This minus the pills. I have a smart watch that clearly shows that I don't recover well if I go to bed late, but I always go to bed an hour later than I should ideally go, and always end up sleep deprived. I desperately need to cut this shit out.

Love the death analogy. Don't we all have periods of just wanting to sleep to escape reality, but we fear non existence through death

4

Depending on how you die the process can be horrible. I guess dying instantly from some kind of trauma is the easiest way to go. I have to believe the "unknown" is irrelevant because our consciousness no longer exists. Whatever atoms made us a human are simply reabsorbed into the universe. Neil deGrasse Tyson the astrophysicist has some great insights into this. If you check him out on youtube you find his speculation about god and human death

Wow this thread makes me comment multiple times, and I feel shittier and shittier the more comments I relate with.

8

Life is sitting. Sit up in bed, sit in car, sit in office, repeat until bedtime. And if you think about it - laying down is really just the advanced/ultimate form of sitting.

3

Comfort Eating.

I don't drink. I don't smoke. I tried weed and found it uninteresting and never did anything harder. I exercise regularly.

But I'll still never be the platonic ideal of a "healthy person", because whenever I'm sad, I need processed sugar to feel like a person again. And brother, does life give me reasons to be sad.

36

Samesies. I remember back in college powering through a writing assignment with a 2L bottle of Coke and a 1lb. bag of M&Ms. Totally not healthy, but I learned later that it has to do with the relationship between insulin and neurotransmitters, like dopamine.

I think I need to read up on that link more.

Yea, I was pretty bad at that. Like I think it was almost 9 months between changes and I was living in Australia

9
lemmy.world

That's once a year💀. Buddy, even my lazy ass couldn't take it that far. I'm talking usually 2-3 months. I would only change it if i was having... company... Iykwim

14

Same, but my company required an international flight so she didn't get to visit that often.

4

Add me to the unwashed bedsheets club lmao

It's just so much of an ordeal imo

is it that you couldn't remember to? or you knew but didn't bother anyway?

1

do they really need changing that often though

i don't go to bed covered in mud so all my sheets get is a bit of occasional sweat at night, i don't get why we should change them so often. they don't even smell!

1

That and having to constantly check myself for just being human and not being the beacon of perfection I was supposed to be.

6

I eat too much.

It would be too little sleep, but that is society's fault for putting early risers on a pedestal and not being accommodating of night owls.

6 pack of beer almost every night for the past 3 months. Doctor refuses to help me unless I go to rehab, but it's not feasible to spend that much time away from home.

13
RBWellsreply
lemmy.world

Husband was drinking 3-4 a night and I was freaking out about it, he got it down to 1-2 by not buying it in packs except on weekend. Like he will stop at the corner store and get one beer for after work.

If you buy only one on your way home, instead of a six pack, do you think you would go out and get more, or might it work for you as it did for him?

9
Kitreply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

I managed to quit for a week by buying one at a time plus a six pack of non alcoholic beer. Trying it out again today.

Good luck to you! A beer, a healthy supper, a walk in the night before bed. You can build healthy habits not just unhealthy ones. Do things to replace that beer. Yin yoga is really relaxing too, good bedtime practice.

Usually I'd be three in by now. Instead I mopped my floors and walked the dog. Eating a big salad now. Trying my hardest rn.

8

Awesome, that is great progress no matter what. Practice is what matters. Take care of yourself. Not kidding about the yin yoga - slow and cold, with pillows, it sort of tricks your nervous system into feeling safe.

5

Naltrexone (either the oral version or the monthly injection) can be started while someone is still drinking. Might be worth asking again or talking to an addiction medicine specialist.

4

Vaping, doomscrolling, not eating healthy, binge drinking sometimes. The usual

I clench my jaw day and night, like constantly. Not intentionally, and I wear a mouthguard to protect my teeth at night, but I'm not really in control of the clenching and it causes downstream effects. Some mornings I can't open my jaw all the way. I had the feeling of water trapped in my ear (I thought it was from using the pool at the gym), but the ENT told me it was from TMJ. At least a couple times a week I end up with a headache that starts in my jaw and teeth, radiates up my sinuses, and on really bad days, results in light sensitivity and blurred vision.

Caffeine increased my muscle tension. Muscle relaxants counteracted it. Now off both, taking lots of magnesium.

2
klemptorreply
startrek.website

Sorry if this is too personal, but I've heard magnesium can cause diarrhea. Does that happen to you? Also, what kind of magnesium do you take, and is your bruxism related to anxiety?

1

I've heard magnesium oxide is the most diarrheic and least effective otherwise, so I avoid that. I take magnesium citrate, carbonate, hydroxide, acetate, malate, bisglycinate, taurate, gluconate, or whatever combination of them happens to be cheap. Never tried threonate because it's so expensive.

There was even more anxiety with caffeine, so yeah, related.

This is the 80th comment and no one has said "drugs" (unless you count alcohol). Maybe drug addicts have better things to do with their time than browse lemmy!

11

I think we should count alcohol, tobacco and vapes as drugs. They're controlled substances, after all.

2

Comfort eating. Before I got adhd meds I had zero impulse control, so I'd eat nothing or eat everything. I would be 75% through a giant bag of snacks, and I'd be actively not enjoying them and wanting to stop, but I just couldn't. I'd stop and put them away and ten seconds later I'd be back eating, even though I was feeling sick and gross.

On meds, that's stopped and I've realised that my craving for snacks is all about comfort, stimulus, and self regulation, and nothing to do with hunger. But even knowing that, I struggle to bother with other harder but healthier ways of stimulating and relaxing, when I could just eat crackers with thick slabs of salty butter, or alternate between dark chocolate and salty peanuts. It's not the worst, but I'm very conscious of that it's not really about the food and so it feels like a lot of empty calories just to chill me out a little.

Addicted to casual sex, mostly anonymous. It's a huge health risk but I can't stop

9

My homecooked meals aren't healthy enough! My eating habits are too salty with too little vegetables.

Yeah, I'm somewhat of a health nut otherwise.

9

Y'all know about Tostito's Queso in the jars? I go through a tall jar per week. I'm sure the strong, hazy IPAs are also not on the healthy food pyramid.

Over the years having supported one party or the other I can tell you that it's all about people wanting power over others and then ensuring that they keep it. Their reality is totally different than the reality we, the 99%, live in that they can no longer even relate to us. There is no chance that they would actually understand the issues that affect regular people and then offer solutions that would actually solve those issues. Best advice is to simply try to enjoy life. Have you ever been a big fan of a sports team? They lose and you get depressed? Politics is no different. The players of the team that you admire couldn't care less about you and neither do politicians of either party. They only tell you what they think that you want to hear so you will vote for them and keep them in power

the connection between politics and sports tells me youre a well-off white male.

I understand that you have no threat of material loss when the wrong 'sports team' is in power, many people will actually face the consequences of the elites actions though.

I understand if you want to ignore this fact, but it is a fact.

Actually a Black Male who has never received one dime as a government hand out. Parents taught me not to be jealous of others and just get educated. I did. Since my college degrees were in fields that employers valued I didn't find it hard to get a job. I was hired for my skills not the tint of my skin. I've found that people who like to be victims believe what politicians actually can turn them from losers into winners. People can cry all they want about how awful life is but each individual can achieve a productive successful life if realize all they have to do is tune out all the bullshit and apply themselves. I realize that most people don't want to hear stuff like this because getting educated is hard work. Being a victim is easy. And interestingly no change of government at either the federal or state level has ever had a significant plus or minus effect on my life. But those who are victims always seem sure that a change in political control is going to be a horror show.

Golden Loxreply

a black male should understand greater than anyone that systematic and economic oppression (made by governments and corporations) are the the things keeping people from 'getting educated and a good job'

edit - realised i am trying to have a reasonable discussion that posts about fucking their gfs mum

0

It must be a burden to have all the right answers for everyone. What insight it must take to be able to tell a Black Male what they should think. I feel honored that you would take the time to correct me. As a Black Male how I could I possibly know how non black people have determined how I should think and "feel".

Systematic and economic oppression are the forever excuses for those that embrace being victims. There is a big world out there of non White people who are successful because their parents told them not to believe the bullshit of forever racism.

Yes to some extent. But I have found reddit to be all about the hive mind. You read some of the stuff over there that you know for sure is bullshit. But if you dare call it out, then the hive comes to attack you for daring to point out their bullshit

1

Absolutely, but I just use Reddit mostly for my sports, music, and video game communities, I don’t do basic news or politics over there. I’m simultaneously trying to have some of those communities active over here too but there doesn’t seem to be much interest.

2

I browse all and usually find groups that I had no idea even existed

2

I've gotten into the habit of eating and drinking things fast because of limited time on break and now my digestive system is in terrible shape

6

Bad sleeping habits and eating high sodium food, besides that I don't drink, smoke, consume sugar, or do drugs, so I'm good.

6

Still smoking while drinking but now only drink 2 days a week and then completely dry the other 5 days

Sitting at my desk at work is probably the biggest health risk I face.

I eat well, exercise, drink moderately (not every day, never more than two, almost always one drink only), don't smoke, have sex every day, manage my blood pressure, really try to be good to my body and do things to reduce anxiety but the enforced idleness of desk job is for sure unhealthy.

It's fantastic, I never thought any guy could keep up without feeling like I was too demanding or something. My ex was a once a week guy and I thought frustration was an unavoidable state. But husband wants it every day, more than 10 years in now. Sometimes twice, LOL. It's one of the things you have to make time for. I prioritize sex and exercise because if you don't, life and work will expand to fill that time.

2

Damn. Congratulations are in order. I can definitely go on a multi-day stretch if allowed, but eventually I need a break. Not a long break, mind you.

2

Was smoking but thankfully I quit that before kids. Currently it is sleep. Both kids are night owls and I just want an hour of computer time at night 😜.

Craving sugary drinks. I tend to get a big craving late afternoon. I try to stay away from sodas mostly, but I still wind up drinking sweet tea or lemonade, and an energy drink a couple days a week.

4
RBWellsreply

Unsweetened black iced tea mixed with lemonade has half the sugar, enough caffeine to help, and tastes really good.

2

Hard to narrow it down to just one. I'd say it's a toss up between my eating habits and weed.

3

Tossup between how much caffeine I drink and not working out.
