They should start going back now. Do Morrowind next.

Morrowind remake with Bloodmoon, Tribunal, and new additions on a map larger than Skyrim, in a self-contained portable VR set that also works as a handheld and PC. I will pay $10k for that if I have to live in a cardboard box.

lemm.ee

Tamerial Rebuilt, the Cyrodil mod, and the Skyrim mod, with either the Script Extender or with the OpenMW engine will do all of that for you.

Morrowind's lore and artistic direction was far superior to Oblivion and Skyrim. I will fight people who disagree with this (not physically though, that hurts).

Absolutely. But at the same time, the base game is not all that approachable. Remake Morrowind with a proper combat system but leave the rest of the gameplay as is. I mean the lack of quest markers and everything. It's awesome the way it is. I'll buy several copies.

18
lemmy.myserv.one

I enjoyed the lack of the quest markers. The thrill of exploring the wilderness, trying to find the location, and the haunting cries of a Cliff Racer.

9

the haunting cries of a Cliff Racer.

... for 30 minutes as it slowly slowly descends to your elevation to fight.

The AI pathing could use some help, I'll admit.

9

It's prefect as is. The Cliff Racer terrorizes it's target with the screams as it slowly moves in for the kill.

2
lemmy.ca

Agreed. I remember hanging the paper map from the box on the wall beside me as reference while playing.

3

That paper map was a masterpiece, and honestly, it's hard to imagine playing without it. It had all of the regions and major settlements labeled, but that was pretty much it. It was up to you to figure out where all the fast travel routes were, and there were so many tiny little details that were clearly something, but that were left completely unlabeled. If you wanted to find out what they were, you'd just have to go out and find them.

I'm struggling to remember anything else in gaming that tickled my imagination quite like that map...

4

Well if the pattern is to be followed, we have three more oblivion releases, and 3 more morrowind releases. So that’s like a decade at least

32
lemm.ee

They already have Daggerfall Unity.
I kinda wonder if that had something to do with the decision to do Oblivion.

7

No. Bad. Stop it. New games only. You can go play Morrowind yourself already.

I swear to fuck if this post cancels Morrowind Remastered there will be consequences

28
lemmy.ca

Morrowind was the best of the series. I would love to see it remastered and the mods ported.

16
lemmy.world

It's the only RPG I've ever played where I FELT like a destiny changing force of transformation

4

It was the lack of handholding. Between modular armor, spells and enchantments without guardrails, lack of leveled lists, diverse lore/region based loot, and other things like shopkeepers having a physical inventory you could steal from, you had a kind of freedom and respect for the player that the later games failed to replicate.

There was still a lot of funkiness to it of course between graphics, bugs, severe lack og QoL features, and just being an older game. The chunk loading was miserable, especially on console where you'd walk a few minutes then load just as long. For the era, however, those drawbacks were forgiveable.

1
lemm.ee

Of the entire series, this is the only one I've always been holding out for.

5
lemmy.world

They don't have the creativity or the engine capability to recreate morrowind unfortunately.

I'd love to be proven wrong. But I won't. I don't want Morrowind in the Skyrim engine. I want to fly.

25
sh.itjust.works

To be fair, the remaster used UE5. Bethesda is apparently not above some engine fuckery, and there's also remade engine for morrowind in the form of OpenMW. Do I know what I'm talking about here? No, not at all, but if someone explains to me why I'm wrong I'll be all the smarter for it, so fuck it. Posting this.

13
lemmy.world

The remaster used unreal 5 for the graphics and creation for the game logic. It's still the same shitty creation engine it always has been

17
sh.itjust.works

Well, I guess that's a step up, somewhat. Starfield ran like hot garbage on my steam deck, so I'm glad they did that.

I can't blame them for using the same framework. Porting a game between engines sucks 7 tons of ass, especially when it wouldn't even more their biggest project happening at the moment, and the bigger project uses the old engine most likely.

5

Yeah, I tried to learn to use unreal once. It got me 500gb of tree models that made my computer hotter than hell.

In actuality, though, it does run at a solid 30fps on deck. The textures are fucking disgusting sometimes, though.

4

It's already being done. Look up TESR Skywind. Probably won't be done any time soon, but it is coming along nicely.

2

given how you can use jetpacks in starfield and fallout 4 i hope they bring back flying. probably wont be as insane as morrowind though

1
lemm.ee

Just play OpenMW. It may not be "pretty" like the new Oblivion (and holy fuck, I don't care, I have the original, why bother with the new one?), but OpenMW lets you play Morrowind on anything, including phones. It's a complete and faithful recreation of the entire game and all you need are the original game resource files.

I'm putting my bets on Skyrim Remastered before we see Morrowind or TES6.

Or maybe a skyrim-(or fallout-)based battle royale shooter, i could see that being very likely too.

A roguelike metroidvania with soulslike mechanics in the TES universe

Maybe a farming sim mechanic is in order, and "cozy aesthetics"

People are going to make mods to bring back the older graphics.

21

If you think that's crazy someone cracked the game within the first hour of release

2

lemmy.ca

Yeah no kidding, imagine spending 70 cad on a retextured game

2

Maybe if I didn't already buy the game on Xbox 360 and pc

1

The remake trend has been going on for a minuet now and a lot of once great game companies are now just stagnate. Blizzard is another one that comes to mind. If you want new and better games I think you need to start supporting indie games and projects like Godot that make indie game development possible.

11

Oblivion Remastered is fucking awesome though. Blown away it manages to maintain what makes it fun, quirky, and bad and add new fun, quirky, and bad aspects to itself. It has genuinely been a blast to the past as someone who is now an adult that started playing Elder Scrolls as a teen.

I would love to see Morrowind next. Hate all you want Bethesda absolutely picked the perfect Elder Scrolls game to remaster.

10

I don't get the hate. If a game is fun to play, then I'd much rather have the option of playing it with better graphics. People ITT are acting like the existence of remasters prevents new games from being made, which I don't believe is actually the case. The bulk of the work on Oblivion Remastered wasn't even done by Bethesda developers, but by an external company that specialises in art production.

I wish they'd do a proper remaster of Might & Magic VI in a modern game engine.

6
lemm.ee

Meanwhile, for those of us who want a new game to play...

This is why AAA sucks. I haven't been excited about a game release in fucking years. It's just the same shit they already released over and over again. They "announced" ES VI over 6 years ago. Not a word since then. Which means at least another 2-3 years minimum.

3

It was made by a different studio though. This isn't stopping a new ES game from being made. Instead it's allowing them to onboard new devs better so they can help make the next game either better or faster.

lemmy.world

Who asked for this? Can bethesda just make a new game ffs. They have been releasing skyrim for a decade. Dont get me started on Space skyrim, that gets good after the first 12 hours.

Come up with a new engine, a new concept and just make a good game.

(I am aware they have made more games, but putting dishonored aside, they arent good games. I mean they made redfall ffs)

0

Space skyrim gets good after 12 hours??

I pirated it and i still felt like i got a bad deal.

Stopped after a few hours to find mods that could make Atlantis trees look less awe full, never bothered to go back.

10

They published it. My mistake

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethesda_Softworks

Look under games published.

Bethesda game studios, apparently the game development studio under bethesda softworks appear to have only worked on elder scrolls games, space skyrim and fallout. Which is even worse and further emphasises my point.

I don't understand why people are talking so much about a has-been studio's remaster of its worst entry to the series. anything to avoid making tes6 I guess.

-7
sh.itjust.works

I'd call you a killjoy, but I'm still having a lot of fun with it, so you obviously didn't succeed. I guess you're just boring then.

4
pyrereply
lemmy.world

not as boring as tes4 but yeah never said I was exciting. weirdly defensive by the way, I don't know what's supposed to be "succeeding" here: you either agree and aren't playing, or disagree and are playing.

-1
Revieverreply
lemmy.world

because you are calling something shit which other people enjoy dude.

1

yeah it's called having an opinion. idk why gamers can't handle it. death threats for 7/10 reviews and shit. you can just move on without getting personally offended.

I understand making a case for something you enjoy for people who don't, maybe give people a perspective they might have not considered. but notice how neither of you gave any reason why tes4 isn't the worst in the series. because it is.

it has Patrick Stewart though so that's not a claim a lot of games can make.

-2

I meant keeping people busy with old games so they don't ask about the next one but yeah of course it's better than bgs handling anything.
