Do you need to say Uno instead of Check?

My opponent better hope they win before we get a Reverse and they’re stuck with my terrible play

Alt text description: Two people are playing chess along with a deck of Uno cards dictating play. Each turn a player draws a card. If the card has a number then that is the number of pieces they can move. Draw Two allows a player to return two captured pieces to the board. Skip causes a player to lose a turn. Reverse causes the players to turn the board around and switch to playing the other color. The actions for Wild or Wild Draw Four are not shown because the game ends in checkmate soon after a Reverse.

M6/M5 Pro Mac mini takes a step back on third-party storage upgrades

It’s not surprising because it’s Apple, but still a disappointing step backwards.

Also the base 256 GB storage only uses a single NAND module and doesn’t meet the “twice as fast” speed claims Apple made; those only come with upgraded storage that use multiple modules. It’s still faster than what came on the M4, but not by the claimed margin.

End of an era: NC DMV eliminates stickers, routine paper registration on Oct. 1

Beginning October 1st registration stickers on your license plate will no longer be required and the state will no longer provide a paper copy of your registration. You will be able to download/print a PDF of your registration, or you can get a paper copy from the state for a $5 fee, but they’re not really necessary now that all police cars have computers that can look up registration details. Eliminating the stickers and paper registrations will save the state $4.8 million each year. Drivers are of course still required to pay for the registration and property taxes annually, and must complete an emissions and safety inspection prior to renewing registration (although the state is working with the federal government to remove the emissions inspection requirement from all counties except Mecklenburg).

NC trooper charged with murder in Cumberland County deputy’s death

This is a wild story. TL;DR: it’s a love triangle. The woman was with the trooper initially but then she started living with the sheriff’s deputy instead. Recently (relatively) she left the deputy and returned to the trooper. Sounds like each man was jealous of the other. Deputy asked the woman to come over to talk, she initially agreed but changed her mind, and also stopped responding to him. He threatened to come over and cause a scene of she didn’t talk to him. When he showed up they argued in the yard and the trooper shot the deputy as the deputy advanced on them.

The N&O is not identifying the woman because she is allegedly a victim of domestic violence, but they also mention that she’s the sister of the current head of the State Highway Patrol, which seems pretty identifying for anyone who knows her.

The SBI is handling the investigation, although the State Highway Patrol is also conducting their own investigation. The North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys is handling the case at the request of the Cumberland County District Attorney and has appointed a former prosecutor from Wake and Durham counties as Special Prosecutor.

Lincoln Logs (1924 ad)

Crossposted from https://piefed.ca/c/[email protected]/p/936388/lincoln-logs-1924

Lincoln Logs were invented around 1916, and this ad was from 1924. The inventor was John Lloyd Wright, son of famous architect Frank Lloyd.

The sets were named after US president Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a one-room log cabin.

It may seem quaint in an age of realistic video games, but I like these creativity toys where the ingredients are a pile of physical parts + imagination.

North America's Only Venomous Mammal

Crossposted from https://lemmy.world/post/51130695

From Salthaven Wildlife Rehab

Meet North America's only venomous mammal, the Northern Short-tailed Shrew!

The Northern Short-tailed Shrew is a tiny but fierce predator, subduing its prey with neurotoxic saliva.

Don't worry, unless you are a small mammal, invertebrate, or a small amphibian, the short-tailed shrew's venomous saliva is not medically significant to humans.

Despite their tiny size, these little hunters have a huge appetite and need to eat up to half their body weight in food a day to keep up with their metabolism.

Not exactly the kind of animal you'd expect to be venomous!

To save you a wikipedia search:

The saliva of the northern short-tailed shrew contains a kallikrein-like protease, used to paralyze and subdue its prey. The toxin is strong enough to kill small animals, up to sizes somewhat larger than the shrew itself, and results in painful bites to humans who attempt to handle the shrew. The venomous saliva is secreted from submaxillary glands, through a duct which opens at the base of the lower incisors, where the saliva flows along the groove formed by the two incisors, and into the prey. The toxin is very similar in structure to the one produced by the Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum) which independently developed its toxin from the same precursor protein.

For you true shrew-ophiles, a relatively fun article on soricidin and blarina toxin, 2 poisons found so far in the shrew venom, a little on how they work, the people that discovered the compounds, and potential pharmaceutical benefits. With a read!

Shakespeare’s Words

Alt text: “My lord, is that legal?” meme template. The trade federation member is labeled as “Shakespeare’s editors reading his plays”; he asks: “My lord, is that a word?” In the next panel the image of Palpatine is replaced with an image of William Shakespeare. He replies, “I will make it a word.”

Windows 3.1 on a Modern AM5-Based PC is Surprisingly Usable

Crossposted from https://ibbit.at/post/217882

Although Windows 95 stole the show, Windows 3.0 was arguably the first version of Windows that more or less nailed the basic Windows UI concept, with the major 3.1 update being quite recognizable to a modern-day audience. Even better is that you can still install Win3.1 on a modern x86-compatible PC and get some massive improvements along the way, as [Omores] demonstrates in a recent video.

The only real gotcha here is that the AMD AM5 system with Asus Prime X670-P mainboard is one of those boards whose UEFI BIOS still has the ‘classic BIOS’ Compatibility Support Module (CSM) option. With that enabled, Win 3.1 installs without further fuss via a USB floppy drive from a stack of ‘backup’ floppies that someone made in the early 90s. [Omores] also tried it with CSMWrap, but with this USB to PS/2 emulation didn’t work.

Windows 3.1 supports ‘enhanced mode’ by default, which adds virtual memory and multi-tasking if you have an 80386 CPU or better. To fix crashing on boot and having to use ‘standard mode’ instead, the ahcifix.386 fix for the responsible SATA issue by [PluMGMK] should help, or a separate SATA expansion card.

For the video driver the vbesvga.drv by [PluMGMK] was used, to support all VESA BIOS Extensions modes. This driver has improved massively since we last covered it and works great with an RTX 5060 Ti GPU. There’s now even DCI support to enable direct GPU VRAM access for e.g. video playback, with audio also working great with only a few driver-related gotchas.

Crossposted from https://lemmy.ca/post/62238088

Air Traffic Control gave clearance to the fire truck to cross the runway while the Air Canada plane was landing. After realizing their mistake ATC tried to stop the truck but it was too late. Both pilots died and 41 people were transported to local hospitals including passengers, crew, and fire fighters.
