Your brain was never designed for this much bad news

I should clarify that my experience is based on my interactions with people in the rural-ish Midwest.

I do try very hard to not make those assumptions when meeting someone new, as I know how it feels to be a progressive trapped in a dark red area of a (in my case) blue state.

Do what you need to do to survive. Hopefully one day this shit will get better and we can force the bigots and edge lords to keep that shit to themselves or be forced into social exile.

In my experience, there are very few people who actually "don't follow politics".

In most cases, once I have convinced a person that I truly won't judge them for their politics (I do, but I keep it to myself unless I think I can actually impact their way of thinking), they are usually happy to disclose their preferences and biases, which is usually plenty to determine their political leanings.

In all but a few cases, they "don't follow politics" because they have problematic or hypocritical politics and don't want to explain themselves.

A close-ish friend of the family is employed in data center design for in Social Media, and later Google. He is very progressive and aware of the issues that face lgbtq people in today's age. Yet, he is completely incapable of accepting that their high paying job is contributing to the degradation of the world at large.

Long story short, if people's livelihood is tied to fascism, they will make whatever excuses they need to to continue benefitting from that system.

3-year-old suffered sexual abuse during months in immigration custody, family alleges

I've reached a point where I'm hoping for an inverted qanon storm.

Every single person who even half heartedly supported or worked with this administration needs to be arrested, tried and jailed. This will not end until we make an example of them.

It's either that or we move on to the step after the ballot box. It's time for the oligarchs to decide if they are going to be eaten or if they are willing to give up their power and wealth.

Happy pride month!

They know.

Sure there are useful idiots in the general population, but those in power (overall) are fully aware that gay marriage is not a threat to "the traditional family".

They use it as a wedge issue. They use it because the bigots in this country respond to it. They use it because they see it as a tool for accruing power.

Fascists need an enemy, so what better groups to other than the ones that have been on the fringes of society since the dawn of man?

Don't let them convince you that they just don't understand. They do, and they will harm lgbtq people anyway because they are filth who will do anything they can to stay on top of the pile.

It's important to be aware of the fact that hypocrisy is a feature not a bug for the fascist.

The entire point is to make a system that prioritizes the rights of the in-group at the expense of the out-group. Selectively enforceable laws and norms are preferable. Vague laws and standards are prefered so they can be selectively enforced.

When the supreme court comes out with a non-sensical ruling, its not because they are stupid, it's because they are trying to build the hypocrisy and selective enforement into the foundation of the system.

Forget trying to make them see the hypocrisy, it's pointless. We know it's hypocritical, and they don't care.

Trump lawyers realize discovery in president's lawsuit could expose him to a Jan. 6 'trial'

Generally.

The supreme court isn't supposed to be able to make the president a completely unaccountable oligarch either, yet here we are.

Look, I really do hope you are right, that this goes somewhere and has some actual consequences. But we can't count on it. We HAVE to assume that he will wriggle out of this like he has so far in every other situation.

The supreme court is (for 6 of the 9 anyway) nothing but a bought and owned institution. What they should do or normally do is out the window.
