Public access is what is in immediate danger. Private services are safe from bots, but at risk from attacker on your network - a compromised IoT device or package on server could move laterally to vulnerable PHP services

AI PCs aren't selling, and Microsoft's PC partners are scrambling

I think it's just bad marketing. Microsoft, as they often are, just messed up their marketing strategy with mixing controversial and creepy stuff like Recall and actually useful things like local TTS and STT, translation, image recognition and manipulation stuff. All these ML functions offloaded to an NPU are good additions to an OS. Computers with NPU don't have to be Copilot+ branded to be useful.

82-year-old YouTuber grandma was raided by police and SWATs during her live stream last night where she plays Minecraft to raise money for her grandsons cancer. Authorities brought 20 police cars

In my state there is a law that makes false call to 911 a criminal offense. If someone says "there is a bomb" on such call, that makes it more serious offence because this will cause public alarm. If the person making such call is stupid enough to do it from their phone, they will likely be identified and prosecuted. And people doing stupid things tend to be that stupid.

I'm not sure about damages caused by the raid, though. SWAT doesn't know if the threat is real or not, so they can't be held liable. Probably the victim can sue the caller, if they've been found...

Thoughts on privacy focused smart glasses?

Smart glasses with HUD and speakers, and bluetooth, no cloud dependency - yes, please.

With camera - absolutely not. This would be just a hidden recording device, absolutely capable of intruding other's privacy, regardless if it's cloud connected or not. I realize that camera provides a lot of functionality, but I just don't see the way how it can preserve privacy of other people and fit in glasses form factor.

Being responsible with powerful technology starts with knowing who is using it.

The fuck it does. Claude is already censored - you can't get a recipe of a poison, schematics for a bomb, an advice on how to hide a body. If you can, then it's Anthropic engineers didn't do their job.

Knowing who is using it helps either with conditional censorship, or helping governments to track people based on their prompts, or just plainly lying and using data for analytics and training. All these easons are shit.

And don't tell me this is to protect the kids again. Let the parents do their job.

I'm only an adult because I'm 40 but I feel like a child. Is anyone as lost as I feel now?

You probably need to figure out what do you want. There is nothing wrong to be alone, not have family or kids. Unless it bothers you. There is nothing wrong to rent a home. Unless it bothers you. Figure out what you want, how the future in which you want to leave looks like. If you can't, maybe talking to a psychologist worth a try - decide what problem you are trying to solve, book a few sessions, see if that moves you towards your better self.

Financially, I agree with many on this thread - keeping all $100k on a savings account is one of the worst things to do with your money. Keep a couple of months of expenses on savings, put the rest to work. CDs are mostly safe, and help offset the inflation. Buying home isn't a bad option, and if it's just a place for you to live, don't consider it an investment depends on location, but you'll likely save on monthly payments vs rent.

Once you figure out what you want from your life, talk to a financial advisor to set realistic financial goals and decide on home purchase or investments.

What are your latest privacy wins ?

My big win (in the making) is that I'm going to file my taxes completely offline. Working on the documents in isolated VM, using tax software offline, and sending paper forms wherever I can. Unfortunately New York state is not accepting paper forms, as far as I know...

FOSS Alternative to Privacy?

I'd love to have that, but such a service has to comply with government regulations and payment systems requirements in order to issue virtual cards that are generally accepted. I can imagine a company that would open source their code, but what benefit would it be for you? You can't self-host it and you cannot audit their infrastructure to confirm they run exactly the same code they publish... You want trustless finances - go crypto and say goodbye to convenience and wide acceptance.

Otherwise, you have to trust a middleman. And if we are talking about trust, privacy.com looks trustworthy. They have paid plans, so it doesn't look like selling clients data is their business model. They clearly say they don't sell users data in their privacy policy, which makes them a potential target for lawsuit if they caught lying. They haven't been caught on anything nasty. Good enough for me. You do you.

Forgejo v15.0 is available

Well, before your response, v11 was the latest LTS release, received security patches and did all I wanted it to do. Now, I actually did look at the new release and found out that 15 is a new LTS. So, thank you! I guess it's time to review the breaking changes and get prepared.
