I just want to say that I really appreciate your post. I’ve wondered about this and the comments have been enlightening.

If autism is a spectrum, does that mean everyone is on the spectrum?

This. My college psych professor said, “It’s only a disorder if it interferes with your daily life.”

In your country, what "common" animals are tourists most excited to see?
Chipmunks. I once went to a zoo in Chicago with someone who grew up in South Africa and he was more fascinated with the chipmunks running along the paths than with anything else at the zoo.

Tips for getting rid of cat sand/litter smell?
We use a pure-clay, non-clumping litter for that reason. I hate the chemical smell of the clumping litters. I’ve also heard really great things about wood pellets.

I usually borrow audio books from my library. You could check to see if your library has that option.

Professional help?

Yes! Interoception is considered the 8th sensory system and ties in with the sensory processing differences common in autism. An occupational therapist familiar with interoception can help. Kelly Mahler has some good resources (and a whole curriculum for sale, but look for the free stuff).

This was some informal “research” I did with my family a friends a few years ago. It seems to be consistent with the published research I’ve found about pencil grasp variation.
I know all of these people, some of them have autism or other neurological differences, and there was no correlation between pencil grasps and neurological differences.

Can I remove a scar by cutting it open and then healing it?
If the scar is new, massaging it frequently (using some type of serum or oil to reduce friction) can help reduce the size and how much it is raised.
If it’s more than a year post-injury, only a plastic surgeon could help.
(Info from brief training on scar management in grad school and doctor’s advice after having stitches.)

My mother once handed me the manual to a dishwasher to prove that I was loading mine “wrong.” Turns out I was doing it the way the manual recommended. She had never actually opened said manual.

TIL 36 states require voters to present identification to vote at the polls on Election Day
Reply in thread
My state (republican trifecta) requires a signature at the polling place that matches your voter registration card or photo ID card. I assume they can audit these if there’s a question.

This is not that bad! See my other reply to OP, but this one is actually pretty common. Holding it closer to the base of your thumb (“in the web space”) and pressing down harder with the end joint of your index finger (“distal interphalangeal joint hyperextension”) can limit how much precision your have with very small movements and make your muscles fatigue faster if you write or draw a lot, BUT it adds a lot of stability, which is why a lot of people use these modifications.

I wish "they" would separate "fantasy" from "romance fantasy" genre.
Reply in thread
I also hate romantasy and am a high fantasy fan, but Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorite books. Magical realism, that I wouldn’t have assigned into a romance category.

looking for earplug recommendations
Downbeats sells a “smaller fit” set that I like for their noise dampening in stores and other crowded settings, and they don’t hurt my ear canal like a lot of in-ear plugs. They’re less than $15 on Amazon.

Most people think specifically of photo ID when they see this. In Oklahoma (republican trifecta), you have options, including your voter registration card. I’m assuming there are variations in other states, as well. https://oklahoma.gov/elections/voters/proof-of-identity.html
