Lorena Bobbitt Cut Off Her Husband's Genitals After Years of Alleged Abuse. Inside Her Life Today

Lorena, who now goes by her maiden name of Gallo, still resides in Manassas with her daughter and partner of over 20 years, according to TIME.

She is an advocate for domestic violence and the founder of the Lorena Gallo Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, intervention and awareness services in Prince William County, Va.

“One of my missions is to educate the public and young women about the red flags in dating an abuser. I go to colleges and talk to sororities,” she told TIME in 2018. “I volunteer in local shelters for victims of domestic violence in northern Virginia. I’m a facilitator. I’m not a doctor, I’m not a psychologist — but we teach them to set boundaries, so eventually they end up figuring out the answer themselves.”

Lorena has also been involved in several of the projects that tell her side of the story, including Prime Video’s 2019 docuseries Lorena, which was produced by Jordan Peele.

NASA, with the tampons.

Reply in thread

In a 2002 oral history interview with Rebecca Wright, then coordinator for the NASA Johnson Space Center History Office, Ride was asked what items NASA had added to her flight kit, including the tampons in question.

"I remember the engineers trying to decide how many tampons should fly on a one-week flight; they asked, 'Is 100 the right number?'" Ride recalled, according to the transcript. She replied that, "No, that would not be the right number."

"They said, 'Well, we want to be safe,'" continued Ride. "I said, 'Well, you can cut that in half with no problem at all.'"

NASA engineers apparently had a history of sending women to space with inadequate supplies. In that same interview, Ride noted that the engineers had also decided that women astronauts would want makeup. So, they designed a makeup kit.

"The engineers at NASA, in their infinite wisdom, decided that women astronauts would want makeup — so they designed a makeup kit," Ride was quoted as saying in a January 2018 tweet shared by the NASA History Office.

It is not uncommon for astronauts to head to space with their own personal hygiene kits, which have been issued as standard equipment for astronauts since the 1960s. These kits typically contain items like a toothbrush, lotion, deodorant, comb, and razor. But in a predominantly male field in the 1980s, experts apparently had limited knowledge in the types of hygiene items that would be necessary for a woman.

The optional — and unused — makeup kit included eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, eye makeup remover, blusher, and lip gloss. It went on display in the Human Spaceflight at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, in 2002.

What a fascinating little piece of history! They even designed a makeup kit smh. Thanks for the rabbit hole!

How to stay hygienic w/ sensory issues

Just want to second all of this advice. Make showering as pleasant as possible - I use podcasts the most. I'll even bring in my coffee or a cold beverage and reframe it as "spa" time.

Also showering every other day, as long as you're not in a super hot climate, is usually plenty to keep yourself at normal levels of cleanliness.

Millions of Women Are Left Out of Menopause’s Moment

Reply in thread

“The messaging about HRT is so positive and all-consuming right now,” Ms. Maylone said. It seems like “you can experience this phase of your life totally differently, and there is relief,” she added.

“I feel totally cut off from that,” she said.

Rebecca Hastings, 46, cannot take hormone replacement therapy because it raises the risk of blood clots, which she is already more likely to develop because of a genetic mutation that she carries.

At a recent family party, she started commiserating with another woman about perimenopause symptoms, which for Ms. Hastings have included night sweats and hot flashes. They were half-complaining, half-laughing when the woman became serious: She had wasted two years suffering before starting hormone therapy, she told Ms. Hastings. It had fixed everything.

“I immediately lost connection and felt isolated,” Ms. Hastings said.

As a woman on the receiving end of these posts and marketing and friends, it really does seem like the overall and only answer to perimenopause and menopause is HRT. And not only that, but managing symptoms through just diet and adding a fan to the bedroom is difficult and doesn't provide the type of relief that HRT can.

Doctors don't have much guidance for other ways of managing the symptoms either. So much of this knowledge is still being passed from woman to woman.

Jamie Davis Smith, a 51-year-old writer and adjunct professor in Washington, D.C., said her doctor advised against hormone replacement therapy because she is at increased risk of stroke, but has not suggested any alternative ways to treat her symptoms, including brain fog that often causes her to lose a word midsentence while she is writing or teaching.

Ms. Maylone said that when she tried to raise the subject with her providers, she hit a wall. “Through no fault of their own, they’re like, ‘We’re trying to have you not have cancer,’” she said. “It just feels like you hit a dead end.”

There is a “humongous provider knowledge gap” when it comes to menopause care, said Dr. Rajita Patil, director of the Comprehensive Menopause Program at UCLA. While demand has exploded, many clinicians are still not up to speed on the full range of treatments, including nonhormonal options, she said.

I'm bisexual so I really only feel qualified to assert that definition.

I believe that pansexuals are attracted despite gender. I dunno, I can't tell the difference between the two. I'm just old and bisexual feels like it fits better for me.

The house always wins

Monopoly was originally called "The Landlord's Game" and it was invented by a woman in 1903.

It was meant to illustrate the dangers of unchecked capitalism.

Then it was stolen by a man and turned into the game we know today.

TIL The location of the G-spot is typically reported as being about 50 to 80 mm (2.0 to 3.1 in) inside the vagina, on the front wall

The existence of the G-spot as a distinct structure has not been proven, nor has the source of female ejaculation.[4][5] Although it has been studied since the 1940s,[2] disagreement persists over its definition and location.[4][6][7] The G-spot may be an extension of the clitoris, which may be the actual cause of vaginal orgasms.[7][8][9] Sexologists and other researchers are concerned that women may consider themselves to be dysfunctional if they do not experience G-spot stimulation, and emphasize that not experiencing it is normal.[5]

The lack of study of women's anatomy is abysmal.

The clitoris wasn't fully anatomically described until 2005.

Another woman gave her an easy out if she wanted to take it - that's all. The woman didn't accuse the man directly of anything and she apparently left them alone once the offer was refused.

It's bad that it is so commonplace for this to happen that women feel the need to look out for one another in this way. I wish it wasn't the way the world is, but it is and it's not bad to try to protect each other.

You're not smart. You're not helping. You're paranoid weirdos.

Do you often express this sentiment to women trying to avoid being sexually assaulted and raped?

Court restricts abortion access across the US by blocking the mailing of mifepristone

Reply in thread

A federal appeals court has restricted access to one of the most common means of abortion in the U.S. by blocking mailing of prescriptions of mifepristone.

A panel of the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is requiring that the abortion pill be distributed only in person at clinics.

“Every abortion facilitated by FDA’s action cancels Louisiana’s ban on medical abortions and undermines its policy that ‘every unborn child is human being from the moment of conception and is, therefore, a legal person,’” the ruling states.

Pretty much. It's the 5th circuit being assholes again.
