The picture of the white house in front of the white house somehow gives me a powerful message: everything in this place is fake, nothing is well thought out.

Like he wanted to have his redneck show in front of the house and then someone told him "uh sir we can't actually see the white house from there, there's all your UFC stuff in front of it". "Oh. Meh, put a picture".

As a hick, please don't call this Redneck it's below even our standards on average and also tends to at least be cheap. Call it classless white trash profligacy.

He is fundamentally incapable of understanding any breed of redneck culture, with maybe the sole exception of the ones who go yuppie and develop a complete lack of taste. But who am I kidding few if any of my kin have even the mildest respect for themselves.

I would far rather have a president camacho. But to be fair they only got him after centuries of decline

In Rome, and other empires, when an Emperor was this egregiously bad, they would not only forcibly depose him, but also tear down all of his statues, works, scratch out his name from documents and dedications, and consign his memory to the garbage bin of history.

I'm never one to condone the death of people very much, but I wish nothing more than for Trump to die on camera like when Charlie Kirk got shot. I want the world to be able to watch, rewind, and watch again. I don't need him to die slowly in hospital, I want there to be absolutely zero chance the right could pretend 8.5 billion people didn't watch him bleed out on a sidewalk.

6

I'm hoping for a massive stroke where he leaves a giant pile of diarrhea shit where he collapses, and then he doesn't die but ends up drooling in a hospital bed with an IV for a year or two.

4

I wish nothing more than for Trump to die on camera

We've more than earned it.

4

I actually am hoping more for a Khaddafi or Mussolini type of death. I want a huge mob with "rude implements" in their hands to bludgeon him to death on the steps of the Senate. I would consider that to be most appropriate. Equally appropriate would then be mobs hunting down his administration, enablers, donors, influencers, and some followers. Make it brutal, crude, painful, and bloody. Make the memory of it last two thousand years. Make it so crushingly final that the rest of his idiotic followers will weep for their fallen God in the throes of oppression which follows for all those generations.

And I haven't even yet begun to express my utter revulsion and loathing for him and his followers.

Maybe SouthPark could help with "retard".

South Park's brand of enlightened centrism has played a not insignificant role in encouraging people not to vote. Even that goddamn giant douche and turd sandwich episode uncritically promotes a false equivalency where an admittedly not very useful container of water is the same as actual shit on a sandwich going in your mouth.

1

It was bullshit then too and their perspective hasn't shifted much. They still claim to be libertarians for fuck's sake.

1

I think they were criticizing the government and how we consistently have two shitty options.

Doesn't stan decide at the end of the episode it's still best to choose the lesser shit option ? But there is some critique about how the people aren't really represented anymore by politicians. Maybe they never were.

I do believe the creators have changed their position on a number of topics over the years. Like global warming.

They often criticize the left but they criticize the right even more.

I mean cartman is the character that represents the right conservative the most and the show makes it a point that cartman embodies all the worst traits of humans.

But that's accurate and doesn't attack marginalized groups!!! Doesn't have the same punchiness for this person and that's what's actually important here. \s

We've been 'building' a high speed rail route here in the UK for over a decade now. It'll probably not be finished for another 10 years, isn't going to reach as many cities as first planned, will probably cost as much as m**k is worth by the end, tickets will likeky cost you three legs and you'll no doubt always arrive at your destination late!

I get your point, but don't get too jealous of the idea!!

7
lemmy.dbzer0.com

That's due to corruption, not because AVEs high speed rails are hard to build (and the UK is much flatter than Spain..)

11
filcukreply
lemmy.zip

I understood that some stupid old laws were involved too, allowing any random village to veto infrastructure like this (sounds good in theory, but doesn't really work in practice)

6

Also modern ones, such as animal protection laws requiring a 900m tunnel to protect bats, at a cost of £100 million.

3

I don't think it is (only) corruption. I blame two things, on one side there is no meaningful and certainly no long term political support for high speed rail infrastructure, neither in politics nor among voters on the other side legislation is seriously anti-rail development. Laws are tough on any infrastructure projects, causing overheads larger than the actual construction costs (possibly even multifold larger) but they are especially hostile against rail projects and even against operating rail.

Geography isn't even part of that equation, it is an entirely different debate. (California is not so different from Spain, dry, mix of mountains and flats etc)

2

If only. It’s the universal western sickness of every change being up for endless debate, hearings and vetoes while doing nothing is seen as the default. Of course doing nothing is just as much a choice as doing something…

1

And yet it’s likely to get much worse, after we recover from seeing what happens when you DOGE it. The only bright spot here is the more illegal actions can be eventually walked back in court. That doesn’t undo the damage, but we’re going to need more laws like that

We in germany got u. We have this mega-project called 'Stuttgart 21', and it is going to be the new main station for Stuttgart. The completion was originally planned for 2019. It got repeatedly delayed, with the latest date for completion now being 2031. It is also severely over budget. If it comes to incompetence for mega-projects, germany is number 1 lol.

4

Stuttgart 21 is terribly late and over budget but it is a reasonable project in my opinion, even if many see that differently. There are some issues with it but overall it will be a considerable upgrade. Very substantial progress has already been made.

That said, Germany is a really negative model for rail development in Europe. It is still on another planet compared to the US though.

It’s a lot of fun to watch at a fair or small town arena. I really prefer my country’s seat of governance to be at a higher level than a county fair though

1

Those are usually privately run. So people who wants to see it can pay to go see it. There is no reason any tax money should be involved.

1

At least you get a show of your politican's corruption. We don't even get that.

6

Fuck yeah!

At the risk of sounding like Theodor Adorno, I've been saying that a classless society is uncomfortably close to a society without class.

Anyway, did they at least put a shark in that pool they're jumping over? Pulling a Fonz?

4

Maybe we just need to market it as the first step for viable railguns

3

Does this kind of crudity, cage-matches and motorcycle stunts on the closest thing a secular state has to sacred ground, actually work for anyone?

I mean I get it. The US is under the thrall of a cult and an oligarchy, and so this caters to an audience of one. But is there someone else in the US that actually enjoys this?

3

More or less, though the US civil religion doesn't infer diety or an afterlife. But there is a solemnity about Abraham Lincoln and the speeches that he gave during the process of freeing the slaves, that from that point on the US aspired to be a country in which the notion that all men are created equal would be ever inclusive.

The reality is far more debatable, even today. Especially today in which a small group of reactionaries have seized power and are seeking to enforce hierarchy and even reverse some of the steps towards inclusion. But that doesn't stop faith in the United States, that it aspires to equality and plurality and will at some point include an even greater part of the population into the fold of the mainstream.

1
lemmy.ca

Here’s a question I have about this from another country? Was this a privately funded birthday party, or did they use taxpayer funds for this?

If it’s just what he wanted for his birthday and paid for it himself, then it seems less of a problem. However, if taxpayer dollars were used for this instead of school lunches or Medicare, that is such an egregious use of funds that you’d think there would be rioting.

It’s not to my taste, but it makes a big difference who had to foot the bill for it.

Some countries also have cheap in-country flights, unlike Canada. It's cheaper for us to travel Canada to Europe or Mexico than across our own country. This to me is a big problem. I'd like to travel more in my own country.

3

Also, electric high-speed train reduces travel related carbon emissions by 85% to 90% per passenger-kilometer. Making it a no brainer if we gave a shit.

I'm starting to think the Western coalition empire/hegemon built itself on oil so its never going to let it go. The rest of the world is going to move on while it just clings to it desperately, hoping it will provide all the answers as it once did.

4

Hell don't even need highspeed rail if you have a station in everytown and the ability to pass without slowing down. I'd love the ability to one day take a train from say San Bernardino California to Twin falls Idaho.
