If ads on real radio were just clips of standup comedians, I wouldn't complain about 'em. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Unless they were all by annoying hacks ๐Ÿ˜‰

My main radio station I listen to is publicly funded so there's no ads. It does however have a show with 2 comedians doing social and political commentary with deadpan delivery. Sadly just one episode per week.

There's also a hangover show with other comedians but I don't find it as funny recently. Greatest hits include things like a morning exercise routine that concludes with moving yourself just enough to grab a beverage and resume drinking.

Wait, are you listening to the drunk Indian show on WOJB? I thought he died.

3

Nope, different country. Unfortunately, the show is in Estonian so unless you speak it, I don't think it'll make any sense to you.

4

All the stations are such over the top parodies. Real world people saying dumb shit isnโ€™t funny, itโ€™s sad.

8

Patrice o Neal having a character in wktt gta4 radio is one of my faves. Those were so funny at the time

The only music station I listen to is one run by the students in a liberal art college near me, on a good day it has a range of something like 10 miles. There is almost no talking except station ID notices and everything they play is music I like.

I'm a 50 year old goat farmer with "scene girl" taste in music.

Old World Radio for Fallout 4 is the best radio I have yet come across. Ice Cream Carl is the best DJ! I will die on this hill.

I'm listening to Fallout radio so much, Spotify Wrapped said that my listening age is 100.

I've played New Vegas so much that I can now actually just sing along to half the songs in the game.

I've got a decent baritone voice, I can do Big Iron, Blue Moon, Heartaches by the Number, Jingle Jangle Jingle, whistle the solos, etc.

Butcher Pete from FO3 is also quite fun to sing, haha!

And of course: I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire.

And and, I dunno if These Boots Are Made For Walkin' made it into a Fallout game, but it very much seems to fit, and I taught myself to sing a baritone version of it.

Also you'd really think Hound Dog and Heartbreak Hotel would fit in, but I guess nobody can afford the licensing rights, hah!

But yeah I'm gonna say Mr. New Vegas is my favorite dj from the series... much better voice synthesis than our modern day, newfangled LLMs, Mr. House has some kinda trick up his sleeve, as usual.

We got self-refferential 'chuck norris' jokes:

"You know, I tried to measure my Charisma on a Vit-o-matic Vigor Tester once. The machine burst into flames."

... and a comforting, soft yet commanding voice, telling you:

"It's me again, Mr. New Vegas, reminding you that you're nobody 'til somebody loves you. And that somebody is me. I love you."

In all fairness, I have GTA 4 to thank for introducing me to LCD Soundsystem, so, also very very good, just... kinda harder to sing along to, so much of their music is incredible soundscapes.

Different flavors of awesome.

Oh that reminds me!

Don't think this counts as an in game radio station...

But holy shit, PayDay 2's entire cumulative soundtrack at this point.

If you wanna do something high octane, turn that shit on, you will be amped.

kernellereply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

For sure Payday had bangers, it's been a while though I'll be listening soon. As for high octane shit it's always been an easy win for the Doom series for me

4

Oh I mean, Doom's OSTs have had so many good songs, I didn't even think to mention to mention it lol, its like the basline from which 'intense frenetic action' is measured lol.

Fallout music has been the weakest part of any of the series, I use to pop out the disc after the game loaded and play CDs in the originals. Thhhhhhrrrrrreeeeee Doooooggggg if your out there vault looter pick up some music that doesn't stink up the room.

4

I really like rockabilly and 50's music in general. Love classical music! Liszt, Debussy, Chopin, Brahms, Strauss, Wagner, really a great lineup.

But OWR brought so much to the table. Ali-G, Schwarzenegger, Bobcat, as radio hosts. NIN instrumental, synthwave bangers, Twilight Zone, Peewees Playhouse, 8-Bit Hits.

I still just put on SynthstreamFM youtube and code for 7 hours and put it on again.

Icecream Carls hatred for Machoman's antics, his love of Trashcan Carla the Commonwealth just feels better!

pawb.social

Burnout Paradise had a really awesome soundtrack, too. Driving games always pay for the bangers, and it must be a lot of fun to write fake news and whatnot for interstitials.

27

Fight Music for the Fight is still one of the most blood-pumping tracks Iโ€™ve come across. Amazing it shares a soundtrack with a censored version of Girlfriend by Avril Levine.

A tech bro radio station, filled to the brim with AI songs actually sounds like a very GTA thing to do.

19

I hope there's a radio station like this, however all the songs are really terrible and poke fun at AI throughout.

1

Lazlow Jones (the writer/voice of the radio stations) and Dan Houser (Co-founder of Rockstar) left the company to work on an AI Satire venture.

10

I don't think there will ever be another game with a soundtrack as good as Vice City.

I was so upset the other day, I went onto Spotify and looked up GTA San Andreas radio, and hit shuffle. This is a playlist I've used for a while that was always accurate to the original game, but sometime seemingly recently someone added songs that absolutely weren't on the original playlist, things like dua lipa. The playlist had been infected with like 8 songs, mostly from 2019. Shit was beyond disappointing, but that's what I get for using Spotify.

You could look up the songs used in San Andreas and put together your own Playlist. Fix the injustice in the world and all that.

7

You can literally just copy/paste the songs into a new playlist and delete the weird ones. It wouldn't even be remotely hard

Wait until you hear the radio in fallout4. Man, that shit was sofa king good.

10

I know what Fallout's radio lacks that would make it so much better: An in-world talk show. Like, the songs are great and all but they're not unique to the game since they used licensed stuff. I like the DJ segments, tho. But I mean... All we get is a few seconds of Three Dog, or Mr. Las Vegas, or Travis here and there (depending on the game).

Imagine a GTA style talk radio station, but in the Fallout universe. Maybe the host gets a raider to talk to that inevitably ends with the raider shooting up the studio. Or a hick wastelander trying to show off his 3 headed brahmin because he doesn't understand how radio works.

3

Iโ€™ve actually fancied a real podcast in real time during gameplay. A podcast that specifically talks about things relevant to the game itself so it doesnโ€™t feel made up.

3
kernellereply

Fallout 4 had this, with the host remarking on things that happened in game. You could find and interact with the host in the diamond city, he could even die IIRC

Maybe a bit niche, and I haven't played in a while, but the piped in bar music at stations for Elite Dangerous was incredible. It did not have to be that diverse and immersive, but their sound team doesn't do anything less than 100%.

6

How do you like to eat your rusty browns ring donuts?

Some of the radios in vice city were so funny. I still listen to them today at work

8

the only time i ever listen to radio talk shows are the ones on gta

man is lazlo fucking hilarious

7

The devs had a better taste in music than most irl commercial stations.

6

I've been playing GTA 4 the radio selection is so good. I always end up finding some songs I would have never listened too.

5

I would 100% listen to a JB Smoove Radio station if it was exactly like his GTA V one lmao.

5

Need for speed most wanted playlist was a banger as well to be fair

4

Here's my hot take to offer:

The Krunch 106.66 from Saints Row 2 is the best radio station in any city sandbox GTA-style game.

I like metal and there are a couple bands I started listening to because of that radio station.
