Hello. My younger sibling has recently created an account on a small Wafrn instance (we avoided the main one due to them being too young). However they're now facing the problem that I faced back when I briefly joined a small Mastodon instance way back: there's very few posts, and almost nothing is federated; it feels very barren so they're not really using it and spending most of their time on Tumblr (which is what they want to avoid). What can be done to find more people to interact with and follow on smaller instances?

Little late-night doodle about a game I've been playing

I have a personal server I connect to through Tailscale whenever I'm not home, however I've found that whenever I'm connecting remotely connection speed drops drastically from 100MB/s to <3MB/s.

I expect there to be some speed loss when connecting over the internet compared to locally, but 3MB/s doesn't make any sense especially considering that according to a python script I found that uses speedtest.net to test internet speed through a terminal, it reported 109Mbit/s download and and 76Mbit/s upload (~13MB/s; 9MB/s), which aren't amazing but leagues beyond 2MB/s. Moreover I also did a quick test with a friend of mine briefly using port-forwarding and they reported the same speeds, which tells me it isn't Tailscale slowing me down.

Is this just what happens when you connect over the internet? What trickery is afoot to allow me to download things from the interwebz using that sweet full 109Mbit/s bandwidth?

Little late-night doodle about a game I've been playing

I've been thinking about finally getting myself a proper domain for my server, but a friend told me that to get one I either need a VPS with a public ip (which just takes all the fun out of selfhosting) or purchase a static ip, which is beyond what I'm willing to spend for a hobby. Do I have any good options or should I just let it go?

Also, if this isn't the correct community for this, I'd appreciate being pointed to the right one, thank you

Update: after reading the comments the two main options I'm considering now are either a cheap VPS to use as proxy for my network via wireguard, or DynamicDNS. I'll see if I can figure out the rest from here, thank you!

Playing The Finals on my Fedora KDE install, the game runs wonderfully under proton, however a recent update added verification to the EAC config file so the workaround I found to make Steam Background Recording work now causes the game to close. Is there another workaround for this?

EDIT: Using Gamescope seems to bypass the issue, however now my mouse cursor won't use the correct theme in the window...

I'm aware of what end-to-end encrypted means in a technical sense, but does the lack thereof guarantee the messages are just plaintext readable to whoever's manning the machine?

It's the first idea I had when it came to making sure login on my server is secure. Instead of having a small password that relies on my fallinble memory and may be also guessed in a not-completely-rodiculous amount of time.

Meanwhile a fairly small file, something like a 512 byte "user.key", to be uploaded along with your username, or even just having your username built-in, seems much safer.

What am I missing? I assume I'm missing something, because the idea of something like this going over a lot of smart programmers and developers' heads does not sound right

Hello!! Some recent technical problems on my family's NAS gave me a big scare and finally pushed me to figure out a way to back it all up. I'm asking here specifically because I really don't know where to even starts because of the fact I've got just under 50 terabytes worth of data stored in a 7-disk RAID-5 and would prefer to keep it cheap. What are your suggestions?

Hello! I excitedly bought myself a new Graphics card for my setup. Now, this was the first time I'd ever built a computer, and the case I used was an old hand-me-down mid-tower. While purchasing the card I considered power draw and airflow, however I did not account for size. The drive bay can't be removed if not by forceful means. I assume the best course of action is to just purchase or find a bigger case, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any option so that's why I'm asking here. What do I do? Do I try to hardmod my case into having enough space for the card?

I kinda went on a little research spree on economics this afternoon but at one point I figured it's probably good to know if it's possible for, say, at least 98% of people on earth to live a happy fulfilled life at all.

I know there's plenty of people who'd be more than happy to have literally nothing more than a house, food and water, but that still leaves a whole lot of people who want other things in life.

I recently had a discussion with a friend on Bluesky who knows more about the inner workings of the platform, and it pretty much solidified what I already thought was going on behind the scenes with ATproto, which seems to be a lot more complex than the system behind AP, however it did seem to improve on it to an extent simply by splitting up different parts of the "social media pipeline". I was curious what people here think of it

Ps: I really don't mean to proselytize about one or the other!! I think it's good that both exist. Although it does raise me the question of wether protocol diversification is good...

I've recently started reading the book by Dale Carnegie and so far, roughly a third into it, I've found it pretty good although not revolutionary. What are you folk's opinions on it?
