Fake Xiaomi 3rd gens in circulation

The Xiaomi was supposed to replace a ATV stick I ripped out of a projector to use on a TV out the back.

I got the Xiaomi 3rd gen from my countries trusted equivalent of Amazon. The store used to be a brick and mortar store. The device came with an international AC plug in the box but atleast had an adapter thrown loosly in the bag. Since it's Chinese I didn't think much of it.

I was frustrated with Stremio stuttering to the point of not being able to use it, and thought there's no way this should be worse then the ransom stick I've been using.

There was also no way to enable Developer Mode (as I've done on all ATVs and Phones) no matter what I did, even after a reboot.

I'm glad I was going to do this to remove the Xiaomi stuff. It sent me down and internet hole and I found two key posrs on another social media site btw Fuck Spez.

Lookup those lists for more info but some of the key tells are.

  • Back writing on the back of the decice
  • Name of the pre installed Netflix app
  • Device listed as something else in your Google account (but this might now be fixed)
  • Cant enable dev mode (not sure if all the fakes are like this)

There's some extra apps you can install to tell too, but from the box and device it's almost impossible to tell.

Other users have got these form Amazon.

Anyways. Just thought a post should exist on the fediverse.

T Deck Board and GPS

I'm planing to buy the Tdeck board because with the pro/plus version, Id upgrade the antenna and want a bigger battery.

I would also turn off the GPS because I don’t want to share my location publicly. I only need to communicate with a few people or when in a group camping.

So the board doesn’t include GPS (but can be soldered). Is there anything elsd I'll miss out on by not having GPS?

N00B Question - R9000 not suported but on git?

I haven't used open wrt before and need to buy a comparable router. I'm also not sure if I might swap to ddWRT (and I'm not really sure what the difference is)

The Netgear R9000 is supported by ddWRT but not on the official list of openWRT routers. However, there is an active git for the firmware and the git seems to be a mirror of the official openWRT

So does this mean that openWRT is available, but in dev for the R9000? And that I could use it but might have issues?

The reason I chose the R9000 this is that I was looking at the R500 and can get that pretty cheap and works on both openWRT and ddWRT. But I found a R9000 for the same price as the R500 and the R9000 has double the ram and flash.

Two or one PGP key when sending via addy.io?

I want to use PGP in Addy.io so I can at least encrypt the subjects (full encryption strips HTML) before it sends onto my receipt address @customdomain.tld in mailbox.

I also want to encrypt everything received to mailbox (encryption at rest, but not zero knowledge)

I'll won't use the mailbox web app and will use the private key(s) in my mail client.

Should I use one key for both services, or two keys?

I know both services could make a copy before they encrypt with the key, but I'm ok with thst risk. I also know about proton and simple login, but I'm not a fan of proton at this stage.

A followup. I might want others to send an encrypted email to [email protected] hosted at Addy.io

Should I make an individual public key linked to the email address I give the sender?

Although new to PGP I understand the basics of i, and that a key can have any email address. I'm just not sure what's best practice in this setup.

Using a custom domain with two seprate email accounts.

I purchased a custom domain to use with mailbox.org.

The MX records are setup and basic tests are working. I'm getting [email protected] showing up in my mailbox.org account.

But I got confused with setting up a family member with [email protected]

Do they need to pay for a plan too?

There not worried about the privacy they just want the custom email address. Is there anyway to do this for free or cheaper, without self hosting email?

Side question. I've been paying for anonaddy to hide my normal @outlook account. Are there any benefits in keeping anonaddy to send emails to my custom domain. Instead of just using a catchall, or pre-configuring some aliases?

The only benifits I see are

  • Anonaddy can make accounts on the fly
  • On The Fly accounts might be easier to disable than things sent to a catchall
  • Anonaddy dosnt reveal your domain (maybe this is the big draw card?)

Thanks.

Winge about New Dark Colour - Molly only

I use Molly but I'm sure its the same for Signal.

A recent update seems to use my wallpaper accent colour to drive the use a purple colour for the Dark Theme.

For some reason, to me, its really jarring.

While you can change the chat colours and wallpaper (although its more limited or you have to import your own). The purple still shows it many spots.

I'm pretty sure this is what changed unless I'm loosing my mind. I much preferred the old look by a mile.

Linux on iMac?

Question is title.

In the past I've installed many distros on many older PCs, but never used linux properly (although slowly moving over to avoid win11). I've also had a heap of history with windows installs.

A family member has been testing Mint on an old laptop and is going well. This is a trial run before I update their iMac laptop (not sure what one but no longer supposed by OS updates).

I've never booted to an iMac BIOS or installed over top of apple.

  • Is this going to be like installing over windows?
  • What issues can I expect?
  • Should I consider another distro?

Podcast like search for YouTubr channels

I'm looking for a way to browse YT or find creators I might like.

In the long run I'd like to use YT like my podcasts. Thst is, play the new content daily/weekly form people I follow rather than mindlessly scrolling the algorithm.

With most podcast apps I can just see categories and go through the top creators in each category. Along with seeing how often content is posted. This way I can also check out other random categories and find content outside what is normally like.

Searching YT just gets all the clickbate and my algorithm is pretty rubbish. Im using Tubular and SmartTube, but perhaps there is a website or other way to find creators?

What YouTube channels post content similar to TV shows?

I'm sure there are channels that run similar to Public TV. They may post a regular show, or a variety of shows.

Maybe web-series is the word to use. They must be of decent quality and updated within the last 6 months.

I'm know not looking for documentaries, essay videos, pranks, reviews or vlogs.

And not 1-2 people going around doing whatever, or a group of people that sit with a static backdrop chatting or pulling up graphics.

I'm looking for funny game shows, dating shows, reality tv, sit coms, drama, variety shows, comedy or anything that would be similar to flicking through over the air TV (but not jsut shows copied from TV).

Outlook Calander Sync Issues

I've got a few accounts on my phone, and the calanders are set up to sync.

When I look in the outlook app I can see the outlook events as expected.

When I use the Samsung Calender app (preferred), the Google Calander app, or any other Calander apps the outlook Calander has issues.

Some events appear, others don't, some seem to disappear etc. I think it's to do with android and the syncing of the Calander, but I'm not sure what.

I've used the reset account button in the outlook app, and deleted and re-added the account.

Written with dyslexia.
