Cool Bug Fact #47

Reply in thread

We have near analogies that are close enough for us to have an idea. Anesthesia, being knocked out, dreamless sleep are closest to what we would consider "experiencing" oblivion. We can correlate the lack of experience or consiousness to the what we "experienced" prior to existing.

I get what you mean though, we can experience a transition out of and into non-experience, but cannot, as a matter of course, experience non-experience. There is no good reason (by my measure) to believe that there is anything other than just non-experience in the before and after phase of life. To the individual consciousness there is no discernable difference either. The matter/energy you are made of existed prior to and will continue to exist after you are gone, all that will be left is your memetic and causal imprint on our small bubble of reality.

Even Hitler did not manage to get the Gestapo set up until 4 months after he was appointed as chancellor. It has only been 3 weeks. Auschwitz was not set up until 7 years after his rise to power. Though the first concentration camp, which I imagine was more mild, was set up after a few months.

It feels like you are arguing in bad faith.

If I am getting ready to go hiking in an area where there may be bears, I don't say to myself, "I am not currently being attacked by a bear, so I will probably not need bear mace." In this analogy I like hiking (living in the democracy that I was born in and served to defend) therefore I will not choose to just not go hiking (leaving).

If you died tonight and people had to sort out your stuff, what would be the weirdest, most unexplainable trinket in your possession?

I don't have to read fairy tales to refute that they were real events that actually happened. I would tend to agree with your overall sentiment, but if someone was raised non-religious, had to take history classes, and had a light exposure to different mythological frameworks, I would not say that they are uninformed if they claim to be atheist. I dont have to do a deep dive on Christmas lore to come to the conclusion that Santa is not real.

What's your kinda-unimpressive 'claim to fame'?

I used to do a very niche job (that does not exist anymore) that required great skill, and I was so good at it, I was likely in the top 10 of all time. There were less than 1000 people qualified to do this job, and I was in the top 1%, AND those ~1000 people were the only ones to ever do this specific job out of the ~8 billion people on this planet.

Now I work a relatively mundane IT job, and no one knows or cares about what I have accomplished, except for my peers.

AI data centers face increasing complaints about inaudible but 'felt' infrasound — citizens complain high- and low-frequency sounds do not register on decibel meters but cause adverse health effects

Reply in thread

Alright so I watched him break down the data at the end, and the best that this proves is that it should be studied further to verify his experiments. Thousands of people should be studied in universities all over the world. My own distaste for datacenters not withstanding, if those future studies indicated and even maybe found the mechanism for these issues, that would not translate to datacenters ought not be built. It will and should be translated to a public health and engineering problem. We put shielding on nuclear powerplants to protect people from radiation, and we can likely do something similar to prevent infrasound, if the claims of some papers and this youtuber are proven to be correct beyond a reasonable doubt. This whole thing just stinks of "wifi sickness" and I am highly skeptical 🫤
