Probably a good decision in the long run, their rational makes sense. Ubuntu's stubborn insistence on snap is poor decision making on their part.

What happened to these children was horrific, but framing it as a communism vs democracy/capitalism is pointless jingoism. The USA and other Western nations have their fair share of atrocities committed against children.

The thousands of children who were stolen from their families and abused/killed in Residential Schools were mistreated and abused in a society that viewed the practice as "democratic", "enlightened" even.

The idea of deformities making children "unfit" is just a form of eugenics, which was fully endorsed by the US prior to WWII.

To say nothing of Japanese internment camps, indiscriminate bombing of schools and homes in the Middle East, thousands of teens tried and imprisoned as adults in the failed war on drugs, children being stolen from their families and imprisoned on the Southern border, and countless other atrocities committed against children by our great nation. And right now the Western world is financing a military campaign in Gaza which has killed an unfathomable number of children.

Communism may be no better, but it's hard to argue it's worse.

Remote desktop support is buggy on gnome and nearly non-existant on other DE's, which speaks to how poor a job wayland does at managing functions between DE's, where each individual DE has to build their own solution for basic functions, further fragmenting development efforts.

Then there's accessibility functions, which wayland breaks almost by design by denying apps access to each other. Even something as simple as an on screen keyboard becomes nearly impossible to implement.

Any software thats being pushed to users as the "main" experience, should not break things as common and fundemental as remote desktop or onscreen keyboards. Great way to drive away potential users switching from windows 10.

As a parent to a 5 and a 2 yo, once kids can communicate they can often be reasoned with. Most things that I ask them as a parent are things they dont want to do, like brush their teeth or don't throw their toys or share with their sister. As a parent it's my job to make them understand WHY those things are important and worth doing.

Brush your teeth so they dont decay and need to be cut out.

Dont throw toys because they will break and get thrown away or be taken away for everyones safety.

Share with your sister because if you cant cooperate with people they wont cooperate with you when you want them to.

Breaking down the reasons to language a kid can understand is generally successful and certainly much better than trying to force your kids to comply with expectations based on nothing more than "because I said so", which was a common refrain said to me and my siblings growing up.

Perhaps you haven't been reading the news, but Trumps "One Bill Beautiful Bill" abuptly ended tax credits for home solar a few weeks ago, between that and his existing tariffs on solar panels, the breakeven period for a home solar setup is now decades.

The residential solar industry is in freefall right now. Thousands of installers are losing or have already lost their jobs.

I guess I take it for granted that this is common knowledge since I work in the industry, but it's unbelievably bad right now.

I got back into scifi books recently as an adult and was disgusted to find that virtually all of the "great" scifi authors are menwritingwomen trope goldmines.

When there are female main characters that aren't just the authors fetishs, they're typically subjected to violence, with rape used so frequently as female "character development" that it would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

I've begun to prefer scifi written by women, because then at least I know its not going to be completely cringe.

Transwomen who've been through both puberties are going to be pretty close to the physical abilities of the average ciswomen after a few years on estrogen, though there are some permanent effects of testosterone that will remain, like build size.

Thats to say nothing of the fact that dividing sports along gender is somewhat arbitrary to begin with, while the average female athlete may be smaller and weaker than the average male athlete, there is still plenty of overlap, and it would really make more sense to divide sports along different criteria, like weight classes or some other more fair metric.

That's not how it played out in Buffalo NY in their last mayoral election. A socialist won the primary and the Democratic party launched a massive write-in campaign to keep their preferred liberal "Byron Brown" in power, to the point they were handing out stamps at voting locations so that they could be used to easily "write" him. They succeeded in keeping the socialist candidate out, and despite winning, their liberal candidate ended up resigning mid-term to take a cushy C-suite job instead.

For context, the headline leaves out that this contract proposal still needs to be ratified by members, who are mostly not happy with the companies minimal concessions.

If it's any consolation, there are hundreds of these towerhouses/castles scattered throughout Ireland, some are like this one, some are little more than a pile of rocks, but a fair number are restored to some degree.

Craggaunowen Castle and Knappogue Castle are restored and used regularly for re-enactments, both are a stones throw from this ruin.

Home assistant has a built in voice assistant function that can be as simple or robust as you need it to be. The whole thing can be setup fully locally and mine runs easily on an old micro-pc I got for $100. I had it running on a Pi3b originally but the STT and TTS would take 10+ seconds to process, which was too long.

Out of the box it controls local devices, does to-do lists, controls media, sets timers. Setting reminders doesn't work out of the box, but can be setup with some great community templates. Services that require web content like "tell me the news" or "what's the weather in Seattle" need to be either setup with custom commands that have access to the info you want, or need to go through an LLM.

Luckily, the past few months have seen the open home foundation add integrations for LLM's, both local and web-based (chatgpt, gemini, etc) are possible, so you can have it run queries through models run on a local GPU. Though this is currently fairly bleeding edge and I haven't tried running a local LLM myself yet so I can't speak to it's complexity.

Most non-battery powered reolink cameras have an https web server interface, as well as support for any 3rd party app through open onvif and rtsp protocols.

The bad part is, you typically need to turn those functions on with their app...

Fortunately they don't require a an account or login to do that!

I have several of their "E1 outdoor" ptz models, highly recommend the "cx" model with the starlight sensor for amazing night vision, although it looks to be backordered at the moment.

Edit: missed the bit about birds, you'd probably want one of their simple fixed outdoor cams like the RLC-510A or WA depending on whether you prefer wifi or Ethernet.

There are a number of niche brands out there that still cater to us old farts. Check out Ulefone, Oukitel, Unihertz, Doogee, iiif150, etc. Each company has normal models, but they all also dabble in unusual experimental models as well, some that are ultra small, other that have blackberry style keypads, or feature projectors, floodlights, uhf radios, thermal cameras, multiple screens, etc etc.

Most models still retain SD card slots, headphone jacks, some still have IR emitters and other older i/o as well.

They're all Chinese companies though, funny how all the consumer tech innovation is happening in communist countries.
