Here we go again with the preorders for digitally downloaded games. Why, why have we not learnt from all the botched AAA game launches?

Preorders for AAA games made sense when supply was scarce, demand high, and games pretty much working at launch day.

This is not the timeline we live in anymore.

But what if the bytes run out? What then?

I buy physical anyway, and have never had an issue just going into a shop and picking up a game on day one.

That ws when preordering made sense, there were queues andcould sell out.

1

I think publishers realized this a while ago which is why pre orders usually come with a free skin, or early access, or something like that.

Don't get me wrong, I still think pre ordering a digital item is stupid as hell, but there are definitely people in the boat of "I'm 100% going to buy it no matter what, and this gets me the game a week early" - so for them it makes sense.

2

It's very unlikely to be playable on the steam deck, so I won't be playing it. That's my only gaming device. Looking forward to seeing others enjoying it tho.

By the time they release it for PC, there might be a steamdeck2 that can run the game.

5

Lol yeah that could be true. I'd definitely be first in line for a steam deck 2, the first one is a great little machine.

Luckily you can run every single other GTA game before VI with relative ease on the Steam Deck!

3

Yes, very!

If you're not morally against the idea, I recommend you consider your legally purchased GTA V copy to just be a license, and then either download a crack to apply or pirate one. Rockstar requires a online check in to play your single player game.

And I am well and truly against that idea. But regardless, yes it plays well!

I will never understand preorders for software. It's infinitely copyable. There is no scarcity for software.

6

Not coming to PC until ~2032 anyway.

Not buying a console slower than my PC just to play this at <1080p <30fps with upscaling.

19

Get a small SSD and just put that game on it?

https://screenrant.com/gta-6-file-size-200gb-rumors-gamers-react/

According to GTA 6 Intel in a post that has since been taken down, Grand Theft Auto VI will "be just under 200GB", with other "sources" also corroborating this claim. Of course, this rumor has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive, and it was already clear to fans that GTA VI will be quite demanding when it comes to storage.

This one arrived in the post just in time for this news the other day

Nice DS (could be a DSi I guess, can't see the camera) you got there. I don't think I've seen that shade of yellow before.

2
lemmy.world

Thanks, it was my latest DSi pickup (there's been a lot)

This one is a color exclusive to Japan, it is the Lime Green one :)

Do you have GTA China Town DS version lol?

1

Ayyy nice. I'm still on my ye olde R4 clone lmao

3

I have waited quite a lot to get GTA 5 on a sale, and eventually got it for free (Epic giveaway).

I could wait the same time for a %75 sale.

I would write if we were on reddit

1

I'm mildly annoyed about this, I want to boycot it on principle because the whole union thing, but I'm going to have to buy it for my boy so I'll end up playing it anyway.

Anyone who pre-orders a digital product that can't actually run out of stock is a true mystery to me. Just wait and see. If you're I've of those eager to pay this, you've already waited literally years. Add a few days, see if it's actually playable and not a buggy mess.

What if it comes with a bonus like GTA4 remastered for pre ordering?

1

That you have to decide for yourself, and it probably also depends on what the bonus is. Functionally they are bribing you to choose the worse choice for you. The bribe might be worth it. If the game turns out payable and stable, it's all good. If it's a buggy mess, unfinished or you need to wait for like 5 patches anyway, was it still worth it?

To me there are also very few games that I need to play the moment they come out. I probably can't finish my backlog of games in my life time as it is, so a few days or even months wouldn't change much for me. Is rather wait and not fall into the marketing trap of "but free stuff".

1

In defense of preorders, even if they can't run out of stock, servers can get overwhelmed. If they also do preloading and don't fuck up a day 0 patch, you can ensure you can play the game immediately.

I still wouldn't preorder this kind of game, I wouldn't trust them not to botch it every way imaginable, but I'm reminded of the Silksong release, which I would've trusted with a preorder and could've avoided dealing with Steam going down when trying to buy it ;D

To be honest, if any game had enough demand to run out of physical stock, it might be GTA6.

Even then, though, I wouldn't trust preorders enough to do it. Stores love taking preorders, but they don't factor that in with the amount of stock they'll receive.

I remember seeing posts from folks who lined up to pick up their preorders of big games like Spider-Man and Tears of the Kingdom on release day, only to get told by the store that they didn't actually have enough stock to honor everyone's preorder.

11

Not saying it didn't happen. But I have preordered a small handful of games in the past, and never had that be my personal experience. One was even TotK. I feel like that speaks more towards that specific store's management than it does to anything else, personally.

2

I presume they're also printing physical copies, in which case preorders are still useful to secure a copy day 1. Especially if you're getting it shipped, because if you wait until day 1 to buy it then you're actually waiting a few more days for shipping.

Isn't pc masterrace excluded from GTA 6 release? It will probably be on PC in the next year or 2.

Singleplayer 90% probably

Multiplayer like 5%?

You couldn't play multiplayer because of anti cheat

3

I'm done with pre-orders. They ALLLLLMOST got me with the Halo remake.

Honestly, seeing as how Rockstar turned GTA 5 into a microtransaction machine after it was already a $60 game, I am so wary of buying it that I might just skip out entirely. I'm not looking to fund Rockstar's next decade and a half with a single higher price game and whatever the new Shark Cards are.

16

With all of the new denuvo hypervisor cracks I hope theirs a pirated copy available quick to release.

lemmy.world

Nah, im good. No new trailer either kinda stinks. Hopefully something new drops soon.

12
lemmy.ca

trailers are another issue I have. they are stupid and misleading. gameplay footage is all that's needed. I don't need some cinematic action packed slop video that doesn't actually represent the product.

16

It depends, there are plenty of trailers that show legit gameplay, or story from the actual games. If its legit and put together cinematically then im ok with it. I normally dont like straight gameplay videos since I really cant watch someone play a game and find it interesting for long. Its probably why i dont understand how people watch people play games lol, but its also not my generation either. For me the ultimate trailer experience is something original like Metal Gear Solid.

6

I’m not at all a “never preorder” guy and will happily pre order games I know I’m going to like.

That being said this game will be the only GTA game for the next 1/4 of my life so I also feel no pressure to actually buy it on release.

10

I'm going to pre-order five of these at least so I can make a profit when they raise the price for the final release.

8

I’m conflicted. Sure you’re being scummy, but on the other hand, you’ve got the best username on this site. Carry on
