Idaho Republicans pass bill making it a felony for transgender people to use public bathrooms
The legislation takes aim directly at trans individuals using the restroom or locker rooms, threatening those who “knowingly” and “willfully” enter facilities designated for the “opposite biological sex” with prison time. A first offense would count as a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Those caught using the bathroom in repeated offenses, however, could be convicted as felons and face up to five years in prison.
It'll be interesting to see how this aligns with the Full Faith and Credit clause for someone who updates their birth certificate from another state that allows for that then uses the bathroom that aligns with said certificate.

Boise isn’t down for the count yet. Last year when the state started coming after Pride flags on government property the Mayor and City Council adopted the Pride flag as our city flag. The state legislature has been trying to figure out how to override that ever since. We ran the Hammerskins out of town when they tried to have a music festival, we’ve put MAGAt business owners out of business, we’ve got a lot of teachers and librarians operating malicious compliance to the anti-woke mandates, and I’ve seen more than a few bigots get their teeth knocked out and heads stomped. They might have taken over our state but they haven’t taken over our city.
Moscow Idaho is also still holding out for a bit longer. Lots of trans people going there as a stepping stone to get to Seattle, it's got Inland Oasis running pride and drag events and doing a lot of work making queer spaces. It is currently being literally invaded by christo fascists so I worry it's a matter of time but for now at least it's still a decent place (especially compared to most other parts of Idaho though I know that bar is so low you'd need a shovel to find it). I use a unisex bathroom in Austin that had urinals and stalls. I felt like such a badass when I kept my composition while making a peepee while three women passed behind me going in and out of the bathroom.

The coolest bathroom experience I have ever had was when I attended my sister's graduation ceremony from university.
There was a white tie dinner party after the ceremony, and every one was dressed up, it was a super happy and friendly atmosphere, full of beautiful men and women.
Anyway, I had to go to the toilet, so I found the men's room and opened the door...
...and immediately got confused...
...the first thing I saw was a beautiful woman in a crowd of other beautiful men and women!

Once, I was told by the manager of a place I was at that I had to use the women’s bathroom. A cis man followed me in and beat me, only stopping when a woman told him to get out. I was a minor at the time, 15 or 16. He was a grown ass adult. This was all the way back in 2012, I’m pretty sure. Never used public bathrooms again until I left the US last year.
So, I guess if you’re a trans man, your choices are to comply with the law and get beaten (even if you’re a child, since as we know, this is all to protect the kids after all) or to not comply and get fined/arrested.

To be exact, they believe that you cannot change your birth sex and that sex is what's important, not how you present or even identify. They also believe that men are sort of fundamentally evil. They're only worried about "men pretending to be women" as they call them (aka trans women) because trans women might enter women's spaces and the purpose of women's spaces is to protect women from men, and in their minds the only reasons a "man" might "pretend to be a woman" and be in a women's space is to prey on women whose guard is down because there aren't supposed to be men present.
Essentially if you were born with the curse of the penis, you are fundamentally evil and the only reason you could possibly want to use the ladies' room is because you are a dangerous pervert looking to prey on unsuspecting women in a vulnerable position. The idea that someone might genuinely identify differently than their birth genitals might suggest and not out of some malicious intent is literally outside of their philosophy.

The people making this law have no idea that there are people who are biologically intersex and, if told, will dismiss it as irrelevant because they're "a tiny minority". Deaf people are also a small minority and it's common practice to accommodate them. All people should be considered when making a law with the threat of jail time.

I was recently listening to a video of a call-in show where someone called in and made this argument that sex should be defined by what gametes they're "supposed to" produce. Supposed by who? The host said that's not science, that's fortune telling. Someone in the comments said they were an intersex chimera (male and female twins fused together in the womb) so which sex were they "supposed to" be?
I am, as far as I know, a cisgender woman. Though I've never actually had my chromosomes tested. But I have facial hair, a secondary sex characteristic normally associated with men. If I don't trim or shave regularly, I get a full beard. People who see me in public probably assume I'm trans. When I use public bathrooms, I fear being attacked because I'm mistaken for trans. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to happen in my area. If I were in Idaho, would I now have to carry my birth certificate to prove I'm female? Would I have to have my genitals inspected? Would I have to go to court and prove I'm female?

That... already happens. Tons of smaller restaurants/cafes I've been to have a solitary nongendered restroom with one toilet and a sink.
at my workplace when I first transitioned there was a single gender-neutral bathroom in the entire building, and it was frequently occupied because every white woman in the building had the same idea to use it as the "pooping" toilet ... so when I was early transition and didn't pass, instead of use the women's restroom on the same floor as my colleagues (where I might run into them and make them uncomfortable), I would have to walk to another floor of the building to use another business's women's restroom so I didn't run the risk of seeing anyone I know.
I understand trans people aren't that common and it can feel absurd to have all this infrastructure for a small minority you never see, but ... like, sometimes we do exist and need to use the toilet that was built and set aside for us to use. (I'm sure people with disabilities feel the same way, as the gender-neutral toilet is also often the one built to be ADA compliant and accessible.)

As a Canadian, I could have guessed... There's a sort of obvious pattern that's emerged over the last couple of decades involving the less populated areas being the most deathly afraid of the world at large, thanks in large part to the sample biases incepted through social media.

I live in upstate NY. Back in the 1980s (yeah, I'm old), we had this little bar up on University called The Generic Bar * the G Bar. Anyhow they had 3 bathrooms, Boys, Girls and Both. Our local mall has three as well but they call one of them "family" restrooms which I think can be used for anyone as they are private. In my entire life as a female, I have never felt threatened in a public bathroom (well, maybe a little intimidated by an attendant to leave a tip). It is ridiculous. Like, maybe Idaho should make some public safety laws on gun ownership like require training and maybe insurance. In the event your gun is not secured, and it stolen or used by another in a crime, the victim (or their family) could collect on that insurance... I am just saying, perhaps they have bigger problems.
The best bathroom I've seen is at a nearby brewery. One bathroom for everyone. Toilets on the right, urinals on the left, signs designating which side is which. Each has a stall, with floor-to-ceiling doors and a sturdy lock. It looks more like a locker room from outside the stalls. There's big circular sink on the way out, with a mirror and shelf on a nearby wall. It's extremely private in the place you actually do your business, but the remaining area is very visible from the outside and there's plenty of people around given everyone's sharing the same space. I cannot imagine a safer way to lay out a bathroom. It's amazing what happens when you give people privacy.
"oh but what if people shoot up in there" - Sharps disposal box. If someone is shooting up in there, they probably shouldn't be, but if they are, there's a safe way to dispose of it. I promise nobody looks at a sharps disposal and decides to start using now that there's a place to dispose of the needle. Really nice for people who take prescribed medications by injection, too.
"oh but it's too expensive" - I've been lucky to travel enough to see less developed places I didn't know the customs or language of with bath"rooms" more akin to bath"sides-of-buildings" that I STILL felt safer in than American bathrooms because they have a REAL FUCKING STALL. They're gender-neutral mostly because (shocker) two bathrooms tend to be more expensive to build and maintain than one.
If legislators really cared about this issue, they'd put resources toward remodeling public bathrooms to at least have decent stalls and better visibility. They aren't doing that, so that's not what this is about. It's just an easy way to pick on a minority by way of creating a boogey-trans-man - Republican business as usual.

Right, and what is the documentation that legally expresses that? A birth certificate. Seems really easy to say "I went to the bathroom that aligns with my birth certificate with the good faith intent to follow the law." People can't see their genotype or phenotype with their eyeballs, so relying on that document seems the best a lay person can do. Seems a good faith to follow the birth certificate, whatever it may be modified to.
All of that is fair, except for one thing: you absolutely can see phenotype. It being observable characteristics is literally part of the definition. The pheno- prefix has a Greek root meaning to show or display, same origin as in phenomenon. A phenotype is thus categorizing something based on how it appears.
Well hey, at least they're focusing on everyday issues that affect the lives of every American.

It's even sadder that cis women could have a better life in this country/world if they were just men. That was the point of the commentary, gender inequality, not transphobia.
There's also far less stigma around a woman who dressed boyish than there is around a man who dresses feminine. Probably because society treats the woman better if she's a man.
