They toned down the ass in the legendary edition unfortunately.

Even 2016 and Eternal have pretty moderate requirements for their fidelity.

Arguably, 2016 and Eternal prove it much better than the original - people nowadays are way too spoilt to really appreciate those early 3D graphics, and IMO early 3D graphics aged much worse than pixel art.

6

I don't think anyone disagrees about early 3d aging poorly. But I wouldn't even call OG Doom fully 3d on account of everything besides walls and floors being sprites. Sprites are just pixels, and no vertices mean no 3d.

3

Also came here to say Doom. But can it (a potato) run Doom? Even if not, someone almost certainly will have tried and partially succeeded.

ps: And no other game listed in this topic can claim this

7

Great game indeed, felt like it personified my experience with dysphoria, all without talking.

6

Super Mario World is a game that shows artistic design outlasts everything else. That game still looks and plays amazingly.

But I think the real issue is "looks good" is very subjective.

18

BG1+2 is peak.

IME, Minecraft looks kinda bad until you install shader mods, at which point it needs pretty substantial GPU power. But IDK, maybe Bedrock Edition is more efficient, I only ever played the Java version.

7

The water is really incredible. Makes me wish to go to the beach, makes me feel good, and makes me thirsty.

2

A lot of older 2d games can run on a portrait potato and the artwork holds up excellently.

RC2, civ 3, Anno 1602, sim city 3000, AOE2.

lots of really good pixel art: Celeste, hyper light drifter, dead cells, etc

9

Ragnarok online is what made me love pixel art.

Wish gravity wasn't a greedy shit company that deserved to burn to the ground.

But man pixel art games are just special.

3

Chiming in to say Sea of Stars. Absolutely gorgeous pixel graphics and music, and a true love letter to old school JRPGs. It gave me nostalgia for something I didn't even know I lost.

1

The Mad Max game from 2015 is surprisingly well-optimized.

8

Super Nintendo-era pixel graphics games like Chrono Trigger. Pixel graphics need a lot less computational power to look good IMO.

Similar for modern pixel graphics games like Risk of Rain.

8

TitanFall 2.

Metal Gear Solid V.

... maybe a slightly more impressive than average potato.

Amazing what you can do with a well optimized engine, eh?

I play classic wow private servers. Game came out in like 2005 so it'll run on whatever. The graphics are minimal and stylized to in a way that makes it timeless. Plugging wow-hc.com

The character models look awful though. draenei and blood elf were massive improvements.

Pretty much the entire classic trilogy of vanilla bc and lk can run on a potato and have good visuals imo. I enjoy each but vanilla hc is what I'm into atm.

I understand the appeal, but I can't call wow good looking overall. Mechanically and design wise it's great.

1

Warframe. They got it running on mobile, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. I myself ran it for a few years on a shitty graphics card that could barely run minecraft with a texture pack.

6

Hah. You'll need the whole worlds potatoes to run a single frame

3

Looking good is about artstyle more than realistic graphics for me so most pixelart games.

Weirdly enough DMC5. Also Monster Hunter World. Those had no business on my GPU which keeps shitting itself from Darkest Dungeon 2 but they just seem to be optimized really well

Hmmm. I was pretty late to the party in 2019. Maybe it got better, or I might just be memory-holing the jank. I used to play my games on a wall projector so after a while I stop noticing a certain amount of latency too

2

Graphically I'd have to say either Broke the Investigator or Corn Kidz 64.

One, as someone described in a plauthrough video, looks like a Saturday morning cartoon. The other, I think nails that old 90s 3D somewhat stylized video game look pretty well, IMO.

3

Bit of an older one, but DMC4 definitely ran well on just about anything. MT framework was really good for stuff like that.

Tic Tac Toe
On a potato

After every game, you can then take a thin slice off the top and you get a fresh surface for another game.

stick in a stew

I don't understand how one is able to make a stew sticky enough, though.
Isn't it usually watery?

0

Yeah, but not enough to be sticky, right?
Or maybe I have been adding too much water?
