Wasn’t there a conspiracy theory about Obama or something opening foreign military base on US soil?

80
lemmy.world

Jade Helm, back in '14/'15 was a massive military training exercise across the Southwest. We'd been saber rattling across North Africa and the Middle East for ages, so this was larger than normal but not inconsistent with US foreign policy. Just another day in the paradise of the imperial core.

But Republican influencers and spokesdorks jumped on it as an actual invasion of the territory being practiced over. Then several of the state governors chimed in, demanding that Obama halt his occupation of their states. We had a big rash of "Should Texas be allowed to secede?!" discourse. Obama issued an apology or some dumb shit. Republicans declared victory. Yadda yadda.

God damn people are fucking stupid.

"Twenty-four years after foreign nationals trained in our flight schools flew planes into our buildings, our leaders are inviting their financiers to train inside our bases. This is what happens when you gut national-security training, scrub every mention of Islam, jihad, and Sharia from the manuals, and let Obama- and Biden-era bureaucrats turn counterterrorism into cultural sensitivity class. We’re being led by officials who no longer recognize or refuse to name the enemy they’re inviting into our own backyard."

66

Nah its the Austrians. They keep insisting they don't have kangaroos but this picture I found of Hitler riding a kangaroo says otherwise. They will remain the enemy until I can enjoy a traditional oktoberfest, koala and all!

15

Not hard to figure out since they immeditaly before referred to Islam etc. being scrubbed lol

4

Ack, I keep reading that as

We’re being led by officials who no longer [recognize] or [refuse to name] the enemy they’re inviting into our own backyard.

And I'm thinking "wait, which is it? Are you upset the officials no longer recognize the enemy or because they no longer refuse to name the enemy?"

I get what they're trying to say, but it's not clearly stated.

Training bases like that are often put in remote areas where low flying and the noise doesn’t disturb that many people. Qatar is tiny and they can’t really practice at home that well.

-2

They weren't justifying they were explaining the decision making process.

It's important to know why things happen even if it's for reasons you don't agree with.

Singapore already has a base there for their F-15s, this isn't anything new so the locals probably won't care or even see the Qatari pilots.

I don't agree with any of this but I also don't think we should let the media manipulate us with bait that isn't going to go anywhere.

We need to keep pressing Epstein, everything else is misdirection.

3

22

I think having it inside the US brings some security guarantees that the base is left alone. And it might've been part of some bigger deal, Qatar buys some US weapons and they throw in land for the base in return or something.

2

I would imagine there are a hundred other options for countries that would allow a training base that's not in fucking Idaho that didn't require a plane as a bribe.

For what legitimate purpose could Qatar have to put a military facility on Idaho? And Trump and Hegseth have absolutely no legitimate reason to allow it. Clearly payback for the bribery of the Plane and future bribes.

No, if anything this is payback for the nice airplane Qatar gave to "Trump Library."

Close ally to President Trump, Laura Loomer, lamented the news after advocating that the administration declare the Muslim Brotherhood an international terrorist organization.

"Well, I guess this isn’t going to happen since we just gave the Muslim Brotherhood an air base in Idaho. So much for my decade worth of hard work trying to protect Americans from the threat of Islamic terror," said Loomer about the new base.

Lololol

"No foreign country should have a military base on U.S. soil," she also said. "Especially Islamic countries. I have never felt more betrayed by the GOP than I do now watching Islamic jihadists get away with implementing Sharia law in the US and now they are getting their own airbase where they will train to kill Americans."

Exactly what "epiditionary capacity" does the US have? They don't need permanent bases on foreign soil any more than foreign countries need bases on US soil. US taxpayers certainly don't want to pay for all this armed forces bloat.

Madison420reply

I mean the US is one of the few countries that can put like 30k dudes in country at the drop of a hat with thousands more coming right behind. It's the only reason some countries dealt with us at all.

11
lmmarsanoreply
lemmynsfw.com

Those countries can learn to take care of themselves: the US doesn't need to let them freeload by outsourcing armed services to the US instead of investing in their own. While all that US taxpayer spending to bloat the armed services isn't appreciably improving US living standards with better social services (education, healthcare, poverty & work programs) or going to foreign aid, those countries investing less in their armed services from this arrangement get to dedicate more of their spending to improve their living standards with better social services.

Alliances don't require permanent foreign bases: allies can train with & host partners on an as-needed basis when the occasion demands. US taxpayers would prefer to invest in better alternatives that appreciably improve their lives.

7

It answers why the US doesn't need bases on foreign soil & why its taxpayers don't want them either.

2

None of that changes the fact that US taxpayers don't want to overspend on armed services with their foreign bases & none of that is necessary for an alliance: they're unneeded & unwanted.

1
lemmy.today

Unfortunately, even if we could convince them to cut military spending, they wouldn't use the recaptured funds to improve American life, they'd just give it to the Sociopathic Oligarchs

That goes for both MAGAs and Dems. The Dems are no different than MAGAs, they would much rather smooch the donors than the voters.

2

they wouldn’t use the recaptured funds to improve American life

Probably not: voters get the politicians they vote for. At least it's not wasted on armed services & foreign bases US taxpayers don't want or need. The mere fact it could be spent better is enough reason not to spend it there.

It's also ironic to see some Americans whine about the military invasion of their cities while they've been doing much much worse in other countries, against international laws. It's only appropriate to surround a building with helicopters in the middle of the night, invade their homes, force whole families outside and treat them like animals when it's done by heroes finding WMDs in a country full of terrorists, not in American cities.

4
Klownerreply

To be fair, many of those "whining" also disagree with our history of international conduct.

The same people who want to "bring democracy" to foreign nations are also cheering on these city invasions.

5
pedzreply

Indeed. They are absolutely right to whine and should in fact do much more than just that. In a way it's what makes it easy to be cynical about the situation.

At least so far your heroes haven't cut power, water, and destroyed civilian infrastructure. Although apparently destroying schools wouldn't change much in terms of education.

But still. You aren't all shitty. Of course. It's just that the good people will still let this happen and even participate if you give them a reason. I'm old enough to remember the Freedom Fries. I'm old enough to remember people protesting the illegal invasion of another country by the US. See its civilians tortured and described as "collateral damage". And the people that participated in this are heroes. Veterans. Commenting here. Saying that no, the US will not invade Canada, or Mexico, or Greenland, because the population, and even the troops, wouldn't allow it. English is not my native language and I struggle to describe how fucking naive, gullible, and wrong that is.

I could easily be stuck in the US but the "lottery of life" made me born 200 km North of its borders. We don't choose where we live, or get bombed by a US missile. Some people in the US certainly also know that. I'm just sorry there isn't more of them/you.

9

We don't even have an Israeli air force base.

We have no foreign bases.

If I'm wrong about that this is the first I'm hearing of it in the 30 years of whatever the fuck this not reality experience is.

8

Singapore has had a contingent in Mountain Home since 2008. They train on F-15s.

The Qatar deal is similar it just seems they are going to have their own facility unlike Singapore which is embedded with the 428th fighter squadron.

It is my understanding that this isn't the Qatar government building an airbase in Idaho but a facility inside a US base in Idaho.

8

I'm guessing racists don't want no ay-rabs setting a base up near them, and prob feel betrayed that their orange idol would allow such a thing

2

HA! Just when you think another clown can't possibly fit in the car the fattest clown walks out and somehow takes their place.
