M6/M5 Pro Mac mini takes a step back on third-party storage upgrades

It’s not surprising because it’s Apple, but still a disappointing step backwards.

Also the base 256 GB storage only uses a single NAND module and doesn’t meet the “twice as fast” speed claims Apple made; those only come with upgraded storage that use multiple modules. It’s still faster than what came on the M4, but not by the claimed margin.

Apple solders the storage chip on the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini, making third-party storage upgrades impossible. This is a regression from the M4 Mac mini, which shipped with a removable storage module.

So, if you plan to buy a Mac mini, configure it with enough storage from the start, as future upgrades — even from third-party vendors — will not be possible.

Or go for a M4 Mac Mini instead.

This is going to make those models skyrocket in price now…

Weren’t they already? Some smaller AI companies were trying to buy as many as they could get their hands on

Oh yeah, the prices have been high but are about to go even higher because of this. I’ve been looking for an M1 as a bare minimum and those are insanely priced as well on the used market. Can barely find any for under $300 USD.

You’re going to wish that storage was upgradable when you realize AI is eating 40 GB of it (and macOS another 40 GB).

They probably said up to twice as fast. Those are the magic words.

Well that’s sad news.

Probably a slip up that the M4 era of desktop Mac’s had removable storage modules to begin with.

You reached the end
