What book(s) are you currently reading or listening to? August 25

I just finished sky full of elephants, and I really didn't enjoy it. I thought the premise was so good, but everything about the execution left me cold. I didn't feel like the author wrote interesting characters to remember. I don't feel like the world building made any sense. I don't feel like the themes were deep at all, and the language/sex/drug content means that surely it's not for kids. A huge bummer.

Justice Department won't prosecute Garland for contempt, says refusal to provide audio wasn't crime

Reply in thread

President Biden had classified documents when he wasn't president. This is a no no. A special counsel was created to investigate and see if he broke the law (which requires showing a level of intent). The special counsel interviewed Biden and afterwards put out a report and was like "we shouldn't procecute this case, the jury would see him as a forgetful old grandpa" (this is not a real quote).

Now congressional Republicans want the justice department to release the audio of the interview. They say they want this to find evidence of criminal activity (as if the justice department wasn't doing the same thing?) And Merrick Garland is refusing under the reasoning that it wouldn't serve a purpose, and disclosing information on someone who hasn't committed a crime, you are going to prosecute, is bad. Imagine if the government did that to all people they didn't like, start an investigation, get a bunch of dirt, and then publish it?! It's insane to me IMHO. So then they decide to hold Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress which is the only escalation they have in this position.

I will admit I don't fully understand the meme, but I will say that these are pictures of an internet personality called finnster (sp?) who was a male presenting streamer who opened a place for people to donate money for him to do challenges, and one of them was for him to dress as a woman. His community donated that he was dressed as a woman for... Longer than a year I think? Anyway, he didn't change his voice at all and before this meme I had heard that he said he wasn't trans, and this was just how he dressed as a commitment to the bit. Being genderfluid might have changed the preferred pronouns of finnster, but I am unaware.
