I know! I feel the same way about American subs and American comments! No matter what the subject matter, no matter how interesting or even not interesting it is, most of the comments will be related to America! I wish there was some button to press that could purge all mentions of any said country, especially America. Yeah, we know you’re a racist fascist shithole, you always were, so well done for catching up with everyone else in realizing this, but I’m sick to death of reading about it. Give me some non-Yankee Doodle cats to watch!

Oh yeah? Well if you don't love America, you can just leave!

(Yeah, I know, but I just couldn't resist.)

Didn't he do it in CERN, an institution in switzerland?

Although ARPANET was started by the US?

10

Yeah. The CIXP building in CERN has his original paper printed as a poster hanging in the doorway :-)

On Voyager you can block instances, communities, users, posts and keywords from appearing. I recommend adding to the list every time a new intolerant prick starts stirring shit up.

And Reddit is a sinking, stinking corporate ship. Art is destroyed. Adults are alienated. Innocent folk are stripped of their rights to speak. There's nothing left for the community but fascists, conservatives and bot scripts.

19

This comment reminds me of that time my american ass and all my american family were in america and americad all over the place with how america we were.

Use filter words. Works well in the Boost app for Android. The more Ameeican specific words you add, the more American stuff you can get rid off (congress, MAGA, Elon, Trump, republicans, etc etc). Doesnt catch nearly all American stuff, but reduces it significantly.

While true, you’d think with all the fancy algorithms social media tries to implement these days that it would use the general country and the default language as indicators. I guess that stuff only matters to them when they are feeding us ads.

16
fedia.io

I mean, sure but then it's not r/popular anymore. Any kind of personalization would defeat the point of the category. I'm sure you're not getting Indian posts in your own feed (not sure about the state of personalization on r/all).

People don't go to popular to find out what's literally popular on the site overall, they want to find new subreddits or see popular stuff they would like.

5

If they can't read it, it doesn't matter to them. That should be obvious to anyone designing a website

1

No, Indian subs appear all over r/all either logged in or logged out and on various devices and IPb addresses. There should be a language filter, easy fix.

2

If I don't agree with it then it's not actually popular. I wish the admins would consult me before choosing the r/all posts

1
lemmy.dbzer0.com

I typically lurk on All and see posts from the German language communities all the time. I don't have a clue what any of the posts mean but they seem fun. I hope the Indian subreddits are the same way.

45

I think it's hillarious that as I'm scrolling through lemmy it's suddenly like: GERFRETSWHEILEZAUHAUERFLURGEN WÜT MAUKERWARPSLPOT

Then back to english

From my previous experience browsing Reddit, the Indian subs were obvious low effort, absurd memes or shitposts. I think the only serious one I saw was religious. 🤷‍♂️

E: a word

5
lemmy.world

So you didn't see any of the political or regional ones? They have as many diverse topics as other languages.

2

Not that I remember. And I did spend some time trying to figure some of the posts out. Not sure why that was.

1

Shitpost gets updoots from everyone, serious posts get updoots from serious people.

1

I was going to make a counterargument, but you're right, this is literally the point of r/popular.

24

While there's undoubtedly plenty of racist pricks, the ability to filter out subs based on predominant language seems like a feature that already should have been available. I don't care they're there, I just don't want my pages cluttered with posts I can't read.

What a shame India doesn't have a government like China's to quarantine its people behind a firewall

Ohh man Indian government is way worse than Chinese government. At least in China the government doesn't commit crime against their own minority people

How is it racist if you don't want your feed to be filled with posts from random languages you don't understand? To most users these posts add literally nothing.

The worst is when you're looking for some kind of knowledge and the only thing you can find about it, because google is a rotting useless fucking turd, is some YouTube video with an English title, then some Indian guy is like" hello we're going to talk about ____" and then the rest of the video is in Hindi or Punjabi or whatever.

10
Lemminaryreply
lemmy.world

If the title's in English and so is the thumbnail, why the fuck is the content in another language??

11

I e asked myself that in frustration so many times as I fruitlessly trawl the web searching for useful information again.

I fucking hate google so much.

7
midwest.social

To get views from English speaking YouTube, which pays more in ad revenue, after learning one phrase.

2

Imagine how much more they could make if they just did the whole video in English.

1

At least here you can just filter the languages you understand, in case you are american that would be only one.

19

The mixing of English and Filipino or Indian is the worst. I start reading a comment and always think I'm having a stroke halfway through.

6
lemmy.world

And god, so many of them are just absolutely cram-packed with the most obnoxiously incel behavior. The actual hindi posts are not great about sexism, but they're so much better than the creepy "All women are bitches" redpillers larping in racist broken english accents that are most of what you see on the "indian" subreddits.

18

Yeah, I agree. I just check in on it to see how bad it's gotten, really.

1
sh.itjust.works

India has nearly a billion internet users. Some content will be popular on a global level because of that. Filter by whatever little corner of the world you're in if that's a problem for you. There's enough space here for everyone.

14
lemmy.world

true, but it's not like there are proportionate amounts of conspicuous traffic from Brazil or Korea which are almost overtaking many western user's algorithms (China is kind of exempt obviously)

2

Brazil and Korea have less than a fraction of the number of Internet users so they likely don't meet the threshold to penetrate an algorithm that will generally show Anglosphere users content in English.

3

Internet in India is so cheap since Reliance Jio found they could offset internet customer discounts by selling every iota of customer data that you can get a month of 5G data, 2 gigs a day, for less than the price of a big Mac. This has had, is having, and will have consequences for global cyberspace.

1

$1.85 USD per month for 2 GB/day of 5G data is pretty wild. It seems like Meta is the company that's running away with all the data. I'm all for broader accessibility, its just too bad it happened that way (though I dont blame consumers for taking it since it may just be the most affordable internet access in the world).

Friends has to be the most overrated TV show of all time. It's so painfully unfunny, and I can't help but judge a person when they tell me they're a fan.

8

I judge them for the indulgence in nostalgia and having the nostalgia in the first place

There is no limit to my judging power

1

I have a general feeling about that for most sitcoms. I won't search for it on streaming, I won't time my life to watch em, and I won't even switch to em if I see them in a channel list... but if it's already on TV because someone else is watching...I guess I'll watch? Seinfeld, Fraiser, etc

I think I did like B99 much more, but still mostly saw it when my roommate at the time was watching. Not like I have any sophisticated level of humor; my favorite comedy shows that I actually rewatch would be Futurama, then maybe other less adult oriented cartoons like Phineas and Ferb or Gumball. I'm excluding things that are comedies but also are action/storyline driven, and keeping it mostly to "episode of the week" stuff.

2
dermanusreply

I honestly can't watch most of that era of comedies. Even when they were first airing I didn't like Friends but there were others I liked.

I tried watching Frasier again recently and the laugh track drove me nuts. I got to the point of looking for an ML tool to strip the sound out.

1

I was alive and watching TV when Friends was on. Lots of funny shit existed. This is not a valid excuse.

1

I don't think I could bear for one second browsing Reddit without having the subs carefully curated to my preferences.

6

I do find it funny how Reddit and especially IMDb is just filled to them brim with Indian content they apparently think I want to see

4

Funny because this is me, and German subs on Lemmy. And it's hilarious because literally every time it happens, I re-read the headline at least two or three times thinking to myself "why can't I understand this? Am I drunk?"

4

theres has been so many indian subs and posts recently, just right after when musk and trump were railing on H1-B VISAS.

2

Lol you think this is bad, you should have seen when they still had r/Chodi

Reddit had a massive a ganges cesspool long before it took a nosedive in practically every other type of content and feature.
