review by an American: the aesthetic is right, but all the details are wrong. would definitely eat it, would never have thought to make it. fascinating to be on the other side of how other cultures must feel about our attempts at their cuisine

I'm sure someone somewhere has made that exact sandwich before, but not on purpose. that's the kind of thing you make because you're stoned or broke and it's all you've got right now

I identify as broke. I look forward to getting my gas service turned back on.

American here, @[email protected]. Don't listen to this.

That shit looks great. Looks like a sourdough bun from Jack in the Box. I don't eat a lot of food like this, maybe once or twice a year, but that there looks killer. Good job!

Another American here, sure it looks great, but that wasn't the point of the comment. It's that it's not quite American food. I love malt vinegar as much as the next Anglophile but we don't really use it here except for fish sometimes, and sure I'd fuck up a hot dog sandwich but I've never heard of one outside of a struggle meal.

Poor melted cheese and ranch dressing over it, then we're closer. Also, this is clearly the kid's meal.

1

Looks like a regular hamburger bun but toasted and used inside out so more like a grilled cheese outside. Kinda brilliant tbh

Looks totally edible. I suppose that tastes it also good.

It was kinda magical. After a week of stir fried veggies it hit the spot.

This is an elevated version of the 'clear out the last few things from the fridge to make it to payday" meals I remember from my childhood. Needs to be plated on a TV tray in a cigarette smelling room to complete the meal.

Adding air fryer hot dogs to my list.

Sounds better than boiled hot dogs.

It turns the absolutely cheapest hotdog into crispy skinned tasties. It is now my default method of all tube meats.

the texture is no better than when it was taken out of the package.

It's tough to improve on perfection!

3

In my other comment I said how I love them boiled but this reminds me - when I was around 5 years old I used to sneak to the fridge and eat raw hotdogs. So maybe that's why I love them boiled today?

I hate microwaved hotdogs

2

You can cook them in a regular oven or fry them in a pan. Anything is better than boiled.

I used to drive to the local Home Depot just to get the hotdogs they sold out front, then I learned they were so good because they were boiled and I just started doing it at home.

Anyway, my point is, boiled hot dogs are the best hot dogs!

I have bad news for you- the concensus in this comment section says boiling is the worst.

But that's ok- I'll continue to boil because I don't know any better.

When I was in college my room mate boiled hot dogs in my electric tea kettle and I still haven’t forgiven her. It was in 2004.

3

I'm sorry that happened to you. Have you reached out to them to see if they want to apologize?

3

It wouldn’t take away the memory of hot dog flavored tea, so what’s the point.

3

Lol that is nasty! I once got the flu after eating 2-3 hotdogs (I was a teenager) and puked them up. The taste of them coming up stopped me eating them for about 5 years. I imagine hotdog flavored tea wouldn't taste much better

3

I worked one of those dirty-water hot dog carts back in the day. Those things just sat in that water all day, sometimes 2 or 3. That’s where all the flavor is.

k0e3reply

I didn't know people willfully boiled their hotdogs. Just pan fry it.

1
lemmy.world

They're not grilled cheese if there's a hot dog in it.

Man that just made me think of a tuna melt and I just went food shopping... Time to go back... Lol

3

If you make a banana split, sit it on the counter, take a picture, say, "yep, that's a banana split". Then for whatever deranged reason you lay a fried hot dog on top, that's a banana split with hot dog.

This is a grilled cheese with hot dog.

Clearly not an American if you can afford healthcare

Looks/sounds tasty!

As a North Carolinian, and that's as far as I go for the sake of anonymity,... this is mid-tier, as a southerner.

Two upside-down hamburger-buns, two fried hotdogs, two slices of cheese and fries, the "default" of sides. This entire "meal" is roughly $5 of food for $2 of sustenance and I think you deserve better for yourself.

American food? This is on the sloppier side of "American Food", there's more bread and starch on the plate than turnip greens, BBQ or at least some fried chicken, god forbid some stewed carrots or sweet potatoes or something.

ALL THAT ASIDE

Homie toasted the buns upside down for extra crispness, and I bet being soft on the inside makes the chew interesting, and the fries aren't exactly a low quality. The execution is top-tier, but I mean, come on.

This isn't meant to represent any particular American dish. It's just a vibe of things American. I can't think of another country that could even offer something like this.

Literally $2.40 of food.

I'm in Lesser Carolina. Just 40 minutes south of Charlotte. Maybe you would prefer Carolina Bird Dogs?

what the umpty fuck is that a deep fried hot dog on a bun

2

Chicken tenders Left topped with bacon and Dijon mustard. It's a Carolina specialty known as the Carolina Bird Dog. You won't find it in the cities, but it's in the country diners.

4

This is like someone in their 30s doing a YouTube about "having McDonald's for the first time in my life"

2

It's not a particular dish but a general American vibe. And as an American living in The South And having traveled around the world I can tell you this is the only place something like it could exist. Most countries don't even offer the ingredients necessary to make it.

2

Ever been to the Carolinas? This is breakfast. Lunch is the same thing with ranch dressing.

1

And fatty, making it extra delicious.

Replace that hot dog with some breakfast sausage and you have a slice of heaven right there.

2
FauxPseudoreply
lemmy.world

People that have buns to use, hotdogs in the freezer and zero money.

5

If it was common I would have used its name. This has the vibe of American food. Ingredients that aren't available in the rest of the world combined together to form something that when you see it makes you know it only can exist in America.

3
lemmy.world

My only real question, is how is the cheese with the dogs? I usually go cheddar, I feel processed would be a bit tangy for dogs.

2

It's what's adding flavor. Think of it is adding the tang that mustard to ketchup would offer on a hot dog.

1

I had to look up "twice fried French fries". Sounds great but do you have a way to do it without getting oil splatter everywhere? It's the reason I stopped frying my fries and baking them just isn't the same

2
FauxPseudoreply
lemmy.world

Use a deep pot. Fill it no more than 1/3 with oil. It makes maintaining 350f harder but it minimizes cleanup and fire risk.

5

I keep it in an enamel cast iron Dutch oven. I keep using it and cleaning it until it's near time for a change. Then I'll do something that will ruin it like fried chicken. Then it goes in an oil container. When the oil container is full I bring it to our local trash drop off (we don't have trash service) and leave it on the dumpster where someone who recycles it will pick it up.

2

You know, I almost bought some of those but decided I didn't want something with a million tiny holes to clean grease out of. Probably best just to put it in the dishwasher though. I should get them

Five guy style twice fried French fries.

Wait, are typical fries in the US only fried once?!

1
FauxPseudoreply
lemmy.world

They start with raw potatoes and cook them once. Let cool. Cook again before serving.

A lot of fast food fries are cooked twice but are very different. They start with a potato stick, coat it in crispy making stuff, fry it, flash freeze it and then ship it to the restaurants for cooking again.

But Give Guys doesn't want a thin crispy fry. They want a fat fry.

2

Oh good, I was getting worried about what the wording implied. Many thanks :)

1

Those are two different preparations. We'd call them homefries, or potato-wedges.

1

The fries look insanely good. The hot dogs with the hamburger bun is an interesting choice. I've never seen anyone do that before. Grilled cheese is usually just normal bread, not hamburger buns. Grilled cheeses normally don't have anything thicker than a slice or two of turkey or ham. Great attempt imo.

1
lemmy.zip

Hotdog sliced along length and fried flat on the pan... it may be controversial to some, but I'm a bit fan. It's not like those sausages were gonna give you much snap anyways!

1

These were done in the air fryer. I have found that creates the best snap out of even the cheapest dogs.
