Company behind Jack Daniel's says Canadian boycott is 'significant' as sales drop 62%

The parent company, (Brown-Forman Corporation), of American alcohol producers such as Jack Daniel's whisky and Woodford Reserve bourbon says sales to Canada dropped 62 per cent during the latest fiscal quarter compared to a year ago, as American alcohol remains off the shelves in many provinces.

After U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods in early March, a number of provinces retaliated, pulling American alcohol from store shelves. Alberta and Saskatchewan have since lifted the ban.

During a conference call with investors Thursday, officials with Brown-Forman — the parent company of brands such as Jack Daniel's and Woodford Reserve — noted other pressures, but said the boycott is causing a "significant impact."

Brown-Forman Corporation

Brown-Forman Corporation is an American family-controlled publicly traded company, one of the largest in the spirits and wine business. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, it manufactures several very well known brands throughout the world, including Jack Daniel's, Old Forester, Woodford Reserve, GlenDronach, BenRiach, Glenglassaugh, Herradura, Korbel, and Chambord. Brown-Forman formerly owned Southern Comfort and Tuaca before selling them off in 2016.

As of fiscal 2024 the company had gross sales of $5.32 billion and net sales of $4.178 billion.[2] The roughly 40 members of the Brown family, cousins that are descendants of founder George Garvin Brown, control more than 70% of the voting shares[3] and in 2016 had a net worth of $12.3 billion.[4]

Two in the thoughts, one in the prayers.

I can promise that my boycott on all American alcohol products will be permanent.

If it says "made in USA" it goes back on the shelf backwards.

That just hurts the retailer who may be selling off stock from before the tariffs.

Big corporate liquor store? Sure go right ahead.

Small family-owned liquor store? Don't be a dick, unless they're dicks first.

Municipal or other government-run liquor store? You already kinda paid for it so whatever

All fair points. I am neither Canadian nor a consumer of alcohol so it was just a pure hypothetical from the get go. My only thought was it might even further discourage businesses from stocking American alcohol in the first place if people are just going to shoplift it.

1

Not enough people would do that to send any clear message. Better just to leave it on the shelves.

5
lemmy.world

No. Y'all are boycotting us to hurt our sales. The stores buy product from us and then sell it to you. So, if you steal products from us, we're still getting paid because the stores will still need to restock, especially if insurance covers your theft.

If someone shit on your bottle of Jack, you wouldn't dust it off and take a swig, would you? Well, as your ex-friendly neighbor to the south, we're coating everything we touch with shit. So, let us know we're so onerous that we might as well stop shipping y'all anything, cuz it's not even worth stealing.

27

Yup. Couldn't agree more.

Canadians: whether we buy or steal American products, we're still consuming American culture.

Taken to extremes, look what swimming in their culture has wrought for them. It's on full display, every damn day now. Ask yourself if you want to be that way.

If you don't:

  • don't eat their food
  • don't drink their booze
  • don't watch their movies
  • don't listen to their music

in short: don't be like them. Take the drugged IV drip out and leave the insane asylum.

I'm all for cutting ties with Disney and Netflix but that doesn't mean I want to pirate that shit. It's dangerous goods, it's ruined a nation and it might ruin more. Best to treat it like the hazardous waste that it is and locally source our own amusement.

As the above poster says, it's all covered in shit.

4

that's reserved for those in a worse financial position than myself

2

I respect that, honestly. As a US resident I've gone to only buying liquor that was made in my state. Buying local is always smart and we're also not using so much energy shipping freight all over the world.

15
lemmy.world

It's not about the tariffs, yah dimwits. It's about the threat of annexation by an obvious megalomaniac.

I've held on to boycotts of companies like Nestle and Sony for decades, and the US is on the list now. I don't care if they manage to get rid of that shithead, they're staying on there for being fucking idiots.

'We didnt all vote for him!'

'Im in a blue state'

'We'll vote him out soon!'

Doesnt matter. The country has squarely proved that it cannot be trusted. The judgement of its people cannot be trusted. Why would we ever go back now? Fuck em.

5

I haven't bought anything by Sony in maybe 20 years, because they don't make anything I need. And back when they did, I was tired of their tendency to ignore standards and make up their own. I liked their shiny things like MiniDisc and DAT.

I used to enjoy Woodford Reserve. I stopped buying bourbon myself due to all the nonsense, stuck with Scotch. Glad to see the boycott is working.

Never saw that bottle with tRump on it before. I will never drink WR again. Don't really drink Jack Daniels. Trying to cut down alcohol anyway so probably for the best.

lemmy.dbzer0.com

Samesies. Double-fuck WF. Never again for me.

I like using different mineral waters for those tiny splashes of water in scotch. The salts in them are almost like salt on food - seasoning to bring out flavors. I had one scotch (I think Glenfiddich 15) that was almost like a rainbow of flavors came out after adding a tiny bit of topo chico.

BurntWitsreply

I’m going to have to try that. I don’t ever buy mineral water (or any water, my tap works just fine and fuck the bottling industry), but I might have to make an exception and give it a try. I’ll usually add just a touch of water in my whisky and scotch, so maybe I’ll try mineral water next time. I drink more in the winter so it’ll probably be a bit before I give it a shot, but I’ve saved your comment for future reference. Thanks for the recommendation.

2

I think that bottle is from a third party, for what it's worth

What do you mean about bourbon and nonsense?

(I usually only drink single malt from the smaller distilleries in Scotland but I've recently been given a Woodford reserve as a present)

3

I assume the fact that bourbon is an American product and we've been picking fights with everyone including canada and have devolved into fascism.

I'm sure you can get a decent bourbon style whiskey from other countries but it's a regional product much like scotch is.

The kicker in the pants is that this is a long term change. They lost that market share forever. Consumers found alternatives that they’ll stick to even if we get a new admin. They voted for this though, so I’m happy for them.

I can't find anything on it either way. There were Jack Daniels gift sets with trump on it too. No matter what, they didn't have a problem with it and offered it as gift sets at the very least.

isn't that, like, illegal (or pursuable) in the us?

if I don't hear about them pursuing it, it's the same as endorsing it. isn't that the way it works in america?

Jack Daniels Distillery is located in Moore County, Tennessee. 84% of voters in the county voted for Trump.

In the past I used to go to Macdonalds or burger king fairly often. I also enjoy whiskey and bourbon so I bought Woodford reserve.

Macdonalds and burger king, I stopped going when they kept the food the same but doubled the prices. For the same amount I'd rather go to some local artisinal burger place.

American bourbon I just stopped buying when trump started to make threats against the EU and Canada. In 2022 I visited the US, but right now I don't want to go to the US or use US products. Services I'm slowly getting away from but it takes some time.

Even if your next president is Bernie Sanders, I probably still wouldn't trust the US again. Who is next after him? Can be a trump like president again.

Where I live we have this saying, trust comes by foot but leaves by horse. It's going to take a lot of time to earn trust back.

27

I'm not going to be supporting america until at least a decade from now. IF they can show they're on a good path with no major hiccups, I'll reconsider.

of course our own country is slowly falling to the right as well, so... I'll be focusing on that first

4

I don't blame you. Trump has set a precedent how low they can go. There is no return.

I am so sorry. I didn't vote for him.

I lived in Hamilton in my twenties. It's a troubled city with some real problems (drugs, poverty, etc), but I felt right at home there.

Apparently it's become less livable for regular folks since then (artists, you see — the shock troops of gentrification).

Unfortunately Crown Royal hasn’t been Canadian in a long time.

Happily we have very many great whiskeys and ryes to consume if that’s your jam that are made in Canada, the best country on earth.

26
lemmy.ca

I’ve seen some ads, but I don’t know. Do you have any recommendations?

But Crown Royal parent company is English. The whisky is made in Ontario. Wikipedia says its production will go to the US in 2026. There’s still hope.

4

Only Trump's tariffs can stop that, now. Will the Orange-utan save the Crown?

2
lemmy.ca

Are you SURE? I've tried Shelter Point, which was okay, but only years after trying the gasoline/turpentine mix they called Glen Breton and the PTSD that followed. Sure, I'll do a Sortilège easy, but that's like a whistler ice-wine in spirits form.

2

Crown Royal's parent company is closing their Ontario bottling plant and opening it in the US. CR is maintaining its HQ in Canada and its main facility in Quebec.

Their statement was that the Ontario plant was mostly shipping to the US.

Diageo is a British firm that owns the following brands:

  • Guiness
  • Captain Morgan
  • Smirnoff
  • Bailey's
  • Johnnie Walker
  • J&B
  • Buchanan's
  • Tanqueray
  • Gordon's

It was formed in 1997 from the merger of Guiness and Grand Metropolitan

Do yourself a favor and drop blended scotches entirely. Single malt all the way.

2

The headline is a little unclear and just for clarity, the sales are down 62% in Canada, rather than a 62% drop in overall sales. The Canadian boycott is still likely having an effect, however in the interest of not just skimming a headline that effect seems smaller than first impression.

It's unclear how much the 62 per cent drop in sales translates to in dollars, but the company's total sales were down three per cent for the quarter.

12

I haven't drank jack in awhile, and didn't know about this particular bottle. As an American, fuck these twats with a rusty railroad pike. I won't be purchasing jack again.

12

Canadian whiskey is generally better than anything Jack Daniels turns out. Not sure why y'all were buying our crap to begin with.

10

meh, I don't really like Canadian whisky or bourbon. bourbon was definitely shittier than Canadian whisky to me, though

I started branching out last year, didn't like it. I'm sticking to Scotch

2
sh.itjust.works

Canadian whisky is typically rye whisky. I havent found a good replacement for good kentucky straight bourbon.

1
lemmy.world

Japanese Whiskey, just for starters. Everything by Nikka is solid and their Coffee Grain is pretty reasonably priced.

1

Japanese whisky is typically more influenced by scotch. I've yet to see japanese corn based whisky based on bourbon techniques

1

Better add a couple Mexican brands to the boycott too

On the call, company chief executive officer Lawson Whiting said the trade dispute has created "significant headwinds."

"While our non-U.S. brands such as Diplomatico and El Jimador continued to deliver growth, they were not able to offset the decline of our brands that are produced in the U.S.," he said.

8

I even went to one of my old jobs to machine some parts myself because the only company making them was in the states

8
lemmy.world

So more Jack was sold in Canada than America before the tariffs? Huh...

5

yeah the headline is worded stupidly

total sales are down 3%, the exact distribution across countries is unknown

11

I suspect the headline was written to be intentionally confusing to be more eye grabbing.

From the article:

It’s unclear how much the 62 per cent drop in sales [in Canada] translates to in dollars, but the company’s total sales were down three per cent for the quarter.

2

Total sales are down 3% for the quarter, so some very rough head math would say at absolute most Canada is 6% of sales. Assuming the entire 3% overall drop was caused by Canada.
