Coming along nicely

Based on the wild inconsistencies in the tenons, this thing certainly seems handmade.

I've got it mostly disassembled and sanded up to 220, debating between tung oil and shellac.

I'm also thinking of reinforcing the bow-back/seat joints by jamming some toothpicks into any gaps and then saturating with glue as much as possible. They aren't in terrible shape, just loose and I want to fix the laxity.

Overall I think things are going well so far

Restoring toddler chairs

Picked these up on marketplace for $20 yesterday, planning on regluing as many joints as possible, sanding, and hitting them with some shellac.

So far, I've gotten the legs off one, but i THINK the round portion of the back is attached to the seat with wedged tenons, but it's hard to tell because of how old and beaten up the wood is.

If they are, any tips on disassembling wedged tenons?

I'm thinking if they're still adequately glued, too just leave them alone, because i can't think how I'd get a glued wedge out

Mystery suds

Hello everyone, I was in my basement a little while ago and saw this pile of soap suds coming out of what I believe is the sump?

This hasn't happened before, but i think it's relevant that we've got a baby so I'm washing a fuckton of bottles and using a fuckton of soap. Could that cause this?

If it's not that, how concerned should I be? Thanks in advance

Newborns fucking suck, actually

My partner and I had our second a few weeks ago and I received a number of 100% genuine (and appreciated) "have fun with the kiddo" and "enjoy this time while it lasts" messages and you know what? I fucking hate the newborn phase.

Lack of sleep makes me angry, and the entire newborn phase is a red tinted haze of fury. Here i am in the middle of the GODDAMN night rocking this fucking potato for 45 fucking minutes and it's just staring at me without blinking having the time of its goddamn life. My fucking feet hurt, I'm getting fat because food is the only thing that brings me the tiniest flicker of happiness, my partner is frankly a raging bitch and I'm sure I am in return, the toddler loses his mind at the drop of a hat, and I'm supposed to enjoy it?

Nothing about this is enjoyable. I hate every fucking second and I can't wait to sleep train this goddamn barnacle who I CAN'T EVEN HELP CALM BECAUSE I'M NOT THE ONE BREAST FEEDING and I guess that means the only person the baby will relax with is mom. Being helpful and competent are core aspects of my self image, and this mindless sack of shit has robbed me of that.

I'm so fucking tired.

Pain au Bacon from FWSY

A departure from the norm, but i had a pound of bacon without a purpose.

I loosely followed the recipe, probably doubled the amount of bacon fat it calls for and mixed the final dough in the morning rather than at night, but overall the process was pretty similar.

It smells fucking fantastic, as you'd expect bread with a pound of bacon and a handful of bacon grease would 🤷

Gonna make some killer breakfast sandwiches tomorrow

Defending plants from an asshole squirrel

I've wanted a butterfly weed plant for years and this year I finally just decided to buy some small ones and remove any guesswork. That night the idiot squirrel that lives on my property dug them both up, so this is my solution to protect the new one i was graciously given for free from the same nursery i got the others.

I used like ten 6" landscaping staples to anchor the wire, and if the squirrel gets through that I'm gonna lose my shit

First foray into ducting

Context: we just moved, have a toddler my wire is pregnant AND sick, and I'm just recovering from the same bug.

With that said, this is the result of 30 minutes of reading the international building code, 30 minutes of trawling various home improvement forums, and two hours of actual work. Once I return the tin snips and some other stuff, probably cost around $100.

Oh, I replaced it because the old one was entirely foil and had poor air flow.

Lemme know what you think or if there are any glaring errors

(I still need to tighten the screws and clip off excess)

Also, joints are arranged so the inner duct faces with the direction of airflow in all but one connection, between the foil and rigid duct. I'm also pretty sure the hose clamp there isn't necessary, but i had it and figured it couldn't hurt.

FINAL additional info, straight sections were closed and sealed with the aluminum tape as well

Bribery might work

We need another body to help move a couch into our house, and there is road construction like 200ft down the road, so my partner is gonna ask one of them if a loaf of bread and twenty bucks will be enough to get them to ditch work for 5 minutes and help

Recipe is the tartine country loaf, but i altered the flour ratios a little. 920g AP, 40g WW, and 40g of wheat germ because it makes bread smell otherworldly.

Keeping a gift secret

My family moved up north recently, and given my wife has always loved Austin, TX since we lived there, I decided to get a housewarming gift for her.

I found an art shop in Austin and got a print on canvas of the skyline looking down south congress.

I knocked it out of the park and she's gonna cry immediately and i don't feel bad at all

Just letting it out because I'm proud and excited and can't tell her

First batch after moving

After moving cross-country, my wife said I needed to make some bread ASAP for some friends, so I cheated and got a starter going by sprinkling like five grains of active dry yeast in a 50/50 flour/water mix, then repeatedly starving it over about a week to try and force it to become a different culture than straight commercial yeast. Overall seems to have worked out just dandy.

Recipe was, as always, the tartine country loaf, and I actually followed the recipe this time. Only issue is the new oven runs a bit hot, so these are a few shades darker than i normally aim for.

Bench top question

I'm taking an ash tree down on my property next week and I'm gonna build a work bench with it. I want it to be a hefty boy, so I'm going the roubo route.

Question is, since I can ask the mill for specific cuts, is there any reason I shouldn't just get one monstrous 6" slab from the middle of the trunk and use it?

This is a liverwort.

I found this liverwort growing up against some landscaping bricks at my house. I've taken thousands of pictures of moss, but this is the only wild liverwort I've seen

I don't know if saying something is cool moves beyond the appropriate dullness, but........ it's cool

I like taking pictures of moss and it's relatives because it forces you to slow down and look at very small details, and there's a whole world of complexity right under our feet, you just have to look for it
