What's high income 30k a year or more? Such a joke...

The $2,000 dividend could come in lots of forms, in lots of ways, George," Bessent told anchor George Stephanopoulos. "You know, it could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president's agenda -- you know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, deductibility of auto loans."

Oh so no money for you

So what this means is there will be no $2000 check. It will just be "hidden" relief that is almost impossible to actually see and verify. Cool cool cool

29

That's what I get out of it... something they can say they did... but its actually nothing...

10

Its represented by any social service he does not gut. Seriously we are running month over month deficits at historical highs. There is no dividend.

2

These are all measures which reinforce some negative aspects of US economy, apart from social security taxes.

17

They want to let us deduct our auto loans? I haven't heard that one yet. My car payment is crazy high though lol

I'll add that to my $5,000 DOGE dividend. Why do news outlets report what he says when he's obviously lying?

85
lemmy.world

I’ll bet money that he’s going to actually try to do this.

Remember when Congress voted to send Americans assistance checks during the pandemic — and Trump plastered his name all over those checks for shameless political points?

This guy 100% wants to send out “Trump” checks again.

25

Yeah, I think he both really wants to do it, and at the same time is absolutely lying about having done any actual work or planning to make it happen. Trump love nothing more than to just hang stuff out there, knowing full well he'll capture the news cycle whether or not anything actually has a chance of happening here. But literally the entire country is now governed based on a large group of cronies and enablers trying to interpret his stray demented thoughts, so I'm not sure what we expected.

4

"When Congress voted" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Because in theory that's just what news outlets should be doing. He says something and they should bring that to the people. Whether or not it is a lie or the public considers it a lie is not news YET. We're better of receiving this information even if we know it to be a lie because we should be up to date of whatever the turd is saying.

3

No, it really isn't. That's a press release. Or the Truth post Trump made.

News filters for worthy events, explains mechanics, and adds other context to help its readers understand why this thing is worth knowing and what it might mean.

Trump steals people's money, then gives some back to them, and that's supposed to pacify them?
How about not stealing people's money to begin with?

67
Ghystereply
sh.itjust.works

and that's supposed to pacify them?

Every single MAGAt will instantly forget any complaints the second they have a check in hand.

PattyMcBreply

It doesn't actually sound like anyone will get a check "lots of ways" probably means it's never going to happen, but all the MAGAs will point to him just saying this and gushing about how generous he is

That's weird, because the COVID checks were insanely popular and just giving everyone a $2000 check with his name on it would be great politics. I guess it's good they're doing it differently.

9

that was pretty much hamstrung by lich mcconnel, who laughed at the idea of giving poors anything, hes worst than trump by the way, until THE LICH WAS PRESSURE to vote on it.

2

Well you have to factor 2 things, there still was a battle with congress to get those checks out during covid. (I remember Bernie walking into congress with the massive printout of trumps tweet saying he was going to send out checks), and of course factoring in that trump knew he wanted to get elected again. It's 3 years away from the next presidential election... and him getting a 3rd term probably doesn't involve an election.

$2000 a person won't even offset the additional cost from the ACA subsidy reduction. So, a one-time check that would only cover several months of the recurring cost that he's given us.

50
infosec.pub

When you’re that rich, $2000 and $0 are basically the same. It’s a pittance for what they see as an underclass of poors.

25

I think a lot of people don't get this.

Imagine there's something that you want--maybe a lot, maybe only a little. What that something is doesn't matter.

What amount of money would you consider to be a negligible amount for you to spend to get that thing you want? Maybe it's a few dollars or maybe it's as little as 10 cents. For me, now that I am reasonably comfortable, anything that only costs about a dollar, I consider to basically be free.

This is how the wealthy view anything that is "only" in the thousands of dollars.

14

for rich and poor alike. Its only relavent for people who are just getting by. If your staring down homelessness it will be delayed for a month. The government was shutdown for longer.

2

Lol, bet he's only saying this so when the Supreme Court comes down on his illegal tariffs he can say he was going to give us that money.

44

Technically, If the Supreme Court rules that his tariffs were illegal to begin with, he will be expected to reimburse everyone affected. That may be all this is. He's just trying to spin it as spontaneous generosity, rather than a court ordered obligation.

25

remember his 1500% reduction in medications, we never heard of it again after he mentioned it.

3

He's just doing what Republican administrations have had to do over the past 20 years and bribing people with cash payments right near the end of their term after wrecking the economy.

In two weeks. Very special. Don't want to say much now but it's gonna be really special.

The Trump 2 week chicken taco timeline.

He started with "solving crime in Chicago in 1 day"

Then they had a Medicare plan just a week away, but he learned that that was too close for the right wing spin machine.

17

To be fair, he has followed through on his promise to be a "dictator on day 1".

Just ballparking that there are 250 million non-high-earners, at $2k a pop that's $500 billion. Two thousand dollars won't change anyone's life, but $500bn is a big chunk of the federal budget.

24

$2k is a whole lot of money, especially if you consider that most people will immediately spend it, so other people will earn it. a dollar goes much further than only one dollar if it moves through many hands.

also, what do you think is the total cost that tariffs have cost you since january?

5

He says a lot of things. Meanwhile he's gone out of his way repeatedly to try to starve millions of people.

21

The ultra wealthy already got their 'tariff dividend', in the form of not tax breaks and a discrete heads-up of when to play the market to real maybe amounts of extra wealth.

As for the rest, this offer is just more bullshit. If it does surface (which is very unlikely) there will be some strings attached. And it will in no way fully compensate most people for the turmoil caused by these tariffs.

20

So a $2k decrease in taxes using some kind of unspecified math, while cost of living increases by triple that number.

13

"I pay $1,000 more a month per rent than when trump first took office, pay 20% more taxes but he did send me a one time check for $2000"

Also the news should compare it to similar promises like "free fertility treatment" that he abandoned as soon as the news cycle was over.

4

How about "There is Zero Evidence of $2000 Trump Checks Beyond Mere Words" as the headline ABC? Christ. Or "Trump Floats Idea of $2000 Checks, Or Maybe It's a Tax Rebate, Or Maybe Nothing, Or Maybe He Just Says Shit and We Eat It Up Every Time. Who Cares? Just Stay Scared and Don't Change That Dial!"

12

I’ll take it the way I took his stupid ass signed pandemic check. It’s not gonna make me hate the fucker any less, and I’m not stupid enough to think the amount of money the average person has lost on these fucking tariffs is less than $2000. So yeah, pay me to keep the same opinion of you and your policies, shithead.

I donated mine 50/50 to Planned Parenthood and SPLC. I don't want his blood money.

6

Where exactly does that money come from? We end up paying more for it in the end due to inflation and it all trickles up as we spend it.

We need to raise taxes on the ruling class. There is no other way.

Yeah, I'm on SSD and don't even make enough to pay taxes to begin with, nor can I drive. If I have to shop around for insurance to replace Medicaid I'll just get denied for pre-existing conditions

2

As far as I know, those haven't been reestablished, but you can bet it's on the list.

2

This orange fuck with his grossly transparent attempts to bribe the poors

The sad part is it'll probably work.

Well this wasn't on my bingo card lol

Someone in the US care to explain?

3

He's lying, but also between healthcare costs, tarrif-driven inflation, grocery costs, and now cutting off food to millions of Americans $2000 doesn't mean shit.

11

Sure, we are dumb cattle animals. Free range chicken that think we are free. We pay them to keep it this way because real genuine human life is just way too scary. This $2000 will fund us dumb ass animal Americans to go on a spending spree to feel the freedom of escapism-lifestyles specifically marketed to us to keep us stupid to our true genuine human capabilities.

-1

His only policy is to punish Democrats. I don't know how he'll do it but I absolutely guarantee he will do everything in his power to keep assistance out of the hands of people who won't vote red.
