At least on Google devices you still can sideload apps, and fairly easy TBH. My biggest annoyance is the "you can't buy stuff in apps without giving us a cut" which fucked up stuff like ebook apps etc

Steam is big in there too. It makes sense for both companies because they make their money from content.

If an animation or game development team/studio can produce better quality content, cheaper and faster, that just means more money for the company providing access to said content.

Not only that they have the money, but Google is actively working to lock down their streaming platform (YouTube) against third-parties and they have basically yanked the rug for their OS platform, while adding requirements for developers to sideload.

Their entire direction is antagonistic and in opposition to the core concepts of FOSS

Microsoft is deep into the vibe coding now, but even before that it was cheap devs who could write somewhat functional code but had little concept of optimization, amidst a sprawling bloated OS that has only grown fatter over time.

The mentality of RAM and storage are cheap has suddenly come to a screeching halt but it's taking to take them a long time to find talent that can actually fix the mess they've already built, especially as they try to grab more AI crap into every nook and cranny of their product line.
