The worst part was if I wore any of my many Flash or Green Lantern shirts people would assume it was a Big Bang reference. I had to explain, that no, I was just a nerd.

Fun fact, I was in talks with Rockstar to come help their internal IT team and they were especially excited because of my history in SecOps especially around data protection management. We discussed salary from the first call, letting them know my requirements. After like 4-5 rounds of interviews, they offered me the job, but the salary was so low, I was personally offended. I know laugh my ass off every time I see they had another leak. All because they weren't willing to pay a guy $30k more.

As an Air Force veteran this all is all hitting home so hard. I joined the Air Force right out of high school because my dad was in the Air Force and my grandfather was in the Army Air Corp, so of course I bought everything they were selling. We always made jokes about turning the Middle East into glass, or said little slogans like, “When it absolutely has to be destroyed overnight, call the Air Force.” I wish I could chalk that up to being young and dumb, but the leadership perpetuated these things and after 9/11 it really dehumanized what we were doing. I felt proud knowing that bombs I loaded on a plane were not there when it came back. I never once questioned why they attacked us in the first place. And I certainly didn’t learn about global politics with my high school education from Texas.

After I got out, and got educated, and started seeing the world through a larger lens, it shifted my point of view. I’ve gone from hardcore republican who voted for George W Bush, to voting for Bernie Sanders. I feel ashamed of how I used to think and act. I am very anti-war on all fronts. No one should ever have to lay down their life for some shithead politician.

With that said, I made the horrible decision to go to the Air Force subreddit to see what they were saying about these recent events. And it hurt me to see them all spouting the same shit I would have said 20 years ago. Crap about how the middle east has been fighting each other for 1,000 years, so we should just let them all kill themselves. And they strongly pushed the Aaron Bushnell was just some crazy radical anarchist. Or people saying his leadership failed him, or how did he have a security clearance, etc. There was not one single mention of how what was going on over there is beyond fucked up.

So, seeing other veterans stand up for this makes me feel a little better and gives me hope. I just hope that is makes it’s way down the ranks and into the young service members and recruits.

I moved from the second worst, Texas, to on of the top 5, Connecticut, last year. It has been the best decision of my entire life. It's so nice to have a Governor who advocates for more spending on education and public works. Versus wasting everyone's time fighting to put the 10 commandments in classrooms.

My kids went from learning about angels and Moses parting the Red Sea history class. Yes regular 3rd grade history, not some high school level theology elective. To this year being taught critical thinking skills and identifying and dealing with their emotions.

And don't even get me started on the differences in special education for my son with serve ASD and communication issues. In Texas he was just shoved in the back to prevent him from being a "burden". Now he loves going to school. I cried at his 8th grade graduation because before he could have never been in at a ceremony like that. Hearing the other kids cheer for him warmed my heart so much. He starts highschool in the fall, and is in a summer program run by the highschool to teach him life skills, like cooking, cleaning, working, all things we never thought possible for him.

Edit: I also went from having my representative in Congress being a carpetbagger nepo-baby, to a woman who grew up in public housing, became a teen mom, worked her way from community college all the way to a masters in education and was name Teacher of the Year 2016 for the entire United States

Imagine not showing up to your job for 6 months and people just going, "hmmm, I wonder where they are."

A lot of people dismiss Superman as being "too powerful" or "unrelatable." They’ll say Batman is more relatable because he doesn’t have superpowers. But seriously, how many of us can actually relate to being a billionaire playboy with unlimited resources? In contrast, Superman grew up in small-town, working-class America. He is as much Clark Kent as he is Superman.

People call him a "boy scout," as if that’s a flaw. But that misses the point. The fact that he has the power to rule the world and chooses not to, is what makes him extraordinary. He sets an ideal for people to strive for.

Yes, in the hands of a bad writer he can become a walking deus ex machina. But in the hands of a good writer, Superman becomes the core of some of the most powerful and iconic stories in comics. His greatness doesn’t come from what he can do, it comes from the choices he makes.

It wasn't an immediate turn heel, and leave moment, but my wife and I had talked about moving out of Texas for a while. Mainly driven by our son with special needs. We had been paying tens of thousands dollars a year for therapy and constantly fighting with his school to get the services he needed. Then last year things went downhill fast. We ended up pulling him out of school because one of the teachers told us they found him in the parking lot laying under a car. Not surprised he would do that, he is opposed with cars and especially exhaust systems, but he was supposed to have a paraprofessional with him all day, so we really wondered how he got away like. Unfortunately, he has communication problems, so he couldn't tell us. We had already been in talks with a lawyer about bringing a lawsuit to challenge the services they were offering. But his IEP already said he was supposed to have a para with him. When the lawyer told us it would cost $10-15k just to bring a lawsuit to force them to do what they are already legally required to do, we decided that was it. We were leaving Texas.

We ended up in Connecticut and it was the best decision we ever made. There are so many services here for him. He is truly thriving. My wife and I don't immediately tense up when we see the school calling. I broke into tears during my first meeting with them because it was all about what they could do for him. Versus every meeting ever in Texas where they made us feel like he was a burden on the school.

Sadly, it has been going on for pretty much as long as punk has been around, and it doesn't really have a single contributing factor.

In the US 80s hardcore was made up mainly of white angry teens and young adults. Most weren't racist but some were. And the low entry of musicianship needed to get into punk made it easy to start a band, so some Nazi bands started forming. The fans of these band thought they would be welcome at other punk shows, but were wrong. That's why the Dead Kennedy's wrote the song "Nazi Punk Fuck Off".

In England skinheads have been around since the 60s but where not the racist skinheads you think of today. It was more of a working class subculture. Oi punk evolved from this subculture, so as fascist started adopting skinhead culture the music came with it. It also doesn't help that some early punks would wear Nazi symbols to be provocative, even if they didn't believe in the ideology.

Even in the 90s, when I was a teen and active in the local punk community Nazi's would show up to a show every now and then. It always ended up with them getting drug outside and getting the shit kicked out of them. Even if they weren't at the show if there was a sighting of Nazi's nearby people would go running to kick the shit out of them. Yet, every few months it's like they expected something else to happen when and would show up again.

My only thought on why this shit is still happening 30-40 years later, is that you have to be a fucking moron to be a Nazi, so it's not like they would have the best judgement when it comes to where they are welcome.

The US would be in a much better place if more people stuck to their guns like her.

• The shear amount of history that is just everywhere (I remember eat lunch at a park and reading a sign about how it was the site of a huge battle during the war of the roses)
