He's indoctrinating out youth with a satanic Muslim mysticism called Al-Gebra.

in case some people don't know: algebra actually comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr".

29

I legit never heard the word sinophobia and I thought it was a trigonometry joke.

I guess we need a joke that combines math and racism then.

It's the 0th cause of Indophobia?

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent.

There are still people alive who drink dhmo. But it's close to 100% indeed.

Kinda a stupid gotcha to gatekeep with. Ask about a basic function such as “what are the 4 bases” and turn it into a teaching moment.

Like the flight where the 'Karen' notified the stewardess that a passenger was writing notes in a foreign language and was concerned he was a possible threat. Turned out he was doing math equations

Yeah, our stupid people really broke the mold over here. They are painfully dumb, and trying to reason with them will actually damage your health.

subtraction rule only allows a smaller numeral to be placed before a larger one if it is one of the following combinations: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, or CM. The numeral 'i' ((1)) can only be placed before a 'V' ((5)) or an 'X' ((10)).

9
feddit.org

That rule wasn't always hard and fast, just as IV or XL were sometimes written as IIII or XXXX respectively. The XVIII Legion was occasionally termed XIIX, which should have been right out, but it worked well enough to inscribe in stone on a memorial and use on official calendars.

The fundamental requirement was that People would look at it and understand what it is saying. There was no "Office of Numeral Oversight" correcting people. The norms that we may learn about are descriptive of the majority, but not strictly prescriptive for all the cases.

If it follows the basic additive/subtractive pattern, it's good enough.

If you want to be a prick, write IMMMM

14
lemmy.world

Maybe the symmetry made people more likely to overlook the conventional way of writing things. Still no hard rule, but more leniency if it looks cool.

It probably happened before you even saw the meme.

Fox News is gonna run a piece on how we must eliminate Arabic numerals from American society. Your family will be talking about this travesty at Thanksgiving.

I shared it ironically with a group of people that won't understand it. I proceed to watch silently as they raise their cortisol levels.

A new Home maker class featuring falafel and hummus as side dishes is now mandatory to graduate High school.

Homemade falafel and hummus is so much better than store bought and so easy. I just gotta perfect a pita recipe.

That reminds me of the old joke:

Customer: This coffee tastes like mud!

Waiter: I'm sorry sir, it was ground this morning.

Home made babaganoush is also amazing.

Slice a large eggplant in half, place face down in a glass baking pan. Add a few tablespoons oil, shake salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder lightly on top. Cover with lid and bake at 375° for an hour. Till skin is shriveled and darker. You can also uncover near the end and roast it more if you like.

Let it cool. Take each half and scrape the loose insides into a food processor, it should just all slide off the skin. Add a few cloves of garlic, some lemon juice (maybe 3 tableapoons or adjust to your tastes), then toast a layer of sesame seeds in a smaller pan 6 or 9 inch sized with a bit of oil. Stir them often because they will burn if the heat gets to them too long. Add to the food processor and blend till garlic and seeds are chopped fine. Salt and pepper to taste.

5

Whew, that sounds delicious!!! Def gotta try making some 😋

I'm not a fan of hummus, but I'd be down for that class anyways. Teach kids some delicious food, particularly foreign in origin, to show them the rest of the world has nice things too!

Until they pull a Britain and invade countries for their food...

2

And still somehow miraculously forget they can actually use the spices they invaded for in the first place...

I highly doubt they're panicking. If they're even aware they're perturbed at best.

Fair, panicking was probably a bit of a stretch there. But I like how they at least burn a bunch of money on his political opponents

I learned Arabic numerals in 1978 in preschool in Wyoming, and I never became a terrorist.

This post came directly from Al Jazeer which references Al Gebra.

Well to be fair, the republicunts would prefer kids not learn any numbers because only stupid people vote for Cons...

Funny that in Chinese, I literally have always known it as 阿拉伯數字 (Arabic Numerals).

I'm starting to realize more and more how much the Chinese Language is just simply better at teaching concepts.

Disclaimer, I am ethnic Chinese, but I'm totally not biased at all :D

Edit:

Also, while we're on the topic of Numerals, teach Chinese Numbers as well, its literally one syllable per character, much easier to pronounce and remember.

English has become my primary language, but I still often find myself counting in Chinese (Cantonese).

They're definitely known as Arabic numerals elsewhere too. It's mentioned in Math class fairly early on when Roman numerals are also introduced. I'm sure that even in American schools, it's mentioned that they're called Arabic numerals.

Unless you mean that in Chinese there's just no word for "numbers" and you have to use the name of the specific system?

3

Damn, maybe the US system is worse than I thought.

There are so many general knowledge things that aren't necessary for survival or to do your job that the general populace seems to lack. This is one of them

2
lemmy.world

We call them Arabic numerals too but the street name is numbers. Very powerful concept

2

Chinese/Japanese characters have kindof always led to good student outcomes in wrote memorization because of the necessity of pattern recognition. With an alphabet there’s simply less to learn, and you don’t have much context since etymology in alphabet based languages is so much more esoteric.

Also, Americans aren’t really taught much about technology from outside of the American sphere of influence. American schooling has a lot of dead zones.

1

ITS AN OUTRAGE I TELL YOU! MATH IS AMERICAN! INVENTED IN AMERICA!
