It's just the reasonable cost of protecting profiteering companies that don't want to invest to become competitively efficient produces of quality goods and services. Everyone should be able to get behind that.

AI doesn't need to build Skynet to destroy humanity. There are more insidious ways. Less obvious. More harmful. It isn't clear that AI will provide a net benefit to society. Even if it does, it is already obvious there will be a lot of harm.

Meanwhile, AI companies get a free pass to steal every work online.

If it's not consistent, it's not justice.

The logical conclusion is that Marco Rubio believes every aspect of the US political and legal system has essential personnel that are involved in genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes or the crime of aggression, which are the crimes the ICC pursues. He is well positioned to know such things. It would be well to heed his advice.

It's not just Meta. It's capitalism driven by financialization with sociopaths at the helm. It's not an error. It is essential. Whatever changes they might make to increase their profits, they will not include actually caring about employees as human beings. AI might produce memos that better conceal the callous exploitation and fraudulently proclaim caring, but it doesn't care either.

AI is just one of several serious existential threats the kids will have to deal with. They're far from alright.

He mentions the economic and environmental aspects of AI but I think dismisses them a little too quickly. While AI as a tool can clearly provide many benefits, the external costs (i.e. costs not directly born by the project but incurred by others/society as a result of use of the tool) should not be ignored.

And I don't see mention of the seeming expropriation of works without compensation by the AI developers and the as yet unresolved IP aspects of using AI. These are part of the big picture economic impacts but also have moral and possibly legal implications.

In short, I think there are reasons not to treat AI as merely a tool.

Angela Lipps spent nearly six months in jail in Tennessee and North Dakota after being misidentified by Fargo police through AI facial recognition in a bank fraud investigation.

It was July 14, the day a team of U.S. Marshals arrested Lipps at her home in Tennessee. She said she was taken away at gunpoint while babysitting four young children. She was booked into her county jail in Tennessee as a fugitive from justice from North Dakota.

Lipps would sit in that Tennessee jail cell for nearly four months. As a fugitive, she was held without bail. Lipps learned, following a Fargo Police Department investigation, she had been charged with four counts of unauthorized use of personal identifying information and four counts of theft in North Dakota.

Officers from North Dakota did not pick up Lipps from her jail cell in Tennessee until Oct. 30 — 108 days after her arrest. The next day she made her first appearance in a North Dakota courtroom to fight the charges.

"If the only thing you have is facial recognition, I might want to dig a little deeper," said Jay Greenwood, the lawyer representing Lipps in North Dakota.

Greenwood immediately asked Lipps for her bank records. Once they were in hand, Fargo police met with him and Lipps at the Cass County jail on Dec. 19. She had already been in jail for more than five months. It was the first time police interviewed her.

On Christmas Eve, five days after the interview with Fargo police, the case was dismissed, and she was released from jail.

Unable to pay her bills from jail, she lost her home, her car and even her dog.

Another life ruined by a dysfunctional 'justice' system, with no consequences to those responsible and no compensation for the victim. How is this acceptable?

No problem. Restore the rule of law and basic human rights for everyone, including getting all the corruption out of government, and The White House in particular, and I, personally, would welcome American booze back on Canadian shelves. Not that I would ever buy any...

Not crazy, but the cool air from the crawlspace has to be replaced, probably by warmer air from outside. So you are cooling the attic but warming the crawlspace. Heat rises. What's the insulation between the crawlspace and house? You may be cooling the attic but warming the house. The attics I know are all vented to/from outside. I would be more inclined to put the cool air from the crawlspace into the house, rather than the attic.

And don't forget the other common modes of attack: election interference, kidnapping and assassination of political leaders, funding and providing arms to militant groups to destabilise and foment regime change, piracy and direct military invasion of sovereign nations.
