Name them

We have a jewelry store in town that is by appointment only. During the day there's always a high end car parked at the back of the store but you never see anyone in there. When my buddy was getting ready to propose he tried calling to get an appointment and it went straight to voicemail with a message that said private clients only and then beeped. He left a message but never heard back. I've never met anyone who has seen anyone go in or come out of that place.

My mom put herself through nursing school by working at a nursing home. Once I was an adult she opened up about some of the stuff she saw, she said there was so much sex that they joked about installing a hose in the hall so they could separate patients when they caught them. When I asked her why they didn't just look the other way and let them have their fun she said they actually did but the administrator was a hardcore Catholic and told them they were to separate them as soon as they were caught.

2001, Dre's album drops, nobody has it yet. In walks the kid who has a T1 line and a 5 disc CD copier with a spindle of discs. He sits down in homeroom, puts the spindle on his desk and says Dre's new album five bucks right here.

He sold out before the end of the day, made a good amount of cash, and was racking it in for months getting people albums that they requested because none of us could get it work with our slow connection. Of course when the two competing ISPs upgraded their networks later that year, he lost the majority of his business, but for a few months he was our pirate savior.

In 1st grade I couldn't spell worth a damn, the teacher told us to write "in the future I want to be" then write what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wrote mine, handed it in, and later that day my parents got called in.

After a parent teacher conference they called me in and asked me to read what I had wrote, I read exactly what I was told to write them looked at them confused about what was wrong. The teacher calmly stood up walked to the chalkboard and wrote future, then explained that the word I had written was a bad word and I need to remember how to spell future. Later in the car I asked my parents what was the word I wrote, and they said it's a bad word. After nagging all the way home my dad snapped and said "you wrote fucker, it's a bad word and don't ever say say it".

I'm 41 now and they still bring that one up from time to time. Turns out when the teacher went to the chalkboard she was trying to avoid looking at my parents who were trying not to laugh, and that was making her laugh, so she turned to the chalkboard to get herself under control.

I have written several proposals for my employer based on this kind of thinking. We have some kind of issue, I push it to the back of my mind, weeks later the issue still exists and I'm listening to a totally unrelated podcast and something the host or guest says triggers a series of seemingly unrelated thoughts and suddenly I have a solution to the issue.

My department head once asked me how I come up with these solutions, I smiled and said I have ADHD and listen to podcasts. He just looked at me with a blank stare then said that doesn't make sense. I just laughed a little and said, I know but it's hard to explain how things connect in my mind, the podcasts just help me brainstorm. He just smiled, shook his head, and said well what ever works I guess.
