Sidebar AI use rules: good, bad, ugly?

For the most part I don’t think a community as slow as this should have much in the way of moderation. The fewer restrictions, the better. We are all adults here (well, probably).

Content-free clutter like OS playground fight memes and “Look! I, too, have answered the Steam survey!” posts is an exception.

And if somebody’s talking to us via an LLM, that’s (in my own dramatising-prone opinion) disavowing what makes us special among animals (apart from our infinite capacity for conscious cruelty): Language, reasoning, imagination, creativity, self-expression, personal flair and style.

AI-generated code is unknown territory for me. The people using it sometimes seem to know pretty damn well what they’re doing, in principle, even if they’re not quite doing it themselves. So I’m not in favour of banning it outright. But, as with the parent reddit community, I have set a “two months of verifiable development time” barrier.

What do you think? Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Too lenient? Too strict? Just vote or make alternative suggestions. (I haven’t got the energy to discuss this again…)

PS: I do miss the old banner but it was AI-generated back when that was still fresh & weird & interesting to play with… now it’s more like a plague

[self-promotion] My debut album: Written in Rust

Hello world! Finally finished an album a few days ago! It’s a slow-burn electro-post-industrial darkwave kinda thing with very sparse vocals for exploratory listening; dark, but more viscous/haunted than vicious/aggressive…?

That just sounded more advertisey than I’m comfortable with.

A n y w a y… you can find it here, and also there:

Nethack 5.0.0 is out!

While I prefer Dynahack these days for the more luxurious TUI and additional content, Nethack has been one of my favourites from as far back as my Amiga days. Once you realise you can at least try to do anything with anything¹ (use the * wildcard character when asked for an item), the game opens up in ways most RPGs just can’t.

¹ use a wand to write in the dust, train a pet to steal from shops, throw potions at monsters, eat (or refrigerate) slain monsters to gain their abilities, rub lamps just in case, wash the ink off scrolls, use a credit card to unbolt doors…

Civilization VII Linux and Mac ports announced

As per the linked FAQ,

What platforms will Sid Meier's Civilization VII be available on?

Sid Meier's Civilization VII will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam (which also supports Mac and Linux) and the Epic Games Store.

The Steam store (preorder) listing shows all three platform icons so I’m guessing they’re not just talking about making it work with Proton.

No mention yet of Aspyr (who ported Civ 5 & 6) as far as I can see.

Dimhaven Enigmas: upcoming native adventure game (Steam demo)

As reported by GamingOnLinux, the folks behind the modern Myst-like Quern have a native Linux demo out on Steam for an exploration-heavy first-person adventure game called Dimhaven Enigmas.

There’s a Kickstarter with tons of additional information.

In an age of native Linux support getting dropped or passed over I hope it goes well for them.

And if you’re into that sort of thing, Quern is currently 80% off. (Though it’s also 80% off if you’re not into that sort of thing)
