You just gotta hang in there while the fediverse gets more users, contribute where you can. I still visit reddit for specific interests that are dead over here but I only lurk, I don't cobtribute back. The fact is that if everyone leaves due to there not being enough users, the fediverse will never grow. From what I can tell it does seem to get more active over timez hang in there.

I definitely miss the niche communities and am mostly happy with what’s happening here. Would love to see it grow so local communities become relevant and active.

Banning Nazis
Reporting bots
Reporting gooner/csam subs (when the admins did nothing, I reported them directly to the FBI)

Bans are red flags, that's not the same as a "do not enter" sign. There's accounts on here that create communities no one else posts to, just so they can ban people they argue with in other places. Weaponizing the modlog for people that (for some reason) just blindly believe everything in the modlog.
It's a weird move for OP to say being here isn't a choice. But you can get banned from reddit for all types of shit, some is admirable and some you'd get banned from anywhere for saying.

I peruse all. Many communities are passion projects of folks but im not sure if any particular thing is diversly active. I really wish sto or champs people would come here.

I do that now and it kinda helps, but I consume internet a lot.

You could additionally get on Mastodon and follow hashtags and people. Mbin does it all-in-one platform, PieFed has started to be able to support it too.
I feel you I got shadowbanned on Reddit last night. Had no warning whatsoever. I didn’t know posting in other communities and commenting on posts would flag spam and I get well banned. Have noticed people use the downvote more on here than Reddit.

I never should’ve listened to the people who said I needed to get karma. I survived 2 days doing nothing, but the second I listened to them, I got banned. I would’ve rather kept my 0 karma than get banned at 28 karma.
I wouldn’t mind having a “Reddit Refugee Camp” here for all the people who’ve been banned for seemingly no reason. Make the description “If Reddit kicked you out, come here. We’re all refugees together”. I hear it can take months or even years to get a response to an appeal, so yikes.
Also, some Reddit users can be really mean. I simply asked for advice on how to grow my community and explained that I was doing it just for fun. People started saying I was advertising and that Reddit users don’t like that, or even suggesting that I could be working for the company to promote it and get paid. I’m like, I’m literally doing this on my own, in my free time, because I enjoy it. They really didn’t need to be so mean about it. 😭

I got perma banned. I assure you I wasn’t being bad. Didn’t break any rules. No idea. Just comment deleted and hours later banned. That’s it. It’s bots doing the banning which is an insane practice. You’re not even allowed asking why. That’s called harassment.

On Reddit, most were pretty slow or full of fluff back when I used it, up to around 2023. Lemmy, or more broadly the fediverse as a whole, is pretty active if you're not checking specific groups/communities/magazines/channels. Even more so if you use microblogging platforms, microblogging being e.g. Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram's types of posts, or hybrid platforms with both microblogging and groups.
But also, algorithms, when present, are very minimal in the fediverse. You won't be bombarded with stuff to follow, requiring you to curate what and who you follow. So back at being very active if not looking for specifics, follow enough communities of your interest, and your feed should fill up in no time.
