I'm always kind of amazed (and a bit nervous) when I see a comic that seems either inscrutable or a straight "nothing-burger," and yet lots of people have upvoted it, seemingly out of enjoyment.

I get the 'tree = slow' idea, but is the other idea here that the cook is... a total stoner? Is that it? I also vaguely see a Rastafarian hair-style, if that plays in to it...

Might be something to do with this image that was quite a meme not that long ago.

Hah! That's cool, and reminds me of a David Bowie / Jim Henson film called "Labyrinth," which I suppose would be kind of an oldie for today's audience.

EDIT: Image samples

Not on Lemmy.

I've actually never seen it but I assure you a large part of Lemmy's audience is of an appropriate age group for it and likely familiar with it.

I don't think there's another idea. I just think it's funny to have the ridiculous concept of the wise old tree in such a fast-paced environment, drawing attention to how incredibly slow it actually is, and how everybody is otherwise not thinking anything weird of a talking tree being the chef.

It is relatable to be driving to work, and checking your app to find out who you'll be working with.

It is also relatable to having a negative reaction when you find out.

It is surprising and humorous for the coworker in question to be a "wise old tree", lol, coworkers are usually human, but a wise old tree makes sense somehow. They're like that coworker who's a chill person, but not great to work with :p

Line cooks are notoriously high

(not that there's anything wrong with that)

For me the tree’s face is funny. And I also like absurdist humor so this does it for me.

Not sure if it's a specific reference, but it reminds me of the trees in commander keen

There's ways for a comic to be good that go beyond just the strength of the joke. I really like the art style, the color scheme, the ways the emotional state of the characters is expressed, and the background details. It just conveys a sense of this setting and the people in it really succinctly. It would probably be bad if it was a comic with the same joke but much worse execution.

Personally, I found it so absurd that it held my attention for a while, trying to decypher some obscure meaning.

In the end, I thought that maybe the wise old tree has to work at a fast food joint cause nowadays nobody wants to hear his wise advice anymore, made me chuckle.

That's pretty cool, almost like inviting the reader to create a little headcanon. Which you did.

I guess in my quest to share fairly pointed humor on the FV, I've lost touch with a certain "Jenny says quack" kind of viewpoint. :S

(Je ne sais quoi, haha)
