Japan Is So Desperate to Increase Its Birth Rate That Tokyo Is Trying Out a New Idea: Free Daycare

Reply in thread

Daycare/Kindergarten is already free across the country for all children starting at 3 years old.

My information might be biased towards the greater Kanto area (Tokyo/Yokohama), but I'm not aware of anybody paying less then 20000 Yen (a little over $100 USD I guess) per month per child for a place in a public daycare (can be more than double, depending on the area/daycare, and much more for private ones).

It's much more complicated, though. You can receive various support money from the state/prefecture/city, but it's usually less than what you have to pay. And you're not guaranteed a place, and the waiting list cam be long (especially in highly populated areas in Tokyo).

What are your feel-good games?

I like to replay The Last of Us (1) every couple of years - though it's always emotionally taxing.

Other than that I enjoy diving into Ultima 7 every here and then, though I tend to lose sight somewhere along the road, so technically speaking it doesn't fit the original post... but it's much fun/relaxing, following certain quest lines or just exploring.

Oh, Air Traffic Chaos on the DS is sometimes on the menu as well. Though I usually don't play it through, just some missions (i.e. airports and difficulties).

Pfsense, Opensense and OpenWRT - what's the deal?

Reply in thread

They what and what?? Generally the Omada-stack devices are just on-premises hardware that you control. If you enable automatic firmware updates, then yeah, "if they push a bad update" and all (similar to a Linux distro with auto updates enabled). To improve operations, and enable certain features, there is the "cloud-based controller" software (appliance), which is named weirdly, because it generally does not live in the cloud - you can self-host on-premises, though its core software component is a black box and not (F)OSS (also available as an actual hardware appliance). There have been instances of the devices "phoning home", though you might be able to limit that to some extent with firewall rules.

[Playstation Lifestyle] PS5 Ports of Acclaimed Adventure Series Leaked by Rating Board

According to a recent leak, it seems the first three entries will receive native PS5 ports.

Life is Strange Remastered, Life is Strange: Before the Storm Remastered, and Life is Strange 2 Complete Season have all been rated by the ESRB for the PS5. Although the PS4 versions of these games are playable on the current-gen PlayStation console, these will be native ports for the PS5, which means they could potentially take advantage of the improved bells and whistles of the console.
