thick skinned employees, how can you be so thick skinned?
Sounds like to me that maybe its not about how thick their skins are but about not taking the job personally. If you view a job just performing a function for money and just focus solely on the job it would look the same. Ignore other peoples drama, personalities, work ethics etc. Just do the job and focus on that ignore the drama, the gossip, and focus on doing your job well.
I manage staff and my best employees would seem stoic but really they just had focus, good work ethics, and a kind of get in and get out mentality. No gossip, no hanging out with their coworkers. Work was work then go home.

What is a product you would never recommend?
A phone plan with a phone. You pay more over time and you get stuck with a contract.
Buy a phone and get a plan from a MVNO. Your monthly plan will be better and cheaper. Also since you own the phone when a better plan appears you can just switch.

Any good Telegram alternative?
Just a heads up about people’s suggestions on signal. If you don’t open your desktop client often and it needs to be logged back in it will not sync your latest notes to self messages (perhaps other messages too).

Multinationals of Lemmy: How do you deal with names across borders?
I dont have a multiple passports but i come from an English speaking country and live in a S. Korea. Here your name for almost anything needs to reflect your official government documents or else you are in for a whole world of inconvenience.
My name here is . But here is the kicker apparently the government name system is case sensitive even if when docs are sent to me they appear all uppercase. It was through much trial and error that i discovered my middle name is not capitalized. This caused trouble opening bank accounts, importing things, getting a phone, etc

What are your self–hosted alternatives for inter device communication?
Everyone else mentioned most of what I would suggest.
One is missing for your original problem. Localsend. Think airdrop but cross platform. Super useful if you have a mix of devices (iOS, android, windows, etc…)

Ever bring up the wrong subject around the wrong people?
Yep, here’s an example. Was out to dinner in South Korea with a group of people the day President Yoon (the guy who called martial law then rescinded in less than 24 hours) was impeached. I raised my glass and pronounced a toast to his impeachment. Turns out half the table was pro Yoon and pretty upset about it. Whoops

I'm new to lemmy, came from reddit. What's the lemmy etiquette like? How different is it from reddiqutte?
Similar to Reddit. Everything here seems to be more tech oriented and most communities are much quieter than reddit.
Also be prepared to follow the same topic/community across multiple servers. Reddit is older so the default community for a given topic had been established. Not so much here

Can one take advantage of lower subscription fees when residing abroad?
Yes you can via a VPN and an “address” in that country. I wouldn’t recommend doing this with your primary google accounts though since you are working their system some they might retort in some way.

I like it but just not on a Pi. I found it too unstable. I found it easier to host in a docker container.
Although these days i just use blocklists on my router.

Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s?
If you want kids, don’t put it off for too long. I waited till my late 30s because I was never ready. Here’s the thing you will never feel completely ready. As long as your life is basically stable (job, housing, and no serious issues) you will be okay.
Kids are hard but super rewarding. If you have them young then you’ll get to see them as adults in your 40s. By the time my kids are adults I’ll be pushing 60 and hoping that I live long enough to meet a grandchild.
People have successfully (shades of grey here I know) been having kids for a long time. You’ll never feel “ready” but rest assured you’ll figure it out.

What's the weirdest thing you have ever seen on someone's phone or computer?

I also worked as a computer tech at a university. Often i had to backup someones drive to cds or dvd depending on the situation. If a folder was too large we would ask permission to go into it to break it into smaller chunks. I began to loathe having to subdivide large photo folders onto cds. Way too many times of opening a folder of smutty pictures.
