And FOO predates Kilroy.

But I’m talking about real memes from the Internet.

Chain letters were probably the original meme, weirdly those date back hundreds of years

Not the best comparison. A spinning chip with a loop of Funky Town would almost certainly just be taking two things made by someone else and slapping them together. Badger Badger was made as an original piece of music with original animations by Mr Weebl. Even if both are somewhat mindless, one is a soulless asset swap while the other is an all original multimedia creation created by someone who genuinely put effort into bringing mirth into other people's lives.

Totally agree. And timing. Big platforms didn't exist, or were still small. The internet was still new to a lot of people and no phones to access it. We had to go to a website on a PC and actively choose to watch it.

I could be wrong but that feels more special than a video liked and shared over a big corp messaging app.

7

It meant you probably found it because a real person showed it to you and the two of you shared a human moment rather than you were thrown at it by an algorythm trying to keep you staring at the screen.

This is spot on, I once had nyan cat on the background for like 4 hours straight, and I found it hilarious xD

Let kids have their own bullshit without thinking too much about it.

I can personally remember seeing “Gonads and Strife” in 2001, and “Winnie the Pooh: Satan Worship” in 2000!

Just to add to the list of ancient internet videos.

17

Winnie the poo satan had to be 1999 because I’m pretty sure i was still at college.

4

It was just a handful back then, now it's a constant stream, feeds full of it

12

Back in my day we used to frame our memes with black and white borders.

Either that, or it would be on a two-colour sunbeam background.

Awesome the Hedgehog nyooom

Tails: "Hey Sonic!"

Sonic loses rings ring loss sound effect

Sonic: "Hey man, let's go save the world, dude, forizzle!"

Tails: "What?"

Sonic: sighs "Eh, let's just go."

Brainrot is eternal, but I will say that old brainrot has a bit more kick to it like pre-atomic steel or import cars with safety exceptions. Also UN Owen Was Her edits seem to be eternal now that I think about it, the Dawn of War one by Alfabusa lives rent free in my head.

Exactly, our content was intellectual stimulating, like the hamster in the microwave Flash game.

8

I somehow managed to miss that flash game..... Now I need to figure out which guardian spirit kept me from seeing such horrors. It was probably Aunt Tifa.

2

We used to have Badger N+7 competitions - just take the dictionary and transform the lyrics accordingly then sing it. it was absurd and fun.

6

We had the most brain rotted memes ever and anyone who says otherwise is full of it.

3

My sister's friend group had an opposite group communication style. Every conversation I overheard went something like:

"We're going to Hawaii next month."

"We went to Hawaii last year."

"Oh, we went to Mexico last year."

"We might go to Mexico someday."

"I've heard of Mexico..."

Zero substance, no followup questions, no apparent interest in what anyone else is saying except as cues to say something else. "I just got a new car." "I have a car too." "I'm saying something about cars." "My cousin talks about cars." "I have three cousins."

These comics leave a bad taste in my mouth because r/comics is a free speech dead zone and that lady has a lot to do with it.

Wow, this time I actually got pretty far down into the comments before getting to the unrelenting author-hate

I've never heard of anything connected to her. What did she do?

3
lemmy.eco.br

Let me guess, she was harassed, complained about, gamers were banned, peaches unfrozen.

The reverse, actually. Back on reddit, she made a comic about her sexually harassing men, the joke being "haha, this never happens". She was then informed that this does, in fact, very much happen, and reacted... badly. The comments blew up, and it ended with the mods nuking the thread and banning everyone who criticised her. It left a very bad taste in people's mouths.

As you may imagine, the fact that every time she's criticised here the default response is "oh, you just hate her for being a woman" isn't exactly helping. If anything, all the comments jumping straight to "fuck you you will die alone" are actively making it worse.

...Really? I mean, sure, it's not like it's obscure. She even make a damage control faux-apology about it when it looked like people were turning on her. Unironically saying "I don't hate men at all. I have a son! Lol" was a particularly memorable response.

Wow and people are still like "Never forget!!!" to bring this up? The comic is clearly satire and even funnier with the reaction.

Thanks for the link, definitely an interesting example of a different kind of brainrot - promoting and reinforcing victimhood in young men which ultimately helped the rise of inceldom and neo-fascism.

5

They are. And they will continue to be, until people learn to stop dismissing them, or at least learn to stop poking the proverbial bear. Until then, you can expect every pizzacake thread to turn into a capsule speedrun of how "the left" lost men.

0

The comic that kicked it off, linked at the top, yes. I don't know what your threshold for "obvious" or "much more offensive" is, but the rest of the links are people who obviously found it objectionable, as well as her (and the mod's) reaction to having objections.

1

It's linked in the thread.

If your intention is to do the Ben Shapiro "prove to my criterion" thing, I'm not interested.

3

This hatred is far more insufferable than her mid comics. Nothing makes more more unwilling to remove her comics than people trying to be the arbiters of comic quality.

edit: I changed my mind. You're also being an asshole to people who weren't even talking about her. Banned
