This is hard.

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender + The Legend of Korra together. Don’t even get me started (actually please do).

  • Pantheon. Dense, proper sci fi, criminally and tragically suppressed IRL. Watch it, right now.

  • I am really loving Severance so far.

  • Arcane is up there, maybe as most artistic.

  • Star Wars: Andor. Not a huge Star Wars fan, but it’s so good, and grounded. It has everything.

I have a lot of "secondary" favorites I am excluding here, like The Expanse, Person of Interest, Fringe, The Americans, Narcos, Mythbusters, and such for various reasons, but are still amazing.

+1 for Avatar. Such a phenomenal cast of characters and world building. Korra got really weird but I still appreciate it.

I love LoK, honestly more than ATLA, for many reasons. Along those lines, I was more into ATLA for Zuko than the Gaang.

Easily Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's mystery, sci-fi, action, drama, and period pieces (holo deck episodes). It has a bit of everything. Plus it's a hopeful vision of the future.

Bob's Burgers hands down. It's just constantly showcases the wholesomeness I want to see in the world.

It shows a constantly imperfect world, and family, friends, and community standing together to survive it.

I could write a thesis, but I'm crying thinking about that Christmas episode now, you know the one.

10

Fringe is so underrated.

…Have you seen Severance? It feels more condensed, and I am loving it so far.

Star trek the next generation and deep space nine Battlestar Galactica The Orville

Yes, I'm a sci-fi nerd

Also "the good place", it's awesome

9

Ah the expanse, of course! Awesome, though the last two seasons went down in quality. Especially the lady season was a mess only surpassed bu game of thrones season 8

1

I’ll take the original Battlestar Galactica. As a kid, it blew my mind.

I've seen Archer far too many times. Funniest animated I've ever seen and I kinda want to watch it again. Gotta stop when the writers change at s10 tho.

Patriot is an amazing TV show that I've seen three times. It's a thriller, I guess. Quite funny but they play it straught. Reminds me of Fargo.

Edit because how on earth did I not mention True Detective season 1.

These three shows I will definitely watch again when I get time. Amazing attention to detail in each of them.

There are many great shows that could take the nr 1 spot but SG-1 just has a special place in my heart. At least up to 8th season.

1

Some that come to mind, and merely in order I thought of them:

  • Danger Five
  • Green Wing
  • Blackadder
  • Clone High (Edit: should probably be AtlA, but I'm holdin)
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • Inside No. 9
  • The Wire
  • Atlanta

Only finished shows considered, as a poor ending can ruin a show.

5
  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
  • Avatar the Last Airbender
  • Firefly

These shows always make me feel good when I watch them.

  • Bob's Burgers
  • Mash
  • Star Trek Voyager
  • Derek
  • Trollied
  • Corner Gas
  • Reba
  • Would I Lie To You?
  • Taskmaster (UK)
  • The Simpsons

  • The BSG remake series is the GOAT
  • TNG and Voyager. (Never got into DS9...too much religious hibbidy-jibbidy and scenery chewing from Sisko...come at me, bro.)
  • Stargate Atlantis (And of course SG1, though on the whole I think Atlantis was the superior show)
  • Bojack Horseman (Because I credit that show for finally getting a handle on my own mental health)

And yes...I realise the hypocrisy of not liking DS9 because of its religious hibbidy-jibbidy, but calling BSG the GOAT. I have no answer for you. Maybe the Bajoran religion itself was just stupid.

3

BSG… Big Scary Guy? Boobs Sex Guns? Beavers Selling Green? Brave Snew Gworld?

No offense, but your post reads like a military dudebro’s war story. Introduce initialisms the first time, please. I knew a few of them through context clues, but not everyone will.

2

I always enjoyed how the few encounters shown with The Prophets/Wormhole aliens were nearly completely divorced from the Bajoran religion and the teachings of the Kai. It was a nice commentary on how religious leaders can pervert a religion to their own agenda.

Psych. A cliche “murder mystery of the week” show has no business being as wholesome, kind, friendly, and upbeat as Psych. I realized a few years ago when I was going through some personal issues and had started rewatching Psych that it was helping me deal with the stress, and it wasn’t the first time I’ve done that with the show.

Maybe a year ago I went to Psych’s first convention near Chicago. It was both surprising and reassuring to hear other fans go up to ask the actors questions and they all shared similar stories to me. People have used to show to help them briefly escape from challenging situations from dealing with the death of loved ones all the way to someone using it as background TV while trying to study in medical school.

One of the few things I miss from Reddit is the active Psych subreddit over there.

Also, the 80’s references are fantastic.

3

I find it interesting how many people I've seen on Reddit (just started using Lemmy) say psych. It's not my favorite, but clearly there's a very positive sentiment.

1

Hard to pick, so here are a bunch I love:

  • Game of Thrones (until it got bad, but the early seasons were amazing)
  • True detective season 1
  • Attack on Titan
  • Pantheon (Second season is on youtube)
  • Breaking Bad
  • Better Call Saul
  • Bojack Horseman
  • Fleabag
  • Altered carbon season 1
  • Rick and Morty (early seasons. Maybe 1-4 or so)
  • Invincible so far

Twin Peaks.

Failing Twin Peaks, then Sapphire and Steel.

Twin Peaks was amazing. I wish broadcast TV hadn’t chickened out of Mulholland Drive.

1

They messed with Twin Peaks as well, insisting that Laura’s murder be solved earlier than Lynch was planning, and then of course cancelling the show leaving Lynch trying to reach some kind of conclusion.

That first series though was sublime and perfect.

2

Ghost In The Shell, Haibane Renmei, and Gurren Lagann share the #1 spot for animated

Psych takes 1st place for live action

2

Haibane Renmei,

You're one of the few people I've heard talk about this one. It was a unique story and world and was very powerful to watch. I almost feel like it never happened because no one knows about it.

I always want to rewatch HIMYM because I do remember enjoying it but I get one or two episodes in and I loose the taste for it because of how bad it ended. Really only one of a few shows truely ruined by the ending.

Front Up

A street-interview show from Australia which showed an amazing cross section of society.

An excellent interviewer who keeps the flow going, and gets people to open up about themselves.

25 years old and a little dated, but is still super interesting and absolutely charming.

I have a few, but each in their own categories.

  • Reality - Departures - A show where three fellows in Canada give up everything to travel the world together for a year, documenting their journey. One year becomes three. It released me of all my anxieties about leaving the comfort of my home and is now a gem of a series I keep close by. Shout out to Andres Dupuis, Justin Lukach, and Scott Wilson for being such a huge inspiration.

  • Live Action Drama/Comedy - Scrubs - The best medical drama out there. It is so well written, so impactful, and so enjoyable to go through. It helped me come to terms with my dad's passing.

  • Live Action Sitcom - Friends - 10 seasons of ups and downs, laughter, and tears. The show definitely told us life was gonna be this way. Can't go wrong with this classic.

  • Animated - Futurama - Another contender for one of the best written TV shows out there. It's so perfectly complete.

  • Anime - Log Horizon - I'm a long-time fan of both .hack// and Log Horizon. Both are incredible series. But Log Horizon is maybe a bit more compact and easy to follow for outsiders and is generally a more casual watch experience while still having solid continuity across the series.

I gave up on this one when it switched focus to the kids in the (2nd or 3rd season). Did it get any better afterward?
