Fairphone is nice. Flashed /e/os on it, now its even without 99% google shit :D

I use lineageOS personnally and you can install it without any google apps as well. And the updates are quite frequent.

22

Had LineageOS on it previously, but the official support of e/os means automatic updates.

Have you had issues receiving group messages on e/OS? RCS is borked but I figured that would be the case. Not getting group texts is a problem though and I've tried every solution I can find but nothing seems to work.

Highjacking your comment to ask generally: Is there an easy way in lawnchair to put my apps into folders in the dock drawer? Going through settings is kind of tedious and the automatic caddy thing puts half of them into some catch-all category because it can't identify their purpose.

That's so far the only thing that I find annoying about lawnchair. Nova spoilt me because it made that part so easy.

I've also not found a way to arrange my widgets without padding between them. That's a bit unfortunate because it means my todo list doesn't fit next to my calendar anymore but I can deal with that.

Do you mean dock or drawer? edit:

  • Dock can be done by just dragging app untop of other app.
  • Drawer can be done in settings:app drawer:folders

Sorry, meant drawer, had a brainfart. I know how to do it, but it's more steps than in Nova and my lazy whiney monkey brain doesn't like that :)

5

Yeeah it's kinda unintuitive, and on several occasions have apps been removed from folders on my device after they had received an update. Still a great launcher overall. 😊

I wish they were sold in the States at a more reasonable price. Murena's prices are ridiculous.

45

Yeah it's pricey. I'm on a fairphone 4 and that was easily over $700. I have at the same time had a very easy time replacing the screen when it broke, and have just stashed several of the more breakable components, which it's nice that I can do that super simply.

I don't think fairphones are much cheaper from fairphone directly, though I might be wrong. Overall, I don't game on my phone, and the fairphone 4 has been able to tackle all my needs pretty well without issue. Most of my gripes come from minor glitches or certain features lacked in lineageOS, but tbf, it's still a very solid OS despite those minor issues.

17

Tariffs go brrrrr

(Good luck friend, I hope the price drops soon or that you find a good alternative :D )

Kiss launcher is amazing. It's really worth a try. Once i got used to the concept it seems silly to have anything else

I wish they'd get their security in order.

It would be the perfect Graphene phone if they did.

To answer OP, Niagara Launcher.

I just got a new phone and I'm trying Kvaesitso to move away from Nova, but I just can't get used to it.

I think I just really like the paradigm of having a 'desktop' where I can freely arrange my most used apps in a specific layout, and Kvaesitso - by intentional design choice - doesn't allow it.

It's a shame for me because I love the ethos, I love the open-source approach, and I love that it's a wholly original launcher - rather than a fork of the stock or anything else.

For some it's the perfectl launcher I'm sure, but to me it's like even after I unlock the device I'm still stuck in something that feels like a lock screen to me, and I feel weirdly trapped and claustrophobic.

Not sure why it makes me feel that way, but it does!

4

Ah yeah it's not for everyone. I like having a clean homescreen and call things up as I need them so it works for me. I make use of the tagging too.

3

Bruh what the fever dream fuck!? Am I a fuckin normie or can someone back me on that being extra af?

Cool though

What is wrong with launcher repositories not placing a screenshot if their launcher in the readme.md

3

Because some people consider the readme to mostly text and informative. This one does link to the actual website, which does contain screenshots. To answer your question: nothing's wrong with it. 😉

That aside, I've been on Kvaesitso for quite a while, now, and it's quite nice. You kinda have to get over it being different from a lot of other launchers.

Use this table and try a few. Find one you like. You can check the privacy report for trackers etc on the Exodus site.

I tried a whole bunch of launchers and settled on Pear launcher. I keep KISS launcher solely for the search (launch KISS search on double tapping the home button). Neo launcher was on its way to greatness, but then development was abandoned.... So if anyone has the skills/time/interest in forking that, that would be great.

Do you know if there is something similar to Niagara launcher?

1

No idea bro. Install and try them out. I don't remember Niagara from when I trialled it.

1
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Try out Niagara. It only takes about 5 minutes to set up.

If you're like me, you'll think it's too simplistic, you think you want all that nova launcher shit. But do yourself a favor and give it a try. Pick a background, pick an icon pack, select a few favorites and that's all you need to try it out.

After that if you want to really dig in there isn't much (some of these things are pro features, I can't remember which because I decided to get it so soon after trying it out), it's like 45 minutes at the most to customize your clock, do the custom widget (multiple widgets can share space, you just swipe through), decide if you want music controls on the home screen, and set up pop-ups (like a folder but more, can be in your favorites or your app list), and hide apps from the list (either because they're in a pop-up or you just never use it). And then...that's it, there's nothing else to do.

I tried it out a while ago when the original developer for nova quit the company that bought nova. Did a quick setup, played around for 30 minutes and bought pro right away. I was very surprised at how much I liked a simplistic launcher.

You've got nothing to lose but 30 minutes, check it out.

Edited for clarity about the nova developer quitting.

You can turn it off. It tells you what might get funky if you do. I didn't notice any problems so I've left it and all other analytics reporting stuff off.

3

+1 for Niagara. I've been using it for quite some time, and I love the simplicity of it. No clutter and just a quick launcher. I have a widget stack for my calendar, tasks, and Firefox search.

2

Every setting is locked behind premium...

Also I missed my drawer. I'll just keep never updating nova

Faiphone is being frog marched out of Australia. Each telco is shutting it down and blocking IMEIs. Sucks for the people that imported them.

Cant even use it as data only. So unless you use it as puerly on WiFi it's going to landfill. 🙃.

Also. Lawnchair nightly/beta.

8

As an American, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess: corporate influence.

6

The 3G service was shutdown. The telcos needed to ensure devices can call VoLTE incase of emergency.

FP5 does this. But it's not officially sold here. So they see a modem there unsure of and now cant confirm if it will reliably call emergency. Easier for them to block it than see it works.

From what I understand the major telco had some priority VoLTE stuff that made orbit not work. The second major telco seemed to support it as they use more open standards. There's one left and well have to see how that goes.

It also means telcos can now choose when to drop support for given phone models. Literally force users to upgrade handsets by turning them into WiFi only bricks.

3

I'm personally using Kvaesitso, but it isn't necessarily for everyone. Otherwise Lawnchair is quite good and stable (for a beta). It's not on fdroid but it is on izzyondroid

bring back USB3.0/DP out on the FP7 and I'll bite. The FP6 going to USB2.0 screwed the pooch for me.

6
feddit.org

Want kind of use cases do you have for your phone that that's relevant? Sure it's nice to have, but I can't even remember when I last moved files to/from my phone

2

Fast Seedvault offline backups. Say you're traveling and wanna backup your phone to a fast usb ssd, or you need to transfer everything to another phone without Internet

4

As another commenter said, seedvault is a huge part of it. That, and when I am taking video to upload somewhere, it would take forever to transfer a 20-120 minute 4k file.

And file transfer isnt the only reason. Android 16/17 are bringing desktop docking features, and thats s feature I've wanted on phones since Android 8. I have a device with DP out now, and as someone who owns a dock its a game changer for events where I need to display to something fast. I can't wait for it to be a fully fleshed out DE. (Not to mention the fact that Chromecast is a shitty format that my is doesnt even support)

2
lemmy.world

Really hard to beat the Fossify launcher. Very similar to vanilla android, available on F-Droid... Far superior to /e/os having icons scattered everywhere.

5

Seconded, been using the fossify launcher for probably over a year now. Only thing I wish it had was customizable icons, but otherwise it's perfect.

2

I couldn't be happier than with my Fairphone. Of course, I ditched the original firmware and went for something more lean and privacy-focused.

It has lots of storage which I also extended with micro SD. Now I have my whole music collection for offline-listening.

I can even turn the phone completely off by pulling the battery.

If you complain about your FP, you may wanna try flashing /e/OS or CalyxOS (once they are back) or GrapheneOS (They will port it, soon for the device).

Any source on the grapheneOS? Because everything that I've read about it says that fairphone just doesn't meet the hardware requirements for graphene's security models

9
N3Cr0reply
lemmy.world

Maybe I'm wrong about the GrapheneOS. I have no specific source in regards to FairPhone. However, they announced Graphene to be ported to several devices. (It had been Google Pixel exclusive, until now.)

1

The grapheneOS team has stated repeatedly that the fairphone does not meet the requirements for GrapheneOS, they are currently working with a hardware partner to bring GrapheneOS to a (supposedly) new device. This is most likely not fairphone because

  1. Fairphone is not selling worldwide, the annoucement mentioned a worldwide partner
  2. Fairphone does not mean the Hardware rwquirements and (arguably more importantly because it is harder to fix) the software requirements. They do not have timely enough upgrades.
6

Dragon Launcher. You'd be surprised of how well Radial menus actually work with touchscreens. It's great, you don't want to go back afterwards.

Edit: radial

5

I still cry myself to sleep after the premature death of Windows Mobile, so I use Launcher10, which brings the Tiles back to life.

I started experimenting with a super minimalist Folder Launcher, but it doesn't seem ready for release yet, a couple of crucial (IMO) features (like default settings, bulk edits, proper apps list) are still missing.

There's also Fossify Launcher Beta, which is an open source launcher. It's fairly basic, but gets the job done. A super cool feature of the Fossify apps (since two releases ago) is the option to set your own fonts from a file, so I'm running their Calendar, Phone, Contacts, Calculator, etc., all with the Nothing Phone's dot font.

2

Yeah, the lack of distractions is the man draw I believe (also the qwerty keyboard on it is pretty nice), but it had rough edges that prevent me from recommending it. I had a feeling it would be like that since it is the first and only phone that company had made, but hope springs eternal.

Long time Nova user, trying out others now because the Pixel launcher is too boring.

Niagara for a scaled down ui. 8 apps on the home screen, rest is in a super easy to reach list on the edges of the screen. Currently on day 3 and liking it. Paid version is either €12 a year or €40 lifetime. Basically all the flashy stuff you see of it is locked behind the paywall.

Hyperion is good, pretty close Nova relative. UX needs tweaking. Dock and home screen are completely separated so you can open a folder in the dock and one on the home screen at the same time. Minor things like that.

Octopi I did a quick review of on the other site. Tl;dr navigation / interaction is kinda laggy (gestures, tapping, moving things), doesn't have google feed integration but customization is top tier, better than nova imo. I left it because of the interaction issues.

Smart Launcher is built around a search function. Not my thing so I moved on quickly. UI/UX is good though.

4

Hey, I'm using that. It works fine.

…well, I have little to no expectations from a launcher beyond "can have pages, shortcuts, widgets, and hide apps", so there's that. It got a few visual customization regarding icons and grid size, and so on. The biggest praise I can give them is that nothing seemed out of place or annoying.

3

I got it configured how I want yesterday. Most important thing is to find and enable the setting that lets you resize widgets beyond what they want to be resized to. If your widgets don't want to be shrunk, that setting will make them shrink.

1

It's a Pixel-esque launcher that aims for "pixel, but more". I can't remember why I didn't stick with it which to me means it can't have ducked, but it didn't make a big impression.

1

Been using Octopi Launcher, and it's a decently solid replacement for Nova. I actually think it's more flexible as you have customization tucked behind the single long press on your home screen. With Nova I always had to figure out the best way to swipe up from the bottom and more than half the time end up opening the app drawer.

Do you find there to be a split second of delay when you switch to it before it'll respond to pressing things? Unsure if I'm going mad, or holding it wrong, or something.

I'd like to buy a Fairphone, but the missing IP68 rating is concerning to me. I really don't want to have to worry about my phone dying if I get into a rainstorm for example, especially while traveling.

3

So I have a story for you. I own a fairphone 3+ for a little more than 5 years now.

Recently, while doing the dishes, my phone accidentally slipped in the sink. I protected it with a phone case and a screen protection, but still, panic ensued.

I removed the battery as fast as possible, dried it up as best as I could, restarted it, and it worked just fine.

Well, most of it at least. The jack port took some damage but ended up fixing itself (???) and the usb- charge port refused to charge the phone unless it was tilted a specific way.

Doesn't matter, I ordered a new usb-c module for less than 30€, and replaced it (i'm not really good hardware-wise, but fortunately, it was pretty easy). Now it works like a charm.

I feel like an event like this would have been a death sentence for most other phones, and even if it wasn't, my clumsy ass keeps dropping my phone, so it might have been even sooner.

So far, this phone just refuses to die. It might be slightly outdated and buggy at times (apparently it got better in the last iterations), but it is still very much usable with no critical failure yet.

4

It really shouldn't be hard to make. Im typing this on one and there really is just the back with screws which could be tricky, but a replaceable gasket should do the trick even if it isn't going to survive a few meters of water.

1

I only really have a problem with ads that are for shite. Ads for things that specifically provide an ethically better alternative to evil and detrimental mainstreams feel more like necessary PSAs

*evil:

  • uses slave labour
  • uses policies that lead to harm or death
  • actively works to destroy the environment more than fix it
  • funds or is funded by evidently cruel parties
  • Charges unnecessary profits (>50% of cost to make) to benefit upper management rather than fairly pay employees

*detrimental:

  • farms its users for invasive data or provides the tools to do so
  • Scams customers by charging much higher costs than appropriate

etc.

For example, Fairphone is currently an ethically clean company, and with Framework, while the laptop division is clean, the management is not.

TL;DR: Sold off, dev team was (figuratively) slaughtered, OG dev is pretty much out of the picture, new owner is planning on injecting ads into the launcher and we basically know nothing else about the future of it. I.e they're turning it into a cash grab.

5

That's the whole reason I downloaded it was to get away from cash grab companies! Well I'm glad I found out, I'll try Lawnchair now.

2

They've said they're gonna honor existing paid users but there are no guarantees.

Edit: They confirmed they're honoring existing prime owners, so we're good for now. New users face $5 subscription.

2

2

So, I use Nova on my Galaxy Note 9. Nova asked me to allow ads. I just kept closing the message until it stopped popping up.

I don't see ads anywhere on my phone.

Where are the ads supposed to be? Or is the concern more data harvesting than actually displaying ads?

1

Ewww I just saw one, yeah. Thanks for answering too. I literally never use that feature though so I can probably just ignore them if that's the only place they are.

My wife got a Fairphone 3 and it was really slow She gave up and bought a used Samsung. I took he old Fairphone and it turns out she just had a really slow SD card, which I discovered by removing it so she could take her pictures with it. After getting rid of that it was fine...
