This edition of PC Zone Magazine cost £4 back in 1995. The cover CD had 1,000 Doom levels and IIRC a bunch of modding tools. I probably got 1,000 hours of entertainment out of it and often think back marveling at the value for money!

Of course all this stuff is available for free online nowadays!

I found Cal Newport's book Slow Productivity really helped me get some perspective on work. It has three main lessons: Do Fewer Things, Work at a Natural Pace and Obsess over Quality.

Yeah the intelligence is still in the model. The promise of symbolic AI is about logic programming/ formal semantics not recursive loops.

To a large extent the idea has failed because it proved too hard to get non-experts to represent systems formally.

I still think there's potential value in a hybrid approach - e.g. get language models to do the representation then let them use formal reasoners/ verification instead of hallucinating.

Submerge them in brine for a few weeks. This creates an environment favouring lactic acid bacteria which will create pickling acid from the veggies that prevents mould.

You need to keep them submerged which you can do by putting a freezer bag full of brine on top.

I think the title is an exaggeration. The problem is that Rust's regex module doesn't support "look around" patterns. It seems like the fancy_regex create extends support for this.

I'm inclined to agree that OS-level age verification declaration is pointless and invasive but I'm sympathetic with distros looking to comply with the law. I can also see why governments want to pursue identity verification to enforce laws online even if this is obviously not the right way to achieve that.

I want to see Linux become the mainstream choice and accept that it will need to be compatible with laws like this to do so. Were Linux more widely used then organisations like the KDE e.V. might even be consulted by lawmakers which might help avoid this sort of legislation being passed in the first place!

I'm also hoping that this can be solved for those in California with some sort of optional service rather than something that gets too closely integrated with the distros or desktop environments.
