I still cannot believe how wrong I was about John Fetterman.

I guess but I feel like supporting Gaza genocide isn’t something you just stroke into.

piefed.ca

I don't know enough about Fetterman's past to make a judgement on how his stroke affected him, but you totally could. Brain damage can fundamentally change who you are as a person on every level, from memory to logic, or even spirituality. It can change or entirely destroy your ability to feel empathy, damping some emotions while amping up others. Strokes that fundamentally change personality like that are rare, but certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

There's a famous case of a guy who got a railroad spike blown through his frontal lobe and he basically became a huge asshole.

22

Phineas Gage if anyone wants to look the case up. Classic psychology and neurology tale.

Of course this happened before modern scientific standards and procedures were mainstream, so take everything with a grain of salt.

16
lemmy.world

Actually, that’s kinda what these neuroscientists are finding happens.

33

That tends to happen with books, but wisely applying their contents to the dome.

lemmy.world

Strokes can break your brain and fundamentally change your personality and values. Idk if that actually happened here or if he was always actually a piece of shit. It doesn't matter ultimately. He's a shithead now.

18
lemmy.today

Is there like the opposite of a stroke someone can have that can make them a better person?

2
lemmy.today

True, ego death does wonders to a person's perspective. But it does not make the base parts work better.

But it does make me wonder how much evil would actually exist, if all humans were healthy.

3

Psychedelics can help you make connections that you would otherwise not have made, which I would consider to be better brain function, but it’s an inexact science (mostly because it’s hard to get funding to study psychedelics), so in practice they don’t always do that.

I’m of the opinion that humans would not be evil if they were healthy and educated about the consequences of their actions.

2

I say this as someone with a lot of experience diagnosing and treating strokes....

You'd be surprised how cruel and violent some people can become after them.

I've seen the sweetest little grandma turn into a full on support for genocide nazi after one. More than once.

In our hate for Dr Oz, we accidentally raised up a separate monster.

Turns out both options were horrible monsters. As is tradition.

Americans still thinking they can primary themselves out of this situation is hilarious to me.

0

I mean, I thought he was the best option during the primary, that was definitely wrong. And not everything can be blamed on the stroke.

20
lemmy.today

the alternative wouldve been MEMHET oz, but oz is in a position to do more harm than fetterman right now, it was a lose lose situation.

19

hence lose lose situation. fetterman was more like a turncoat after his encounter with AIPAC. HE WAS ALWAYS pos BEFORE. stroke+aipac unmaks his true colors.

Every "conservative" is a closet narcissist. The only difference is they now feel comfortable tearing the mask off and no longer hiding behind the presumption they possess empathy or want what's best for other people.

15

Idk about every conservative. Take Trump for example.

There's nothing closeted about his narcissism.

ICE is a bunch of cowards. If they were really removing violent and scary undocumented immigrants who break the law and don't pay taxes, you'd hear about more shootouts with ICE. Instead, it's farmers and young families who are working, or their kids. It's such a pity such these cowards got such a huge funding bump.

90

Fuck ICE. The people that sign up for that sham of an organization peaked in high school and are mad at the world because of their irrelevance. Nobody loves or cares for these people. They exist to inflict pain to fill a void where a personality, ambitions, and empathy should be. They have nothing to give or contribute to the world.

He's one of those candidates that run as Democrat then switch after being elected.

You know someone's no longer talking in good faith when they use words like "inappropriate and outrageous" to describe the suggestion of abolishing a department that didn't exist 25 years ago. This is someone consciously and openly attempting to shift the Overton Window so that they don't keep getting called on to defend the indefensible.

40

John "Trump Signs Are PA's State Flower" Fetterman not talking in good faith? Say it ain't so!

My favorite Fetterman moment was when he castigated Democrats for mentioning trump's felony convictions, saying we were supposed to be the party of "forgiveness and redemption". Imagine consciously throwing away a political advantage like your opponent's crimes - it's like refusing to blink when your opponent throws sand in your eyes.

6

Jesus, John -- quit being a senator and just go record podcasts in your truck for a living.

39
lemmy.world

Abolish fetterman, he's a lunatic and pathological liar. He only won his seat cause he ran a fake campaign as a Democrat then dramatically pulled a u turn on us.

Also he dresses like a slob, grow up fAtterman

29
lemmy.world

I'm 100% with ya until the dressing part. I don't care how people dress as long as they get the job done (see Zelensky). Now, he is a fuckwad for running on one platform and flipping to the other, but that's unrelated to his dress code. I remember thinking he was a good one for not giving a shit about appearances and only about making people's lives better.

21

Zelensky's outfit is very deliberate. Before the war he was clean shaven and wearing full suits like any other national leader. His beard is short, but groomed, and he typically wears fatigues or hoodies. In either outfit, his clothes are in excellent condition. It's a good balance between looking professional and showing his people that he's right there with them.

13
Okokimupreply

I don't think he ran a fake campaign, I think he had a stroke and it changed his personality. We don't realize how much our brains create who we are.

19

I mean he was already a nepo baby prick pretending to be blue collar. And he very clearly had issues with people of color and firearms.

But I think the stroke made him feel more emboldened to not have to listen to others or made him more over confident in his own mental fortitude. It sure makes it look like he never intended to actually help anyone, and I think he would have just hid it better pre-stroke.

4

I guess I shouldn't ever run for office because I hate wearing suits and don't respect the office or the government enough to make myself uncomfortable for those assholes.

Wish there was a 25th amendment for senators. This dude’s brain is melting out his ears

17

Nah, I think the whole progressive thing was his wife’s influence.

I’ve met too many assholes from York county who are just like him.

19

Alex Jones just had a caller that was asking how to get his undocumented wife on the list of the “good ones.”

Pretty sure its his cognitive decline secondary to his stroke.

Your brain stops working and you become republican.

40

It’s interesting that having a stroke decreases your empathy, and as a result you become r.

2
lemmy.world

So we should have let the Republican win?

How the fuck are we still this stupid?

It's the same dumb ass "Democrats aren't doing enough for Palestine, so I'm not voting for them" bullshit even after we've seen time and time again how that works out.

Take a look around at your actual options. Those are the choices. Not some mythical candid in your head. They have to be on the actual fucking ballot and not just in your dreams.

Also, Fuck Fetterman. He's a selfish, backstabbing piece of shit. This isn't about defending him. It was still the least shitty choice. That's where we are.

19
lemmy.world

Yes. If a Democrat refuses to comply to basic demands show them they will not be allowed to win.

He run against a person that calls itself doctor Oz. Do you think that ghoul would be better in any way whatsoever?

8

Fetterman votes with every Republican bill. What would be the difference except showing Democrats that these candidates are not deserving of winning?

2

He's unfortunately not. Just a liar and a prick in a time where we are easily fooled because of our few good options.

6

I was honestly excited to vote for him. I had a bumper sticker, which is something I hadn't done since Kucinich.

Gisele should primary him.

1
lemmy.world

If his wife really is an immigrant someone should report that. Maybe a lot. Just so ice has all the info.

13

She's apparently a good person who's as outraged at his behavior as the rest of us, so maybe don't do that.

3

It says the wife "WAS" undocumented. I don't care enough to look up what happened there.

13

Bitcoin mining rigs would all become thousands of AI instances and people would be touting how many votes they got...

You think that replacing trump, even with Tim Apple, would be a bad thing????

1

At this point, I don't think having a green card matters anymore.

17

It takes years even if you're legal. If you've committed any kind of crime, including working or being here illegally without a visa, you'll get denied

5

From my personal experience, working is not necessarily an issue. As our lawyer put it, "everyone works, so don't stress about that". The things they seemed mostly concerned about were whether or not you entered the country legally, if you've overstayed your visa for reasons that would exclude you, and issues with the law.

Some methods of entering the country are harder than others when it comes to the approval process, such as tourist visas.

For a moment I thought this was ProgrammingHumour and a funny response to calling someone's code undocumented.

Then I read the full post.

No need to abolish ICE, just return it to what it was in 2015 or so.

We don't need essentially a whole new authoritarian police with more funding than any other such agency ever and more than two branches of the military, with ability to grab anyone at all with impunity (no due process required if they claim to think the target is not a citizen) and seemingly working to be able to also remove citizenship formally from people.

1

I respectfully disagree with the first statement, we need to dismantle all authoritarianisms. That also means dismantling any ability to seize and grab power.
