This will only end badly. And I mean racist Goofy meme videos targeted to children badly.

Sora can now make the Frozen/Spiderman content that has been missing

19

Maybe they can pick up a few good ideas from what people prompt. Their own writers aren't producing much noteworthy.

5

Oh, so the slop generator gets to use Disney's characters, but they'll sue a daycare for painting Mickey Mouse on the wall. I see how it is.

128
lemmy.world

Say what you want about Altman, he is a fantastic grifter. Instead of suing the shit out of his worthless hypebag bullshit machine “company”, they’re… paying… him… to license their characters…? These corporations have lost their goddamn minds for this snake oil

Disney needs to write off a billion asap. That's literally all I see. Invest in AI? You already lost money and you need a voided check.

23

And as a free bonus you get your characters in front of even more millions of impressionable faces than usual. They can tie their personal identity to your IP incrementally ever more. Hooray!

yes /s

3

At this point I genuinely believe OpenAI knows they're doomed. They are putting all their effort into these massive deals, trying to tie themselves to as many other companies as they can until they are "too big to fail". Then when they go bankrupt, trump won't allow the stock market to crash, so the government will step in and pay everyone out. Maybe these other companies are just trying to get in on the grift while they can.

15

I have read 0 facts about this, but I bet that the billion 'investment' is mostly just IP license values.

8
lemmy.world

This seems wild. This is the last thing I would have expected. Maybe Disney knows they stand no chance against AI and just want to profit from the doom it will bring.

75

I think it has less to do with their product and more to do with backroom executive bullshit manipulating stock prices, but that's just an armchair opinion.

69
piefed.social

I think their intent is to create a fuck ton of cheap AI media to flood Disney+ because even their shitty crap costs a lot to produce. If Disney can create content basically for free they could see a pretty big benefit.

Cutting paid animators out of animation has been the disney dream since Walt was still blowing Nazis.

Amen. Artist have always gotten treated like shit and Walt was a miserable prick to his workers.

13

All those who would prompt Sora to generate a video of Donald Duck forcefemming Hitler are environmentally conscious and know that such a video would waste an insane amount of electricity.

Yeah, but this also allows their characters in Sora. So anybody can create media with Mickey Mouse. Though maybe there’s more details in missing.

I have watched a lot do kids shows when my kids were little. I think AI is more than capable of replacing a lot do the low effort junk that is currently created. Dora always felt like it was created by an algorithm.

7

It'll make the green line go up and that's all they care about. I completely agree that it seems they won't be able to do anything to stop it so they might as well try and make money from it.

15

It is both wild and infuriating. Any on-hands creative now have a good reason to be outraged at the about-face.

12
lemmy.world

They might change their tune once the slop video generators are pumping out officially licensed scenes of Elsa getting gang banged.

42

In my day Snow White railed by the gnomes was animated by hand and passed around on VHS.

Just executives milking their company for as much money as they can. They don't care for their brand. If it makes them money, they'll totally let Disney slide into an AI content slop hell scape. Ruining the reputation and quality of their product, then bounce with their severance and bonuses when stocks start to fall. Just to go off and do it all over again with another company.

35
reddthat.com

What I don't get is how are they even milking their IP? They are paying OpenAi to use their IP (in exchange for equity in an unprofitable company).

I'd understand it better if Disney were getting a billion dollars.

13
sh.itjust.works

They think they'll get to make movies without paying any writers, actors or directors and still make the same amount of money off them.

12

I imagine Disney itself isn't getting the kickback here, but whomever the deal makers are. Give us a billion dollars from your company and we'll give you a cut.

2

Disney is perhaps the one company on earth powerful enough to put AI companies on their place regarding all the copyright shit.
How fucking naive of me to not realize they'd join up instead

34
lemmy.world

"its characters" bitch half of your characters are just ripped off from fairy tales

32

Now your kids can make their own completely unregulated Spider-Man and Elsa content at home

27
lemmy.today

Why spend money advertising your old mouse when the kids will do it for you?

24

OPENAI, is seeking some poor sucker to hold the bag before the bubble burst. disney will regret it.

20

I love how this should be the other way round (the slop company paying the content "owners") but thanks to turbo capitalism the world get's fucked up in new disgusting ways every day!

19

Disney movies will be AI generated from here on out.

Think about it, simulating real actors or their voices has strings attached. Talking cats don't sue, or require wages.

19

Conveniently, the AI models are probably already trained on Disney characters to begin with. Definitely a cash grab though.

16

The first week after Sora was released, characters were shown doing all sorts of brand-unsafe things. OpenAI spoke with companies after that and created blocked term lists to prevent characters and certain interactions with them.

That is fairly coarse "limiting." However, user red-teaming still makes it possible to show copyrighted characters doing objectionable things. That will likely continue once this is released, unless they are doing something different (like having output be re-reviewed by a secondary AI system and actively exclude the output's description of negative portrayals rather than just user prompt terms).

10

all monopolies should be split into different smaller companies which would then be given to the workers who would collectivize them. seriously!

11

So now does this mean you can just say it was ai generated and you can't get sued by disney /s

10

Well you still can, they just choose to not prosecute open ai since everyone knows they ran out of money like 3 years ago.

More Disney IP out there means more money for Disney, and with open ai anyone can produce IP infringing art

/S but is it really /s ???

You can bet there's stipulations out the ass with that. The goal is probably to basically just to keep characters in the public eye.

Oh yeah because OpenAI is known for respecting boundaries, terms, conditions, anything....

How long before someone tricks SORA into some Disney themed Rule 34?

9

God, I didn't think i could want OpenAI to crash even more than I already did!

8

Disney? Uhhhhh.......no. I don't think that's a winning bet. You could give birth to a child 10 years from now, that child could grow up to be the longest living person in history, and Disney will use the story of your child as a new film/character. They'll copyright your child's life, and they'll STILL be around 150 years later to dispute that 150 years in copyright protection is too short.

They know that everyone will use AI to remix all their products into lucrative viral content. Just look at all the AI slop that so many channels on YouTube where they just recreate Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, actors into all kinds of videos, remixes and music.

I think Disney sees all this and they'll jump ahead and remix everything with AI with all the products they own.

Expect to see Star Wars Episode XX starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing

Or Star Trek XXX starring the entire original cast for the 60s

I'm still very AI ignorant but why would disney go all in on AI when I can just tell my own AI to make up a "disney-like" movie for me and skip the middle-man (disney).
