ICE plans to sell, hand off warehouses, including in Berks, Schuylkill, report says

A member of the group "ICE OUT of Upper Bern," which is opposed to the plans, is celebrating the news.

"We just want to thank all the people in "ICE OUT Upper Bern." We got support from all over. It's not just Upper Bern watershed, Tulpehocken watershed, people are all affected by this or would have been," said Richard Cattermole with ICE OUT UPPER BERN.

"The federal governments just gonna roll right over you. Nobody here can do anything. We got together," Cattermole said. "We got support from outside Delaware River keepers. Different people noticed and helped out and I think we had something to do with it."

How many Americans can afford high-quality healthcare? A new poll finds the number has fallen

The index used the responses from multiple questions to place Americans into three categories depending on their access to quality care and ability to pay for care and medicine. In the new data, 49% of U.S. adults were considered “cost secure,” meaning that they had access both to high-quality, affordable care and they had recently been able to afford the care and medicine they needed. In 2021, when the measurement began, 56% of U.S. adults were “cost secure.” That rose to 61% in 2022 but has been falling ever since.

Younger adults, older adults and women were among several groups of Americans that saw drops in healthcare affordability and access in 2025, according to the findings.

Off-duty officer stops elderly woman from falling victim to crypto scam

According to a social media post from the police department, Officer Stom was off duty at a local Bethlehem gas station. Stom noticed an elderly woman on the phone at a bitcoin machine who appeared visibly distressed.

Trusting his instincts, he recognized the warning signs of a potential Crypto scam and approached her to check on her well-being.

Thanks to his quick thinking and proactive intervention, Officer Stom was able to stop the victim from sending the full amount of money to the scammers, preventing further financial loss. Police say he then ensured that an on-duty officer responded to properly document the incident.

Fetterman letter expresses concern over proposed ICE facilities

“While I have been clear in my support for the enforcement of federal immigration law, this decision will do significant damage to these local tax bases, set back decades-long efforts to boost economic development, and place undue burdens on limited existing infrastructure in these communities,” wrote Senator Fetterman.

7,500-bed ICE detention facility coming to Schuylkill County, commissioners confirm

TREMONT TWP., Pa. — Commissioners only learned about the purchase of a former Big Lots warehouse for the project this week. Schuylkill County Commission Chair Larry Padora said he didn't see it coming.

"It was surprising, to say the least. When the deed came in, I was surprised on Monday," said Padora.

At full capacity, that would give the facility a larger population than Tamaqua, Schuylkill County's second-largest Borough. That would mean thousands of people in a warehouse where Big Lots had fewer than 500 employees. Padora said, right now, the facilities aren't there.

And there's another issue. Big Lots paid almost $1 million in local taxes every year. The federal government will be paying nothing.

ICE warehouse purchase in Berks raises questions for local lawmakers

U. BERN TWP., Pa. – As tensions grow across the nation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased a nearly 520,000-square-foot warehouse in Upper Bern Township — one of dozens of facilities purchased across the country expected to be converted into immigration detention centers.

The warehouse located on Mountain Road, about a mile from Interstate 78, could house up to 1,500 beds.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan — who represents Chester County and southeastern Berks County — expressed deep concern.

"Spending more than $87 million of taxpayer money on a single facility in Berks County is not just a questionable use of resources; it reflects a set of priorities that don't align with our values or our real community needs,” she said.

Johnson & Johnson announces deal to cut drug prices, new Pennsylvania manufacturing site

NEW BRUNSWICK, Nj. - Johnson & Johnson is the latest U.S. drugmaker to announce a deal with the Trump Administration to lower drug costs for customers while sidestepping costly tariffs.

Johnson & Johnson said it would participate in the government-run website TrumpRx.com, which the Trump administration said will provide consumers with "massive price reductions" when they purchase their medicines directly from the site. The company didn't say which drugs it would offer on TrumpRx.

Since September, the White House has announced deals with 14 pharmaceutical companies, including Merck and Sanofi, to lower prescription drug prices.

Those drugmakers also will offer some of their products on TrumpRx.com, the White House said. For example, Merck will reduce the price of its diabetes medication, Januvia, from $330 to $100 for patients purchasing directly through the website; also, Sanofi will reduce the price of its prescription blood thinner, Plavix, from $756 to $16, and list its insulin products at $35 per month’s supply.

Corporation for Public Broadcasting votes itself out of existence

Leaders of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private agency that has steered federal funding to PBS, NPR and hundreds of public television and radio stations across the country, voted Monday to dissolve the organization that was created in 1967.

CPB had been winding down since Congress acted last summer to defund its operations at the encouragement of President Donald Trump. Its board of directors chose Monday to shutter CPB completely instead of keeping it in existence as a shell.

“CPB’s final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks,” said Patricia Harrison, the organization’s president and CEO.

Ruby Calvert, head of CPB’s board of directors, said the federal defunding of public media has been devastating.

CPB said it was financially supporting the American Archive of Public Broadcasting in its effort to preserve historic content, and is working with the University of Maryland to maintain its own records.

Man fleeing immigration agents is fatally struck by a vehicle on a Virginia highway

Agents tried to detain Castro Rivera and the three other passengers, and he fled on foot, tried to cross Interstate 264 in Norfolk and was fatally struck, according to state and federal authorities.

DHS blamed Castro Rivera’s death on “a direct result of every politician, activist and reporter who continue to spread propaganda and misinformation about ICE’s mission and ways to avoid detention.”

Opinion | A new era in abortion services may be over before it ever really began

This past week, Republicans dialed up the anti-abortion pressure campaign on the Trump Food and Drug Administration when virtually every Republican senator signed a letter to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking the FDA to impose new restrictions on mifepristone, a drug currently used in the majority of abortions nationwide.

The senators ask the FDA to suspend further generic approvals, prohibit telehealth access to mifepristone, and immediately stop mifepristone distribution altogether by declaring the drug to be an “imminent hazard” under federal law.

The Trump administration has undertaken a study of mifepristone, which abortion opponents believe will lead to the restoration of pre-2016 restrictions that disallowed telehealth.

Supreme Court seems highly doubtful of limits on conversion therapy for minors

The Supreme Court seemed ready on Tuesday to side with an Evangelical Christian therapist who objects to a Colorado law that she maintains violates her free speech rights.

After reading excerpts of the law out loud, conservative Justice Samuel Alito chimed in that the Colorado law "looks like blatant viewpoint discrimination."

"Let's just assume that we're in normal free-speech land rather than in this kind of doctor land. And if a doctor says I know you identify as gay, and I'm going to help you accept that, and another doctor says I know you identify as gay, and I'm going to help you change that, and one of those is permissible and the other is not, that seems like viewpoint discrimination."

Hegseth says Wounded Knee soldiers will keep their Medals of Honor

Hegseth’s predecessor, Lloyd Austin, ordered the review of the awards in 2024 after a congressional recommendation in the 2022 defense bill — itself a reflection of efforts by some lawmakers to rescind the awards for those who participated in the bloody massacre on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation near Wounded Knee Creek.

While the events of that day are sometimes described as a battle, historical records show that the U.S. Army, which was in the midst of a campaign to repress the tribes in the area, killed an estimated 250 Native Americans, including women and children, of the Lakota Sioux tribe, while attempting to disarm Native American fighters who had already surrendered at their camp.

Utah governor says the motive in Kirk shooting is not yet certain but the suspect was on the left

WASHINGTON (AP) — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Sunday that investigators are not ready to discuss the motive behind the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. But he said the suspect had left-leaning political beliefs, disliked the conservative influencer and is being uncooperative in custody.

Cox said Tyler Robinson, 22, is “not cooperating” and that friends paint a picture of someone radicalized in the dark corners of the internet. “Clearly there was a lot of gaming going on,” Cox said on NBC. “Friends have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture, and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep.”

A Republican who has called on all partisans to tone down their rhetoric following the attack, the governor added: “I really don’t have a dog in this fight. If this was a radicalized MAGA person, I’d be saying that as well.”

The governor said the suspect’s partner was transgender, which some politicians have pointed to as a sign Robinson was targeting Kirk for his anti-trans views. But authorities have not said whether it is relevant as they investigate Robinson’s motive.
