My Ego Took A Bad Hit

cross-posted from: https://feddit.org/post/23098977

Got a new job in November. It's not in IT, not even adjacent. I'm not a coder, so i guess this post is IT humor rather than programing humor. Anyhow, I've been using Linux for over a decade, hacking countless devices, selfhosting, helping others etc. I proudly consider myself half a nerd. A passionate hobbyist.

My employer is modern enough to have the whole admin run online: there's a clock punching app and one for customer communication, and lastly a website for employees to look at their scheduled shifts, hours worked & salary paid.

My boss (who isn't my employer) miscommunicated with me from day zero. I got nothing from her. Whenever I asked about some technical info she either told me to call tech support or - as if begrudgingly - gave me a link or a passcode without explaining how to use it - or simply didn't reply at all.
To make matters worse, she clearly misremembered a few things, forgot about documents I already sent her, and mispelled my last name, but always blamed me.

Everything I got working was with the help of my coworkers, who aren't exactly tech savvy.

But I could not log into the employee website no matter how I tried (so many times) and so I couldn't see my upcoming shifts. One Monday I came late because of that. Of course this was perceived to be my fault. Unreliable. Too dumb to use the site. One Sunday I had to beg my coworkers to send me a screenshot of my shifts.

I now believe that my boss is actually the one who is clueless about these things. But because everybody uses Windows & Google, and all login and registering procedures are built along this path of least resistance, the whole thing kinda just works, even though nobody can trace the steps taken to get there.

It took a full month of me calling up the totem pole to figure out that all accounts require 2FA which nobody had told me - not even the web UI itself. To make that work, I had to log into a work laptop with my work account (and it worked immediately).

Afterwards we could not switch to the department account anymore because nobody remembered the login name - only the password which was taped to the laptop.

I had now "broken the computer". 2 coworkers nearly had an aneurism because of that. The fact that I had "fixed" it again after 15 minutes did not count.

In this workplace of tech-illiterate people, I am now known as the one guy who is utterly clueless about computers and must be kept away from them at all cost. Apart from feeling mistreated & misjudged, this hurts my ego more than I would have thought. But it's also kinda funny.

PS: There are more things fucked up here. Two more days and I'm out, and not looking back.

Delicate Arch, Arches National Park, Utah

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/39581181

Moderate, 4.3 mi out and back

663 ft elevation gain

Hiked 12/18/23

Flickr Album

One of the most recognizable geological features in the world, Delicate Arch is reached via a moderate uphill trail to reach the canyon it sits atop. Insanely popular for its sunset views, plan for the crowds (or avoid in winter!). Petroglyphs may be seen on a short spur at the start of the trail.

Petroglyphs found near the Wolfe House at the beginning of the trail; make sure to do the very short spur to reach when hiking. Depicts wild sheep along with figures on horseback (meaning they were created after 1600 when horses were introduced), as well as either dogs or coyotes around the edges.

Standing at one one of the pillars of Delicate Arch looking towards the other. This arch measures 46 ft tall and 32 ft wide (interior) and is the largest free standing arch in the park, and one of the most famous geological features in the world.

The large, currently empty, bowl located just beside Delicate Arch. It makes an almost amphitheater or forum setting in sandstone and provides great seating when waiting for either the sunset or your place in line for a photo-op with the arch.

Use Whatsapp or die

I have a new job in the social sector. Our boss seems to have slipped into position sideways (they did not do our work for a significant amount of time before).

I got zero onboarding when I started working there; everything I know about the organisational ins and outs I learned by asking my colleagues.

The boss seems to actively want to not inform me of things, i.e. even if I ask about something they reply in the most cursory manner or immediately refer me to somebody else. I have no idea why they do it, my guess is that they sense that they're woefully inadequate for the job, plus me being much older triggers insecurities?

For example, when I could not log into an app to see my future shifts, I asked the boss about it first but they immediately refered me to tech support. Calling them, after a while we found out that the boss had mistyped my name. Then I could log in.

Last week I was sick and waited til Sunday noon to check this week's shifts - but again I couldn't log in. The boss answered neither phone nor email. Fair enough I guess, on a sunday. Thankfully tech support was working and after a long while we found out that the app for checking my shifts only allows log-ins from within the workplace network, not the open web.

I almost missed my monday shift because of that. Boss calls me, enraged. I explained the situation. They clearly did not know that the app only allows log-ins from within the workplace network.

All my coleagues tentatively/silently agree that this boss is useless. How do we keep the workplace running, and why is it me who is left in the dark? Turns out they have a Whatsapp group. I don't use Whatsapp. They asked me repeatedly and urgently to join.

tl;dr: this workplace would fall apart if people wouldn't communicate through Whatsapp instead of official channels.
